Guitar Tone Tuesday: Ep 167 - Yamaha FS-TA TransAcoustic; Gimmick or Great??

  • The Yamaha TransAcoustic is a guitar range that includes an actuator on the back of the instrument that picks up vibrations and amplifies them with fx.
    The fx include built in chorus and 2 types of reverb. Due to the actuator, the guitar does not need to be plugged in to hear the fx, and this is its most innovative feature.
    With the exception of the fx controls and a SRT piezo pickup for plugging in, the FSTA is Yamaha's standard take on the OM. The guitar includes a solid sitka spruce top, laminated mahogany or nato back and sides, a mahogany or nato neck and a rosewood fretboard with a 25 inch scale-length.
    Is this guitar a gimmick, or truely something special?

    I've had my FSC TA for 6 months now, play daily absolutely love it, a little advice don't use rechargeable batteries, when the battery starts to get low power the effects turn into bad distortion & sounds horrible but with normal batteries no issues I really dig this acoustic she is mesmerizing ❤🎸❤️

    It’s a cool thing to be sure. Yamaha is by far the largest musical instrument manufacturer and has provided me with many solid deals when learning a new one. I’ve had guitars, trumpets and keys from them over the years. Never disappointed. I’m a bit wary of built in electronics though. Always seem less than robust on acoustics in the budget range. Cool jams as expected!

      @LucasHaneman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. I love Yamaha, and have had many things made by them over my life. Still use 2 Yamaha JX amps to teach with, and they are tanks. I agree with you 100% about acoustics with built in electronics, especially low end. That's part of why I can't jell with a guitar like this. I like a couple of pickups like K&Ks', and some sound whole varieties etc, but most acoustic pickups are junk. haha I also like more controll over my fx, but I'm not every player, and I know how useful a guitar like this can be for so many people too.

    Gimmick or Great? What about a great gimmick? I mean in a very musical way, this instrument provides so many options and value for the player you listed: home-player, entertaining a small group, busker. I still don't understand the technological physics, but can appreciate what it offers to those who seek such an instrument. You've done well to unmask what this instrument does as I was quite curious when seeing theseonline.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Guy! I really appreciate your kind kind words as usual, and agree, this guitar is a great thing for so so many players. I don't really get it either, except understanding that the actuator picks up vibrations in some way and some how amplifies them. I know the batteries are being used when the fx are turned on, weather the guitar is plugged in or not. The actuator didn't feel like a typical speaker when I checked out the inside of the guitar though. It felt almost honeycomb-like in it's shape in some ways. :) Strange, but cool!

    Liked the presentation very much Lucas. Thanks for your great playing again. I'm thinking about to buy one Dread or OM for the couch and for holidays, where I need something convenient and small packed with a few variations in tone.
    Only worries are about the sound quality dry played, and if this is satisfying enough in comparison to my Eastmans. Will see.. Cheers. :)

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These are definitely nice guitars, but I have to ask a question what are your Eastmans? This will help me determine whether you will be satisfied or not most likely with the sound quality of this guitar

    • @tontrenner
      @tontrenner 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LucasHanemanHey, yes of course, these are the E1D, E2D, E1OM. In my opinion, they are hard to beat. I would probably have to go up to the L-series. But I have a good offer for the FG TA in barely used condition. And I remember that I always liked the sound of the FG700 and FG800 models.

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tontrenner very cool! I’m sure you would like it. I would just go into it not necessarily expecting the same level of depth that you have from your Eastmans with the fact that the Yamaha is a laminated back and sides as far as I know, and with the extra technology inside the guitar I think this makes for a little bit less in the low end response of the instrument as well. That said it sounds very nice acoustically for what it is and the added features that it has make it a very fun enjoyable guitar to play. Very comfortable as well. I’ve always loved the way Yamaha‘s play!

    • @tontrenner
      @tontrenner 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LucasHanemanYeah must say I'm looking forward to it. And the laminated back and sides are maybe a plus on holidays and transports in different humidity and temperatures. I guess the dread is a good compromise, less low end than an all-solid, but more low end, than an OM. Will see. :) Have a nice evening...

    Another excelent vid! Question, any reason you didn't mic in stereo? just to see how much you really get surrounded by effects in both ears and proxcimity to the soundhole. Also, all the Trans-Acoustics have an out to atached to a PA but not all have an aditional pickup, Right? is that line out stereo? and does it accept a quarter inch (large) TRS Jak cable to go to another amp/mixer/DI/PA?
    Thank you, and sorry for the mamouth post...

    • @MelissaCox1992
      @MelissaCox1992 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry again, what about overall preset accessibility and setup plus other features like dialing in the FX peramitors? I always hate that when ever I get a new piece of kit I spend the first month with someone going over everything and memorising the buttons and how many times I have to press to get a certain menu. I can't even buy the Latest Yamaha CVP 909 to replace the 509 I have now because the entire thing is touch screen and I would have to get assistance setting up anything including even changing instruments. Why has noone thought about this before?
      Ps: Is there another way I can contact you so my ramblings aren't polluting youtubes comments?

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi again, Melissa. The reason why I didn’t mic stereo for this video, and why I don’t from most videos on the channel is because I don’t have an adequate small interface that connects to my iPhone with that capability. I have The I rig mono, which just allows me to use one overhead microphone or in the case of some acoustic videos, one microphone in the room in front of me to pick up my guitar and my voice. Maybe someday I’ll get The I rig duo though which would allow me to do that. For now I’m just trying to keep things as simple as possible as I’m making these videos as a fun thing I do in my spare time when I’m not gigging, recording, or teaching guitar. :-)
      For those reasons it’s a super low budget and simple show. HAHA.
      I have made some exceptions and shot multi part videos or recorded one episode of the show in stereo that was about my Peggy White premiere (the Guitar in that Gordon Lightfoot video you checked out) if you wish to check that one out it’s called “indulge me for a moment while I tell you about a perfect acoustic “. It really is an exceptional instrument and I took the time to record the guitar clips for that video in true stereo.
      You know, I’m not sure about this Yamaha guitar being stereo or mono. I think I recall hearing that it was just mono but certainly something to look into. The effects would sound amazing in stereo. When you’re in the room with it, you really do get that true stereo experience as your hearing The instrument itself as well as the amplified sound. It’s very cool! Thanks again for checking out the video. I really appreciate all your kind words! :-)

    I'm not 3/4 thru video yet but I'm wondering how it might compare to the the gizmos you can attach to an acoustic to get reverb. Tonewood something maybe it's called?

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment, and for checking out the video! I can't say for sure, but I think it sounds a little better, based on my memory of the thing you're talking about.

    • @whitehh15
      @whitehh15 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tonewood offers more effects, but sounds worse. The advantage goes to tonewood for being able to attach to any guitar, but the trade off is that it won't sound quite as good as the Yamaha reverb/chorus
