O. MG. As a young girl, my grandmother taught me how to knit, crochet and do crewel embroidery. As I grew into a teen and adult I stopped doing it. You are the FIRST artist I’ve come across on the web who’s incorporating embroidery with their painting. What a wonderful concept!
Thanks so much! It was really such an exciting project, I definitely want to pursue it more in the future!
it's actually beautiful when you hold the painting up to the light, the holes are like little dew drops catching the light... (a smaller needle would fix this but it's a happy accident) i'm a total perfectionist so it's hard to open myself up to these sorts of things but as i do it more i've realized that the accidents actually make the work better than you can imagine it in your head, like divine intervention or something
Only 4 mins in and I immediately subbed. I feel bad to admit that at first I thought I was gonna be bored. I thought you were going to talk in front of the camera the entire video and almost clicked away. BUT was pleasantly surprised by all the layers. It gets more interesting as I watch! Love it! Def an inspiration for my own art vlogs.
Thank you! 🤗
I like your paintings but how beautiful painter you are Brooke!
That burns.. 😏
I personally love the light shining through the artwork like stars in the night sky. It adds another dimension to the piece only visible under specific viewing conditions. Similar to the new dimension added by the volume of the embroidery.
I also love the back embroidery as an artwork in itself. Its like the lines are trying to become something, but are ultimately incomplete. Which actually hints at how they are part of the whole.
abstract
The great thing about these aspects of the finished artworks is, even if they aren't visible when hung up, they are documented in this video, which has become part of the work, through the story of its creation. I love what you have done, please keep experimenting :)
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that! :)
Beautiful art work! The video editing is pretty good too, I enjoyed this video.
Thanks Jack! Glad to hear it :)
How’d you get so smart? Listening and watching you brings me a sense of calm
14:39 🎉 congratulations! You took a risk and it paid off 👏 yeah you’re reminding me that every once in a while we have to dip into process mode. No matter how scary it may be... product mode pays the bills but process mode stretches your creative energy
It's a brave move, I was also nervous and hearing how the needle went through the canvas for the first time made me shudder.
I see that you are going through a stage of overflowing creativity and that is a blessing for any creative mind (normal in geniuses like you).
You already combined realistic with abstract, you already embroidered a painting, what's next for you? because I'm sure you have no limits, and it's refreshing to see how someone who is already successful goes beyond the conventional. Thank you for that and keep surprising us.
Thanks a lot Mauricio! I appreciate it😊 Not sure what's next... we'll see when inspiration strikes!
I love how your paintings make me think about things differently.
She has such a great personality and it shows through the beauty of her work.❤
I totally agree, her personality is well up there and such a pleasure to watch her.
I took a risk 15 years back when I decided to become a full time artist But in the end, it turned out to be okay, I even embraced social media aspect and sharing my art with the world now 😊
I just saw this video and have a suggestion in regards to the holes that show light through: simple solution would be to add a backing to cover all the threads which will also keep the light out and therefore you won’t see the holes, especially if you add a black backing. In addition you may want to add a dab of paint here & there on the bigger holes. I’m sure that will easily camouflage any remaining visual disturbance.
And kudos for thinking of such a clever idea. Keep going with it -see how you far you can push it- I think it’s a great idea!
Thank you for the vid- both entertaining & thought provoking.
Got to go run and see what I can come up with in the studio!
Thanks again!
SARA
Wow! Time flies! I started watching when you were getting mentored and painting food paintings 🖼
You’ve inspired me so much over the years. My profile pic is something I painted 5 years ago after being inspired by your vignettes ❤
That is so nice, thank you so much! All the best to you with your art! 🤗
@@b.cormier 💕 🎨 🖼 🤗 🗺
If art is this fun. You simply continue to create and smile and grow.
From seeing your stitches, I would have never guessed that you are a beginner embroiderer :D You did everything right: doing a test sample and going with quality materials. These are steps that help enormously but are often overlooked.
The colors of your painting are so beautiful - as is the painting itself of course. The stitches sit nicely in the painting without taking too much attention.
It looks so lovely! I've also gone out on a whim in the past with mixed media on canvas. I see my art pieces and think they look so cool, yet no one else seems to share that notion with me. XD They are quite niche and nerdy, but I loved experimenting. Please continue letting your creativity take the wheel! It's already led you to such a beautiful place.
