I found this segment on how much one should pressure the chisel to excellent advice. Not only for making chisels, but also because it makes for an excellent metaphor. If one applies too much force or effort into a single task or even a whole aspect of their lives, they will find themselves struggling to be the best they can be, because they are losing balance and harmony, in exchange for power and force. This supports one of my favorite principles, Finesse over Power.
Thank you for this video. You continue to inspire me. I am very close to being able to make some of these tools so I’ll keep this in mind. Excellent work.

....You ought to attach a small stopper edge strip, or block to the board that you're resting your "diamond stone" on, as you clean up the hardened chisel, ....(so that you may keep your finger out of the way, so that you can utilize more of the "diamond stone", and, so you don't slice open the end of your finger!) Hello! Excellent video and immediateley I was impressed by how quickly the file removed the scale from the chisel, seems to me like a >must have< which could come in handy for hard spring steel. Thank you for putting down a link. Ill eventually buy myself one of those.

hello..! Greetings from sri lanka..just starting as a hobby,which metal can i uses to make an engraving tool..?
A W1 or O1 steel is good. Or old files can be made soft in a fire and re-used, it's good steel. Also, spring steel, as used in cars suspension is an excellent steel.

you could go with bar stock W1, O1 etc but but legit chisel blanks are forged with a taper, and not easy to find just commonly than the smaller graver blanks which come in all shapes and sizes just they are kind of small. debating if I want gravers or chisels for my engraved brass and pewter pieces

Ay reason grinding down old broken drills aso couldn't be a way to start for a beginner.?
Drills are very hard and brittle so they would be a tough job to shape and very hard throughout the body so prone to vibrating when tapped.

I like it when a master craftsman shows how to make tools. One small comment though. Add a quick demo of the use.

I didn't link to any particular supplier as they are easily available. Googling the brand name and details I supplied will bring up many options depending where you are in the world.
So these were Heat Treated Before you started shaping or after the shaping?
The metal at the start was soft (annealed), hence cut easily with the files.
Good grief!......I just decided I don’t want ANYTHING to do with “graving” as he put it. I’m kinda old (70) and don’t think I would live long enough to sharpen a brand new graver out of the box. Plus I noticed all the equipment used in this trade is a lot more expensive than I realized. 😢.....so, I guess, I’ll just use a sharp 16 penny nail to “engrave” with. I’ve always referred to this (like everyone else) art as engraving soooooo, ain’t gonna change that now. Wonder what they call it in Heaven. Oh, I’ll be a spirit body like Jesus so, I’ll just imagine an inscription (graving) and watch it emerge right before my spirit eyes......hmmmm, with everything else going on up there might not give two shakes for engraving tho. GOD bless you all. 🙏😇🥰
Well, engraving aint for each and every one of us to be actively involved from a to z.
Some will have a go and chip away, as others can observe this action and admire works of artisans.
