It failed because it's ridiculous. Ever drive a Mercury from this era? These things were big wallowing land yachts. They didn't handle, they didn't stop, and it took a 429 for mediocre performance. Really very silly cars at this point. The market was wising up as European and Japanese cars made it obvious that they were just dated 50's technology in an enormous foolish package... even with the fender skirts!

1971 was the year horsepower began to decline. The 1970 Chevelle 454 ci rated at 450 hp is the prime example.
