- Bob Stoops and Matt Leinart recall when Oklahoma made a late push ahead of the 2000 national championship game to get the future Heisman winner in a Sooners’ uniform.
Matt Leinart is about as USC as they come, but he strongly considered Oklahoma as a recruit. On this episode of Conversations with Coach, they discuss Stoops’ visiting Leinart’s family home, his mom’s cookies and how a dinner at Applebee’s ultimately helped Leinart to make his decision to pick Los Angeles, California over Norman, Oklahoma.

I'm not even from oklahoma or a sooners fan but Bob Stoops has gotta be right there with bobby bowden with my favorite coaches of all time.
Towards the end of bowden's coaching, watching him being interviewed about his players he could only remember them by numbers!! NO COMPARISON!!
@@joecharles5368 wasn't comparing them, someone can like more than one coach dude lol
Coach Stoops is really good at this.
Wat a great interview! I could listen to Bob Stoops talk all day. That guy is a mans man. And a football guy. There is nothing fake about Bob. Matt did great as well. Very enjoyable to watch.
Bob does a great job with Conversations with Coach.
Good on for Coach making a friend in the TV biz. Having said that, I lived in San Diego and watched the whole Reggie Bush story unfold. Some pretty questionable "promoters" rented a house for his parents, there were allegations that money passed under the table all for the right to represent Bush in his pro career.
That was 20 years ago; the rules have changed with NIL and that's all good for the players today. But Bush, with USC taking a blind eye to the arrangement, broke every rule in the book about retaining an amateur status and not dealing with money men.
Pete Carroll knew the university was in hot water; just before the sanctions and taking Bush's Heisman back occurred, Carroll slipped out the back door to take the Seahawks job. A big explosion happened to the football program and no one was there to take responsibility for it except Mike Garrett, the USC Athletic Director.
From ESPN:
USC was hit with a two-year bowl ban, four years' probation, loss of scholarships and forfeits of an entire year's games for improper benefits to Bush.
The NCAA found that Bush, identified as a "former football student-athlete," was ineligible beginning at least by December 2004, dating to the Trojans' 2004 national championship.
USC was penalized for a lack of institutional control in the ruling by the NCAA following its four-year investigation. The report cited numerous improper benefits for Bush and former basketball player O.J. Mayo, who spent just one year with the Trojans.
The Trojans barely avoided further punishment that would have removed one of the sport's most popular teams from television. The committee discussed a TV ban, but decided the penalties handed down "adequately respond to the nature of violations and the level of institutional responsibility."
The Trojans have been under suspicion for years. The NCAA, the Pac-10 and even the FBI conducted investigations into the Bush family's business relationships and USC's responsibility for the culture around its marquee football team.
End ESPN
It was not a pretty sight; USC forfeited all their games and their national championship was vacated.
Bob Stoops is being generous in his praise to a fault. He coached some equally good, if not better players at Oklahoma that went on to even greater achievement. Stoops and OU should be commended for doing it the right way: within the rules and the spirit of amateur sports.
Stoops is a podcast natural!
These are some cool stories that I didn’t know about.
I was a student at OU from 2003-2007 so a lot of this happened back in my time.
He definitely has the knowledge and the voice for this
What fantastic interview like no other with deep connections personally AND professional prowess. You both are real people! Thank you for the positive, impactful contribution to life!
Great discussions between 2 greats🏈🏈
Bob Stoops a very classy man and a great Coach.I like the other famous Stoops too:
Mark and Mike….All real guys …no bs and not fake.
Great job coach,loved it !!!!
Thanks for creating and sharing.
What a great conversation.
Reggie Bush 100% deserves his Heisman. He was an absolutely transcendent player.
Sooner fan here, and yeah, it's ridiculous that he doesn't have that back yet, especially since the NIL exists now.
@@Aquariun9iteMMare Him and Peterson definitely form the RB duo for the 2000s All Decade team. That era of college football was fantastic.
