Bill's one of the greatest voices EVER! And he didn't even make his first album until he was 33! His story is incredible! RIP to a legend! It's amazing all the great one's Johnny had on The Tonight Show!
Bill Withers was married to beautiful Denise Nicholas an actrees. Withers flew to a town where Nicholas was working on a movie, went to the hotel, and beat the crap out of her. She filed for divorce, they had been married a year. You know one is committed to wife beating when he drove to the airport, flew in the plane, drove to her hotel room, and not at any time he thought that was a bad idea. His second marriage didn't last very long either. Nice voice piece of sh*t of a man.
Bill Withers had no ambition to be an "entertainer." He wasn't going to dance or tell jokes, so you had to like him on his own terms. And millions of us certainly did.
One of the most memorable pop songs of the 20th century. I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know! It’s so simple and so sincere.
I can only describe his voice as pure and powerful. Thanks for posting. On a side note, I could never understand why so many hosts of that era made such a big deal of promoting a guest’s album. Just hold up the cover and give the name of the album. I think they all had some meaningless moral code about hawking a product. Meanwhile, their entire salary was based on selling ads. Anyway, another great one from the JC archives.
There was NO ONE quite like Bill Withers. He was the full package, voice, style, writer, and he was rather entertaining with Johnny on this clip. When Bill Withers was on the radio, we all listened, every time, to the very last note.
Right? This was about when his original label Sussex went under, and he went to Columbia Records. He unquestionably made his best records and wrote better for Sussex because no one was trying to tell him how to do what he did so well naturally. I never thought I'd live to see a live version of anything off of '+Justments. I never thought it existed. A stellar performance af Same Love That Made Me Laugh. Sadly, Bill's marriage to Denise Nicholas ended shortly after this. A tough time for him. IMO, Johnny and hardly anyone knew what talent Bill had. A deserved future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. I love that Bill never tried for 1 minute to be someone he wasn't.
@@Noiramclerck that's a good chunk of info about Bill I didn't know. I love his simplicity and yet somehow, unpretentiously sophisticated style. Good lyrics, good groove, good melody! I don't even own a record player and I was eyeing the '+Justments vinyl! Same love that made me laugh, You, Green Grass, Ruby Lee...There's a video of him playing "You" live! Freaked out when I saw it for the first time. That drum and bass groove...✨
@kristi94 IMO, and many don't know about '+Justments because Sussex was out of business and couldn't promote the record, He had more songs that could've hit and didn't. The record was out of print for decades, further obscuring it, and Bill. I latched onto him, beginning in ~`86, and tried to find stuff on him. Even when the Internet came into wide use, I had little success finding out about the guy who made this amazing, humble, heartfelt, groovy music. The revelation to all started in about 2005 or so with the release of a DVD called 'Still Bill', which led to many interviews, and unveiling of how respected he was by many musicians of renown, and increasingly, of fans. His refusal to reactivate his career, though willingness to task about it while sharing wisdom, probably helped him in some ways. Simply my favorite artist in a lifetime of wide music love. Ain't No Sunshine is my favorite song, and Live at Carnegie Hall, my favorite album. It's good to talk with a fellow afficionado!
BTW, I heard that version of 'You' on the Geraldo show. An excellent performance, though really rough sound quality. The rhythm section is really neutered, and his singing is tinny. I think it's due to poor microphone setup and video preservation and age. The music and performance are so good, though. He leaves off some lines from the record at the end. My favorite : "If you're throwing dirt on people, you're gonna get some dirt on you."
@@Noiramclerck this one!!! God I love the ending lines of that song!!!! Seems like they skipped some. Don't know if it had to do with the way they rehearsed it
Algunas de sus canciones más reconocidas fueron "Lean on Me", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Use Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Lovely Day" y "Grandma's Hands".

I don't think I've ever seen a host b more indifferent towards their guest first you point out he was a skilled tradesman that made toilets not shady at all you miss label one of his greatest songs as Grandma's house and it's actually Grandma's hands which is a beautiful record. And just all around s***** introduction
I thought it was 100% respectful. They both teased each other during the interview. The commode reference was for laughs. but, things were lighter back then, the audiences of today have a dour outlook on every little thing.
Such a talented man! Bluesy, soulful, gritty, singing from the heart. Bill Withers is missed!

One of the greatest voices of the 70's. Mss him a lot.
What a pleasant surprise to find a Bill Withers segment today. Amazing singer and self-made man. I'd love to see more like this in the future.
The 60s and 70s were an amazing era for music. We haven't seen anything like it since.
Y nunca lo veremos denuevo si la musica sigue involucionando 😅😢
Music nowadays is catchy but no soul or depth.
@@J35Y1 That's what happens when corporations control music.
@@J.B24its the same with movies and tv. Have you seen the current tonight shows? Its just political news.. its awful compared to johnny carson

The second song might just be the smoothest thing i’ve ever seen
So humble..he never changed ✌🏾
Another flawless performance. Thank god for him. Rip
Absolutely love his music. So talented. I feel a bit old, but this is REAL MUSIC ❤😢.
Thank God for the internet, youtube etc. We can still see legends perform.
Thank you, this is absolutely incredible.
I can still remember this song from the summer of 71 …if I remember correctly
I love his voice❤ Grandma's hands still can bring a tear.
It does me the same..what a great song so relatable I hear that song I see my grandma ❤
Bill is so Smooth, when He talks, it's like a Song !!!!
Lovely Day so relaxing to listen to.
Bill was a modest man with incredible vocals.....and an oustandjng cache of hit 🎵 songs 🙌🏾
For a guy who used to have a bad stutter,Bill has done well!
Truly unique one talented contented man.
Voice of an angel....
I love this song!
Like Charlie Pride( may he rest in peace) Bill has a beautiful and Unique voice.

I don't mind jokes
One of my all time favorite songs! So smooth!
What a lovely day.
Always a treat to hear Bill Withers sing

This must’ve been a great show with Sir Bill Withers on here. Back when artists could sing as good on stage as in the studio.
Voice of the 70's to me. ❤
Absolutely priceless! Thank you so much.
One of the very best & a great human being as well.
The current music industry wouldn’t give Bill Withers the time of day because he was a grown man with actual talent
Man he was so good
One of the greatest
I Love you Bill with all my heart
Bill Withers is right up there with Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and Stevie.
