Pirates actually start arriving five minutes into the video. They abort the attack and retreat without a shot being fired. Save yourself some time and skip this one.
Somebody pointed out that the Royal Navy had spent millions of pounds trying to combat piracy in the 21st century, but that in the 18th century they had achieved it by spending just a few pence on wooden planks.
This is not a hired security company, this has been a collaboration with the Dutch government to protect ships in this area against piracy. The people on this ship are Dutch marines who provide protection. That they walk in civilian / sports clothing is because some are not on duty at that time, only when situations occur as in the video.

If that occurs, we as security contractors have already failed. Owners of the vessels would not be happy and we would more than likely lose our contract. We are there to deter pirates from boarding and less lethal means will always be employed first. Lethal force is the absolute last resort. Of course we will fire warning shots across their bow at distance. Once the skinnies are up against the vessel and after throwing and securing hooks begin to traverse the freeboard, that's where I will pray for them as they are gonna get smoke checked

The gunners should have been hidden until the attack, then the pirates would bekilled so they could not attack another ship. Do not announce your intentions. Just appear and shoot them as they attack.
There's multiple reasons not to do that. Mostly because the pirates usually have RPG's and can fire at the water line, even a hit above the water line can be expensive in downtime for repairs. Also it's in the interest of the defence personnel to scare the pirates of. Another ship is someone else's problem and creates work for security companies.
Great initiative by the Dutch government in using their defence forces for anti-piracy roles: a win win : experience for the troops & effective strategy to counter piracy.
Trouble is with this approach the pirates will keep going until they find a soft target. So a short term setback for the pirates. Better to get the message out you want be going home if you engage in piracy. Permanent solution.

I want to start a cruise line. Get the out of service cruise ship and go on a "Pirate" cruise. Of course the price will be very high. But not only will the meals etc be furnished...but the weapons and ammo will also be furnished. Just listen for the announcements over the PA system....Pirates spotted starboard side, first come first served.

I've always thought the way to make the pirates leave everyone alone would be to have a covert, extremely heavily armed shipping vessel, with a manifest of extremely valuable cargo sail around the area a lot. Periodically repaint/flag/name/modify the exterior of the vessel as camouflage., ..... Exterminate any attackers, after a while, and with enough pirates not returning home, the cost/benefit analysis on being a pirate becomes too costly.
These are amongst the poorest people on earth - they are just trying to feed their families in the middle of a war zone. And in the great majority of cases they haven't been violent towards crews. Fight them off, for sure. but there's no need for extra-judicial murder. Killing people is rarely the answer to anything - it just deprives kids of their fathers and builds hatreds.

I was hired company LLS SAPU, Special anti pirate unit and searten ships depending of the load we wore contracted to protect the ship, crew and the cargo. And we had many times support from Nato or Russian air support, great greetings for them👍👍👍 and there's a lot of attacks on the ships yust 4 the record.
The mission was to protect the ship! Posturing, etc to prevent any chance of damage to vessel or personnel with direct action being last resort! Also, unlike pirates & terrorists these guys are bound by maritime law, international law, Geneva convention etc. If they were "attacked" then they would absolutely have "green light" to engage & defend themselves & the ship! Also, sounds like a Coalition Warship was nearby meaning witnesses but also backup!!!

Crew: At least 2 Filipinos were heard talking, saying something like _"perhaps they haven't met pirates before."_ Guards: Professional soldiers on official duty for the government, they were marines from the Royal Dutch Navy. Marines' shorts and relaxed clothing because they are "off duty" unless a situation like this arises.

Pirates retreat when upon seeing trees and shrubs moving around on the ship, and being extremely superstitious, it was considered a bad omen. Successful tactical planning by the A Team!
Armed guards is one of tge mitigation measures suggested by Best Management Practice guidelines from major shpping organizations and IMO and it is clearly the best deterrent for pirates that keeps them at a distance.
When you´re on board a ship that sailes through these dangerous waters you feel much calmer when there are armed guards on board. I worked on a cruise ship of about 100.000 ts and it would have been a nightmare if some pirates would have boarded the ship. Additionally we shut off every illumination source during nighttime and sailed with a speed that didn´t produce a big bow wave.
Reminded of service duty SOP, hurry up, wait, nap, and then shut happens, repeat. Looks kind of fun. But also a bit hard to blame the pirates knowing how corporate fishing is basically took away their livelihood.
I would say that having very visible fire power is a mixed blessing. In this case, the pirates see the fire power and go away. But this also tells them who has fire power & who doesn't, and those that don't are more likely to be attacked. If the fire power is shown & used when the actual attack begins, some of these pirates will be killed and some boats destroyed. This would be a great deterrent to other pirates as they will now know that's it's a gamble to attack ANY ship.