@@Aquariun9iteMMareDidn't exist then and against the rules at the time so no he does not deserve it back.
Maybe, BUT Reggie, and his family knew what they were doing was wrong.
really enjoyed this exchange. Well done.
Id like to meet Matt some day. Seems like a down to earth guy.
So cool! Much respect Matt! BOOMER SOONER!
I love these
Wow! Bob stoops is a great guy. I had no idea.
You had no idea Stoops is a great guy lok
Nice interview
I love you coach stoops. ✌️. C
Josh Hypeul interview please💚✌
Matt seems like a really cool guy
The NCAA is a joke. Reggie was one of the greatest college football players ever! Boomer Sooner!
Matt is a good dude. Boomer!
Interesting that Matt did not like leaving home to be in Norman, which also haunted Jordy Bahl.
Matt ✌️❤️🏈⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My brother-in-law makes fun of me for liking Matt Leinart. He does a good job
I don't like USC, but I've always been a Leinart fan. Great college QB, cool as a cucumber, and a great personality.
Matt Leinart, you're so likable. You could become a mega rich politician.
Naw, politics will ruin a person. He's fine at what he's doing.
I rather have Jason White
Ya know im kinda glad he didn't come here cuz I still don't think he would have started over Jason White but I love hearing these old stories.
Yes sir! Jason was the better QB to lead the team hands down
Jason CHOKED in that game against USC and Matt was surgical. That said, he was a good QB for us overall.
@@OUrNit03 the entire team played like shit in that game. Lol
Starting from the kickoff muff. It was not our night. Everything went wrong from the jump.
I have more respect for Leinart after that interview. Still don't like his snide remarks directed at OU though. But, it is college football, and that's one of the reasons why we love the sport.
Reggie should definitely get his Heisman back.
Reggie for Heisman!
Joe Washington was the most electric
Of course Michigan was Matt's second; we are always the second choice for these guys. I know Peyton Manning looked hard at Michigan, Brady Quinn is another that comes to mind (though to be honest I'm glad we ended up with Chad Henne). But damn, that would've been awesome.
Before Reggie Bush was Joe Washington
Lol Bob Stoops has no idea that Matt’s current wife is not the mother of his son Cole…kudos to Matt for just ignoring Bob on that.
Don't be too hard on him for not knowing that. Maybe Matt doesn't talk about it very much so he didn't know?
Coach, can you ask him why he had to go so hard on us in 2004?
Its documented, OU players went out and partied too much the night before and were hungover with some puking. USC players said that OU was the better team but they just didn't want it.
I use to live in Oklahoma. I don’t blame Matt for not wanting to live in Norman over S. California. Easy choice!🤣
Really enjoying these.
Glad to hear!
Does Matt have a speech impediment? Not trying to joke one bit. If he does I never knew, and if he doesn't, I am a little worried for him.
I made it to 6 mins, mostly because of Stoops.. Anymore and my ears would have started bleeding. He real dum.
His explanation of why Bush is/was great can be said about literally every memorable player.
That dude hates OU!!! Why is Coach Stoops interviewing him????
Reggie Bush was more electric but Adrian Peterson was by far a more effective runner. I would never trade Peterson for Bush.
But I agree Bush deserved his Heisman then and deserves it back now. He's been punished enough and with NIL it's all now pointless. NCAAF as an organization has major issues.
Come on coach reggie Bush deserves his Heisman back?
You got rid of one of our best quarterback prospects in Rhett Bomar for doing less than Reggie did.
What's up wit all these SC ppl
Adrian Peterson should have won
Matt was a great college player…
Jason White was better
One last thing: no way in hell Reggie Bush was a better college player than Barry Sanders!
Not even close
Matt played his best in big games when the stakes were at it's highest. White didn't, which was so frustrating.
He did say top 5 but agreed with Barry
Reggie Bush was electric but Barry Sanders was nuclear
Come on Stoops why didn't you try harder to get him lol