Thanks Jessica! I'm sure you'll find a tribe who also thinks their cool, in the meantime, keep creating what you love! 🙌
This is so beautiful Brooke as always! You didn't come this far just to come this far!! Nietzsche says "There are no beautiful surfaces without a terrible depth" which means every beautiful thing we see is an abstraction of huge complexities, all the struggle/hard decisions to take/ doubt/ anxiety... will pay off one day big big big time! wish you the very best ✨✨✨✨
Thank you so much! Loved the quote 😊
Great sense of humor 👏‼️💐. Beautiful painting…at first, I couldn’t believe that you’d “ruin” your artwork with needles but the result is lovely 🖼💐‼️
Haha thanks a lot for watching Joan! 🙏
Love your enthusiasum, it turned out beautiful. For the backing you can always cover it with craft backing paper comes in a roll, it'll look great, and no one will be the wiser. Love it all.
As an artist in my 40+ years I experience and enjoy seeing how people always enjoy what they have not seen in art before or my art as well. Whether its graphic design or paintings. People always love or enjoy what they have not seen me do before withing my given style of course which is very broad after years of work. Experimenting usually is expected from my experience.
That's great that you feel comfortable and encouraged to experiment freely! I hope after 40+ years I can do the same 🙏
All the best in your experiments Jeff!
Great to see you build something new artistically and business wise!
It turned out so good, Brooke! The painting looks so cool ✨ And I like your humour 😂❤
Thanks a lot Celine! :)
A black backboard should take care of the holes showing. Blessings
Wow, this video has it all! It was relaxing, funny, visually beautiful and inspiring, exactly what I wanted to watch on lazy Sunday morning ❤. The painting and embroidery look amazing. Awesome work Brooke! 😊 Greetingssss~
My actual level of riskiness in traditional art is: "I'm going to buy this new sketchbook and a nice box of gouache paint, but I'm gonna let it dry in dust rather than fail working with it" 👌
The only thing that is forcing me to do things differently is that I'm absolutely sick of digital art at the moment, and that's really something, considering that it is what I've done for the last 20 years!
But hey, talking about fear of failure I've just noticed a new video of yours (wink wink) Gonna watch it immediately!
Brilliant work, Brooke. Life is risk and there will be successes and failures. My advice - never be afraid to take a risk - if you don't, you will never find those other successes. And, you always have your "tried and true" to fall back on. You are young and have a brilliant career ahead of you - now is the time to play. BTW - will you varnish that?
Thanks a lot Trent, I appreciate it! 😊 and yes, I varnished it before I embroidered it!
I love embroidery too and that you tried this experiment out, it’s beautiful as I knew it would be. I also appreciate the surprising fact that the holes from the needle left those open spaces! I did not expect that to happen! :/ Thanks so much and I really enjoy your videos! 👍♥️
Thanks Barbara! I really appreciate it 🤗
maybe try applying a black cloth or felt into back of canvas !!!
Absolutely adore your personality and your paintings too. Thanks for making these vids!
Thank you! That means a lot 😊
You could put black sort over the back of the painting attaching it to the stretcher bars, which accomplishes two things covers all the knots and stitches on the back and makes it hard for light or light colored walls to show through the holes in the canvas.
Thank you so much for the inspirational message to me and all aspiring artists. You have phenomenal talent, and the sharing of your ideas is much appreciated. You are also a lovely lady. Again, thank you.
Thank you Larry! 😊
I really enjoyed seeing you do this it was interesting to see two mediums that you don't usually see together being put together.
I just finished a new painting early hours of this morning (Australia time) titled "The Broken Dolls". I used to paint in this weird new school gothic punk style, I eventually got bored of it even though people loved it. I lost a lot of people when I switched to doing stuff like flowers, portraits, graffiti stencils etc. then recently in just a few days learnt surrealism like Salvador Dali used to do, I put my own flavor in and "the Broken Dolls" was the first surrealism piece I did and I really enjoyed painting even though I can only afford to buy acrylics I layer them up to make them look like oils I little something I learnt long ago.
if you're interest in seeing the work I did you can find it on my channel, I'm not going to link it because that's disrespectful to do on someone else's video.
I tend to go from my usual to something different. im a shapes artist, and now i have numerous other creatives going.. canvas, glass cutting ,vase painting, clay all sorts... so its a great change when i get bored with painting on canvasses .
