I'm sitting here thinking how to finance all the tools that I need but haven't got yet (I'm moving on from PMC to using actual silver and hopefully gold but training is pretty much reserved for the very young and art students who want a career in gold/silver smithing) well where there's a will there's a way and I have just found your channel and a couple more who show how to set stones that are unsuitable for Silver Clay firing and now you are telling me how to recycle old tools...my workshop (which I am building as part of a cabin on family land in Scotland, won't be empty after all...I mean I have all the tools for wirework, PMC, bench and bench pegs and blocks multiple pliers etc etc but you have just given me a whole new way of acquiring tools!) thanks again x
Been engraving a little over a year now, pneumatic only. Using templates for gravers. Almost all my gravers have a heel. In hand pushing, do you need a heel? I’m mainly carving coins, hobo nickels, in the small detailed areas I found out I don’t need the power of pneumatic, so I’m using more light hand pushing. I like it, but haven’t had much practice in hand pushing. I spent almost a year making my handpiece, gravers out of concrete nails, making my own tools, etc. A lot of trial and error.
JRyder Engraving shaping a heel into it isn’t essential for using the tool for setting ie lifting grain, but for engraving it certainly helps guide the line
Yes it could if the files are good quality however I would stick with making square and lozenge ie wider gravers, as narrow gravers made from file steel may break when forcing beads up. The handles are good for making claw pushers and shapers too.
Hi there, your videos are so helpful. Could you just tell me if a cheap needle file will do or should it be s high quality like an old Vellorbe etc ( I only have cheaper ones)

slik mixx the lozenge graver as seen is a great grain lifter. I also use a round graver but I like to shape the tip so the grain tail isn’t so tatty
Could this be used to make different gravers like onglette and bulino gravers? Nice video tho for sure 👍👍 I got loads of files to grind now 👍

No, cheap needle files are usually brittle and won't cope with the task
