      Oh gosh I wish he would! It’s so simple once you get over the fact you’re holding melting metal. You just stick things together like molten metal Lego.

      The controller is really confortable taught, specially for people with larher hands to the point it surprises me it was designed in Japan. The DreamCast controller forced the wrists into an unnatural position yet it doesn't get the amount of criticism the N64 controller gets. The controller set the standard for modern controls we use to this days.

      I'm a big fan of Derek's "There are no good or bad games, just interesting and uninteresting ones". As a kid I loved some games that others thought were terrible, and years later, when he said that, I realized what I had been feeling all that time without knowing the words to put to it; I would always just tell people that I know the games suck, but that I still have a blast with them.

    Not really though, that's how it was set up in the arcade machines. You had a throttle on the left side and right side to control the engines separately.
    Odds are, they left it in for the folks that were familiar with the arcade controls.

    My favorite thing about the N64 controller is that in "snes mode" it actually is ... a default controller with 6 button. And what capcom did? NOTHING. Capcom was like "we will port street fighter for the genesis that has 3 buttons but not the n64 that has 6 buttons as default". In another dimension Street Fighter Ex 64 exists and it is awesome

    • @thestripedmenace
      @thestripedmenace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I remember a Street Fighter III New Generation port for the N64 being rumored at some point, hell, it was possibly a 64DD port even. But we ended up not getting it, and it (alongside 2nd Impact) remained arcade-exclusive for almost two years until the Double Impact pack got released for the Dreamcast in 1998.
      I don't think SFEX or any other Capcom 3D arcade game would ever have reached the N64, though, as those were developed on PS1-based hardware until the NAOMI/Dreamcast rolled around (with the exception of Final Fight Revenge, which was on the Saturn-based SEGA Titan Video).

      The lack of fighting games is one of the biggest reasons the N64 is my least favourite console between it, the Saturn and the PS1. The Saturn had Virtua Fighter 2 and the best ports of most Street Fighter games, Playstation had Soul Edge and Tekken, and the N64 had close to nothing. The "stealth" dual analogs in Sin & Punishment reminds me of something weird I encountered back in 2013 during the Xbox One launch.
    A friend came over and we were trying to play local 2-player in Forza Motorsport 5. If you remember back in the 360 days, signing into your Xbox Live account on another console was actually a somewhat lengthy process, so we were trying to avoid that and instead of logging in on his own account, he logged in as a guest user on my account. This somehow ended up with both of us controlling the same car. Both controllers had full control, and we managed to win a race with one of us handling the steering and the other working the pedals. I don't know if it's been patched or if it's still possible to do that, but it was a pretty weird way to play!

    To solve the start button issue: if you want, you can simply open the case, get some thin wires, and carefully solder from the contacts on the player 1 start button to the corresponding pads on the player 2 side to trigger both from the same button, assuming the creator didn't cut the internal PCBs (which it doesn't look like they did).
    You might want to cut a small hole through the top of the enclosure and add a switch in between one of your added wires which will be able to turn off this dual functionality in case it causes the game to pause and immediately unpause.

    Goldeneye also has a control option that lets you strafe with the DPad and aim with the control stick, which gets pretty close to feeling modern without needing 2 controllers. I was playing through it recently, and it's kind of wild how much better that felt to my Halo trained brain.

    The Atari 5200 did have a controller dock that held two controllers for games like Robotron 2084 and Space Dungeon so it's more dual analog for Smash TV type controls but it is Dual Analog via two controllers way back in the early 80s.

    Star Wars Rouge Squadron is another N64 game that lets you use dual analogue controls. If you enter "chicken" as a passcode in the options menu, you can play a small bonus level where you control an AT-ST walker. Controller 1 lets you walk the AT-ST around the level, while Controller 2 lets you aim the turret and shoot.

    Sin & Punishment's second controller being able to aim and shoot was designed to be a pseudo two-player mode where one player moves and the other aims and shoots. This was expanded upon in the second game where the second player took the role of a disembodied second gun that just assisted the first player through the game. I've beaten both games by myself and with friends.

    I love the design of the N64 gamepad. I think the z-trigger under the analog stick is perfect for FPS games. The Yellow c-buttons are no different than using the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard. I used the d-pad to play through Resident Evil 2, Mischief Makers and a few other 2D games. Sometimes it was used for additional functions. I found the D-Pad to be really good.

    I remember being so confused by the dual analogue controls in Goldeneye as a kid. The idea of that control style was so foreign to me that I assumed it was supposed to be some weird multiplayer setup. I could never grasp why someone would want to have one person controlling half the inputs and someone else controlling the other half. It wasn't until many years later that I realized the intent was to have one controller in each hand.