I LOVE this video. Please do more like this! Could you also do more art vlogs of your day/week?? Love your channel Brooke, God bless you ;)
Thanks Mylie! Definitely noted! ✅
Loved the pic and the embroidary! I started painting 8 months ago...never took any art classes in HS. So, totally a newb. Doing abstract impressionism and acrylic paints. Can't draw, can't paint, but having a great time with the new hobby!
I've recently be taking risks and experimentation too, everything you've said is so true. Love your work by the way. It looks amazing.❤
Thanks Samuel! Hope you're enjoying your experiments 🤗
The painting is gorgeous. You may be aware of this but I’ll mention it just in case, that embroidery thread is comprised of 6 pcs that you can divide. Perhaps a thinner needle and experimenting with less threads might soften the hole punches.
good afternoon! The back side of the canvas can be treated with special silicone glue or rubber as processed when creating handmade carpets, it will remove the enlightenment and at the same time fix threads.
It's super cool. If i was a person who buys paintings, and not a person who tries to sell them, i would definetely go for this one
Clever idea that really turned out well!
I often do semi-realistic nature/wildlife art and post it on my Instagram page. It looks jarring when I post my experimental art there so I started an additional Instagram page to post the 'weird' stuff. So far no followers and very few likes, LOL, but it gives me an outlet for the fun, explorative art I like to do.
Thanks Brooke for the nudge. I was a portrait/nude artist for 25 yrs when I had to slow way down to become a caregiver for my Mom. I was only painting 2 or 3 paintings per year. Now I'm back to full time and have been struggling to get started again. Your words were very helpful in motivating me. It's a journey but all help is appreciated. Keep up the good work and the great videos.
Brooke trying to keep a straight face while doing an intro is great!
😂
You can add interfacing on the back. It’s applied with an iron and comes in both black and white.
This looks beautiful! Such a creative idea, keep experimenting Brooke❤
Thank you so much! 🙏
Thanks so much, Brooke, for sharing your journey. I am an abstract and collage artist so, not attempting realism at all - yet, you encouraged me to stretch and try new things in my own work. Thanks so much! And I LOVE the addition of the embroidery thread.
Put a backing on the frame to get rid of light thru holes. I loved the video. When I used to embroider I only used 3 strands of thread. You are so talented.
Don’t know what to do with those tall salads 🥗 & scrambled eggs, they’re calling again!
Thank you Brooke Cormier & good night, we ❤ you!
OMG lol, you’re so talented and you’re hilarious, currently doing art commissions myself, following you for support and inspiration, thanks for sharing your process
I loved it! I had a thought, maybe you could swatch the different stitches, threads on the sample smaller canvas with the same number of gesso to see the look first before you go in with the real thing? Your paintings and videos are always so nice to see! As for your question, my current project is to build my own creative language, I am right at the beginning of the journey, which feels like one big risk, but one I'm willing to take. Otherwise we would never know!
Thank you! I will try experimenting on smaller canvases in the future 😊
Your project sounds awesome, good luck!!
@@b.cormier Thank you! I look forward to seeing your videos
Black felt on the back would hide the holes and make a lovely backing
Enjoy your videos! Like most artists, I started painting representational art, in the realism genre, 35 years ago, but over the years, I’ve gone more and more abstract, and love it! Personally, I think abstract is true creativity as you’re not simply copying nature, still life or figures.
Thank you for this reminder to get out of your comfort zone.
Right now I'm working on a new channel and I constantly try to strike a balance between what I know works and what I want it to be ... let's see how it goes.
Thank you for watching! And good luck with your new channel :)
I love how it highlighted those poppies. Fun going.
absolutely love it! very naturally and subtly embedded. great accents 🤩
Thanks so much! 🤗
I absolutely love the painting and the added embroidery! My favorite part of the video had to be your different commentary from the fashion risks to quoting the Suit Life of Zack and Cody!😂
HAhahah I was wondering if anyone was going to relate to the suite life of zack and cody reference 🤣 thank you!!
I really liked this video. It made me feel calm! I’ve been wanting to incorporate various elements into my abstract art, so that’s what I’m experimenting with. Things like text, book pages, gold leafing, embroidery is next.
Thanks a lot Sierra! A mixed media abstract sounds really cool!
I absolutely love this!!!! SO MUCH!! I love painting and I love embroidery. But it has never occurred to me to combine the two. What a fantastic idea. 😁
I'm new to your channel and very happy to have stumbled upon it! The finished product looks awesome :)
Thanks a lot Paula! :)
Have you considered applying some paint to the back of the canvas at the holes to plug them?