Luckily for the Filipino seamen though was that the guards probably didn't need to have encountered pirates before, they would still know how to handle such a situation. They were highly trained soldiers, marines of the Royal Dutch Navy. Their shorts and relaxed clothing because they are "off duty" - except for a situation like this.
It'd be nice if people filming with their cell phones wouldn't just automatically revert to filming vertically. There is a horizontal option too, usually makes the video a lot better and shows a lot more situational detail in frame.
Dutch Marines in this case, but there are also several private companies offering this service to ships in that region. The right to armed defense against piracy at sea is well-established in international maritime law, but it is sad that this seems to be the only way to effectively deter this activity. Imagine being so driven by poverty that this is the only way you can try and earn a subsistence. That said, a credible threat of force is necessary to stop these pirates.

The gunners should have been hidden until the attack, then the pirates would bekilled so they could not attack another ship. Do not announce your intentions. Just appear and shoot them as they attack.
There's multiple reasons not to do that. Mostly because the pirates usually have RPG's and can fire at the water line, even a hit above the water line can be expensive in downtime for repairs. Also it's in the interest of the defence personnel to scare the pirates of. Another ship is someone else's problem and creates work for security companies.

The presence of high-powered guns on your Ship is enough to deter the attack of this pirates plus those Armed Guards roaming around the Ship. Imagine a merchant ship with machine guns installed on both side of the ship with complete armored protection. No pirates even on their screw mind will attack you. I've always thought the way to make the pirates leave everyone alone would be to have a covert, extremely heavily armed shipping vessel, with a manifest of extremely valuable cargo sail around the area a lot. Periodically repaint/flag/name/modify the exterior of the vessel as camouflage., ..... Exterminate any attackers, after a while, and with enough pirates not returning home, the cost/benefit analysis on being a pirate becomes too costly.
These are amongst the poorest people on earth - they are just trying to feed their families in the middle of a war zone. And in the great majority of cases they haven't been violent towards crews. Fight them off, for sure. but there's no need for extra-judicial murder. Killing people is rarely the answer to anything - it just deprives kids of their fathers and builds hatreds.
Gonna have agree. Mother ships aren't cheap. A couple go missing and the sharks start following them around, the tactics will change. Granted they'd are just hired goons, by warlords. But hey. Black guns matter.

I was hired company LLS SAPU, Special anti pirate unit and searten ships depending of the load we wore contracted to protect the ship, crew and the cargo. And we had many times support from Nato or Russian air support, great greetings for them👍👍👍 and there's a lot of attacks on the ships yust 4 the record.
A failure, left those pirates to wreck havoc somewhere else, the armed security should be hidden until can launch a suprise attack on the pirates
This was clearly not a military mission. Prevention by deterring was the aim here and it was successful apparently.
The mission was to protect the ship! Posturing, etc to prevent any chance of damage to vessel or personnel with direct action being last resort!
Also, unlike pirates & terrorists these guys are bound by maritime law, international law, Geneva convention etc.
If they were "attacked" then they would absolutely have "green light" to engage & defend themselves & the ship! Also, sounds like a Coalition Warship was nearby meaning witnesses but also backup!!!

Guards: Professional soldiers on official duty for the government, they were marines from the Royal Dutch Navy.
Marines' shorts and relaxed clothing because they are "off duty" unless a situation like this arises.

Armed guards is one of tge mitigation measures suggested by Best Management Practice guidelines from major shpping organizations and IMO and it is clearly the best deterrent for pirates that keeps them at a distance.

When you´re on board a ship that sailes through these dangerous waters you feel much calmer when there are armed guards on board. I worked on a cruise ship of about 100.000 ts and it would have been a nightmare if some pirates would have boarded the ship. Additionally we shut off every illumination source during nighttime and sailed with a speed that didn´t produce a big bow wave.

I would say that having very visible fire power is a mixed blessing. In this case, the pirates see the fire power and go away. But this also tells them who has fire power & who doesn't, and those that don't are more likely to be attacked.
If the fire power is shown & used when the actual attack begins, some of these pirates will be killed and some boats destroyed. This would be a great deterrent to other pirates as they will now know that's it's a gamble to attack ANY ship.

Luckily for the Filipino seamen though was that the guards probably didn't need to have encountered pirates before, they would still know how to handle such a situation. The right to armed defense against piracy at sea is well-established in international maritime law, but it is sad that this seems to be the only way to effectively deter this activity.
Imagine being so driven by poverty that this is the only way you can try and earn a subsistence. That said, a credible threat of force is necessary to stop these pirates.
