    Loads of "TIME" spent in the field.... I'm out with my goshawk nearly everyday so he knows we (dogs, ferrets and me) will try our hardest to produce for him; helping form a good partnership, giving him excellent hunting opportunities & exercise which increases fitness, this allows good rewards, so you can increase the hunting weight, which gives strength, endurance, confidence & good conditioning.
    The most important factor is TIME!

    First of all, I must congratulate you on a very well done video. One of the best I have seen. I loved the shots of the literature in the library, (many of the same books are in mine as well) The hunting footage was well rounded and filmed professionally. Your Gos, Harris and Peregrine do well in the field. We here in America enjoy the same passion of falconry being akin to the same brotherhood. Once again, well done!

  • @hawkinsfalconry
    @hawkinsfalconry  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are a number of reasons for hoods, they relax a bird before hunting and also act exactly as horse blinkers, preventing it seeing anything which could startle it. Some falconers hunt out of the hood so when the hood is removed the raptor knows the falconer has put them in the best position to catch a meal.
    This gives a strong, reliable hunting partnership where teamwork comes together to put food on the table.

  • @hawkinsfalconry
    @hawkinsfalconry  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoy flying all of my birds. Soaring a Harris' hawk in the hills is awesome, so is a crow ringing flight or woodcock, pheasant or duck stoop with a peregrine, but personally I like hunting a goshawk in woodland.

      Hawkins Falconry I was only joking about the blood and the animal being picked apart alive. There's nothing wrong with falconry. How do you get North American birds in the U.K.? Do you breed them in the U.K. or import them from North America? Goshawks and peregrine falcons can be found pretty much anywhere in the world but Harris hawks and red tailed hawks are found in North America where I live.

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was filmed over a few years. Our videos contain footage of birds of prey hunting, which is what they do in their natural environment. I don't take pleasure in killing at all, but I do want to see our hawks behaving naturally, just like their wild cousins. Everything caught is dispatched humanely, shown the upmost respect and eaten by myself, hawks, dogs and ferrets... Nothing is wasted

    (This depends on which branch of longwing falconry you are practising. Some falconers actively pursue pigeons, whilst in other branches of falconry they are a negative distraction)
    If they do chase and fail to catch the pigeon they will actively try to find me from quite a distance, this is where I would reward them with a flush from a point leading to a good feed of warm meat - which enforces that positive hunting bond.
    If they succeed in catching the pigeon....telemetry.

    Wow, absolutely BEAUTIFUL video! I'm a bird watcher and love photographing them. And hawk's, falcon's, and eagle's, are my all around favorite bird's. I'm wondering if you could tell me how much weight can a hawk the size of your's lift, and the biggest prey it can kill?? I'm also wondering how old your bird's are and if they'll get any bigger then they already are?? Sorry so many questions I'm just so fascinated with them!

      I'm thinking to either get a Harris hawk or a goshawk. Which one would be better? My mom is saying to get a Harris hawk because they are nicer and our sponsor already breeded them and the goshawk is too expensive because he didn't breed any of them yet. I'm very talkative 😁 sorry about that. But which type of hawk would be best?

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nancy Ray There isn’t a best bird? Your bird choice should be influenced by what quarry you have available, the time, dedication, experience and commitment is the same with all species. They should all be flown most days. Just depends on what you want to catch and the style in which you want to see it.

    i might be wrong but should the hawks be allowed to eat their prey? i was told the handlers usually take the prey away in order to prevent them from filling up and then refusing to hunt again? (the act of which always struck me as rather difficult considering the long distances the hawks sometimes travel....how would the handlers manage to get there in time to take the prey away before the hawks eat them?)

    • @Luxfer999
      @Luxfer999 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on wether you intend to hunt more or if it is the last one for the day. Anyway you always give some reward be it a full gorge if you wish to leave a good impression or just the amount for the day in order to keep weight but not loose interest. They are like athletes, balanced diet, little fat and lots of muscle and endurance.

    • @hawkinsfalconry

      Ethan Skerry Ferrets are always kept in view of the birds aviary and introduced very early in training. I always hunt with light coloured ferrets so the birds don’t confuse them for rabbits.

      Robert Dorman Hi Robert, My full time job is a fireman (20yrs), I work with my birds as a second job so I can afford to practise my passion and be in the field as much as possible.
      I only have a maximum of three birds so this gives them sufficient daily exercise.
      I hunt with them and eat what we catch. Dogs, hawks and ferrets all share, nothing is ever wasted.
      I was in the infantry from the age of 16 (Guards Depot in London).
      This taught me determination, hard work, manners, etiquette and respect.