I really like the concept, and of course the final product. It adds a lot of depth and character and makes your work stand out. I used to build crazy car stereo enclosures and always thought mixing different materials (carpet/vinyl/plexiglass/metal grills) adds a lot of texture to the finished piece making it more interesting. The embroidery does the same. I have been contemplating trying something similar for my artwork like trying different canvas shapes, including an infinity mirror into the painting somehow, or even having a 3 dimensional surface (wavy/etc.).
I think since the painting will be hung on a wall, I won't have to worry about any light penetrating it from behind!
And the stereo enclosures sound really cool! 🙌
been feeling this fear of expanding HEAVY recently
aww THANK YOU Isobel 💖expand expand! love you!
I'm new to your channel and love just about everything about your videos. Very relaxing, great sense of humour and beauty all round, including your home, which looks absolutely beautiful from what we can see. Not forgetting your pup, he/she is adorable.
I see full of art in your heart! Colorful and beautiful.👍👍👍
Totally love your experimentation era and can relate to you about it! Sending you lots of hugs and support :)
Thanks so much! Enjoy your experimentation era too! 💫
That’s beautiful. I love your humor too. 😊
Your one of my favorite artist and TH-camr 💕 this video made me so happy
Awe thank you so much Anna! 🤗 I really appreciate it
This is what happens with all the passions we follow. Initially we experiment a lot because there is nothing to lose, then we find something we can make work financially, then we stop experimenting and feel trapped. I guess the only way to move on from that is to allocate a certain portion of our time and resources to experimentation, no matter what. And remind ourselves that 'playing it safe' is an illusion anyways because eventually even the most 'secure' stream of income will break away if we don't evolve, as people grow tired of anything if you wait long enough.
Well said! 🙌
Really pretty! Maybe some kind of backing? Being a fashion designer that’s done a lot of hand embroidery I am loving this beautiful piece
Hy Brooke i haven't embroidered on canvas but all my embroidery fabrics I always back iron on interfacing available at fabric shops. Love your colour choices in that work. Best Jo
This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen 🥺🥺😭😭😭😭
The music you're choosing and the calm vibes, remind me so much of Mister Rogers in the best kind of way. Great job! It's therapeutic just watching and listening.
Man I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! So happy I recently stumbled upon your account.
stunning work!!! the light comes thru the petals and your brushwork wow!!!
Freaking awesome! If your clients don't like that ........ staying creative is a true artist ... take risks, it's the only way to keep it feeling fresh!
Thank you! And amen! 🙏
Gloriously dotty and a joy to watch, thank-you.
Brooke!! It's a gorgeous painting!! Have you sold it yet? I'm interested. Thoroughly enjoyed the video and I have massive amounts of questions. And you did FRENCH KNOTS!! It took me, I kid you knot, YEARS to learn to do a french knot. Heding off to you website now. Thank you for trying this out!
Oh my gosh - seeing the final piece was beyond what I had imagined. So beautiful and unique!
Holy crap, I'm mesmerized! I'm dying with that zack and cody reference! Fantastic job though, I could only dream of making something like this :O!
LOVE ❤️. I STARTED DOING this about a year ago. I paint with watercolor on cotton canvas or on fabric. Then I go wild stitching. So fun
Awesome!!
Hello, I just found you and I must say I really enjoyed your videos, specially this one. It’s a great idea to do embroidery on a canvas. As fellow artist I think this is fantastic and keep on makings risks. Sometimes they work and sometimes dont but that is the point to help you grow as an artist. Great job!
well i have seen people on youtube who wouldnt put in half the effort you did in their video and they have hundreds and thousands of followers, hopefully people notice your effort and all the hardships pay off, also nice editing love your transitions choice of music which isnt too loud and annoying and camera quality too, watching this video in 4k dang the roses, birds, the details and yea seen your podcast/interview on kelsey's channel once you get enough engagement from the audience you can make your own merchandise people love that stuff like chibi pins,stickers,shirts/hoodies with your catch phrase you use in the videos and all, dont worry to experiment on digital stuff too since you already started your first digital art, aaron blaise was skeptical about digital art when he was doing traditional animation but he managed to get through it and now he does both digital and traditional arts, there are artists who manage both digital and traditions stuff so good luck with the future projects and congrats on 15k subs take care!
Thanks so much! It does take a lot of effort, so I appreciate you saying that ☺
This is so fun and the threads you chose were spot on. The rise of mixed media has been great, would you consider ever doing a series like this?
Such detailed creativity... Beautiful ❤️😍. I love that you selectively chose where to crochet... Genius
Thank you!! 🥰
I prefer the original Cornier over Jackson Pollock on the backside....love it actually!! looks awesome!!
Haha thanks a lot Markus! 🙏
That's so beautiful! Glad you took the risk.
I love this idea! Why would you need different art over your table?! This is beautiful.
I’d love to know how you organize your time to do everything! Paint/edit/print/ ship etc. it’s amazing!
giiiiiiirl it is not easy hahaha. I'm still figuring it out 😂 but I will keep that in mind for a future video!
Love this! Your videos are so darn cute! Your art is incredibly beautiful!
That's so weird... I was just gifted two bags of absolutely beautifly colours of embroidery floss and I was thinking that I was going to use them on my paintings - and VOILA! - here you are doing so! I think it turned out great! You used it judiciously, without overwhelming the actual painting. I was wondering whether you were going to spray the front with fixative to keep the threads clean. One thought I had for the holes in the canvas was to either paint over the holes with the appropriate colour on the back (time consuming, yes) or just paper over the entire back of the canvas like they used to do. Whatever you do, I'm so glad to see you experimenting and having fun and bringing new life to an old art! You GO, girl!
Synchronicity!! You should definitely try it, it's a lot of fun :) Thanks for watching!!
@Brooke Cormier My pleasure Brooke. I love your work. I found you from the Kelsey Rodriguez interview, and now I've been following you and also watching the Tim Packer mentorship interviews. Nice to see the success and beautiful work of a fellow Canuck! 🇨🇦 I think you could teach courses too, in person. Take a bunch of us to a secret island. I'd volunteer be your assistant!🎨🖌
Hello 😍 what a cozy channel I just happened to find! I love the relaxed vibe your videos have ❤ keep up the good work!
Back at it agin 🎉
I just discovered you on my newsfeed and for some reason I thought you were going to talk about taking risks as an artist as like an overall discussion but it being a soothing and beautiful and silly video of you actually doing said risk taking was a pleasant surprise, im glad I clicked and stuck around and you’ve got a new subscriber out of me! I’d also be your friend. You’re fun. Celebrating you and your inching out of your comfort zone!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you sticking around 🤗
Hey there Brooke,
my dream is to also become a fulltime artist in a few years, or atleast make SOME money with it. So far i would consider everything i do as "experimental". I have this giant project in my mind where everything will come together to in the future, but it's nothing classical as you do and i hope that someone will appreciate my colourful psychedelic approach. A big part of WHY i want to become an artist is, that i truly enjoy following my creative dreams. And i would see drawing the same thing over and over again just because a viewership or the people that normally buy your art anticipate it as rather limiting. I hope you find your way coming over those fears and still be able to make a living off it! This video is a big inspiration :)
Awesome! I'm happy to hear your working towards your artistic dreams and that this video can serve as some inspiration 🤗 I wish you all the best on your journey and thanks a lot for watching!
You are adorable and I love your calm and cool demeanor.Just started following you after you redid your terrace garden…I’m a gardener and as a gardener I have a artist within me…that embroidery touch to the painting really gave depth…loved it…keep on trucking 💕👏
Thank you so much! I'm happy you stuck around 🤗
Love your creativity well done the poppys pop 🖼️
That looked great when you showed the final piece with the threads entwined on the painting, before you did that though, I was like What?? are you crazy?!!!! lol
I find it best to just throw yourself into the risky experimental art, as everything is a learning experience, even if it doesn't work out you can try it different each time and learn from it!!
Haha thanks a lot Wayne!
Pretty awesome, I love texture on my paintings I use drywall mudd (don't have the patience for embroidery)
Love your personality and your editing is top notch!
Maybe u could do a behind the scenes on how you film.
I'm starting an online art school and super nervous about Sharing my work but I want to document my experience and my growth (even if it's just for me)
Beautiful work I came across your video about IG and now after this video I'm subscribing 😊
Hi, your painting is beautiful. Plus that add on those embroideries makes your painting outstanding n unique. I would like to suggest that you don't have to make knots at the end of your thread instead having back stitch twice. So the back of your painting will look nice.
Thank you! And thanks for the tip! I am a beginner embroiderer so that is really helpful :)
