Family-In-Laws gave me one for Xmas this year, and it is BEAUTIFUL! HUGE white triple blooms that I'd love to see again once they can. Thanks so much for this video. I plan to follow your instructions with some time differences as I live in Central Virginia, and we should not have frost past March. I am terrible at trying to keep plants alive, but I feel so terrible about taking any life, that I will be giving this little one a chance and NOT just dumping it and hoping to receive a new one next year.
i got a few years ago. I decided to put it outside after blooms gone and it warmed up. It soaked up so much energy. It grew 6 more leaves during the summer. I brought it in and put in fridge in paper bag and thermos bag and had it for 3 seasons. I fell in love. WHy do I do it. JUST TO SEE IF I CAN DO IT. It makes me feel like Im nurturing a precious bulb. I love their big thick blooms Im hooked
Hi, I'm in Michigan so it's cold here after October. I received one of these as a Christmas gift. Do I cut these down and put them in a dormant state like now? Or do I leave them in a sunny window. This would be after taking the wax off. Mine still has blooms on but they are beginning to wilt, so I'll be cutting them down soon. Thank you.
You would put them in a dormant state about 12 weeks before Christmas if you want blooms around Christmas time. You definitely need to pot it up and keep it inside near a sunny window so that the bulb can take in nutrients to be able to bloom again. Once your temperatures warm up in spring ( around 70 degrees make sure the freezing temperatures have passed) take it outside to take in more of that sunshine to continue to let the bulb store up nutrients. I would fertilize it about once a month with some indoor fertilizer. Towards the end of your summer whenever your temperatures are still fairly warm and before it freezes bring it indoor to go dormant. Put it in a area where it gets about 50 degrees and it’s dark. Stop watering it and keep it in that room for around 6-8 weeks. When you want to bring it out of dormancy, put it back in a sunny place and water it in potting soil in a pot slightly bigger than the bulb. I hope this helped!
Just brought our bulb in from the garden and put it in the garage to go dormant. It's going to be brutally cold over the winter. Will it still bloom around the holidays if I just put it in a pot indoors instead?
I would store it in a 50 degree spot inside and let it go dormant for about 4 weeks in a dark spot and let dry out ect. And re pot inside so you can force it to bloom inside during winter. Or you can try just potting it inside and see if it will bloom. You have no control of its bloom time though, if you don’t force it into dormancy.
@FlowerFanatic Thank you. I'll leave it in the garage for a month since it'll probably be close to that temp, and lower. Then I'll have it potted and brought indoors.
I’ve lost to many plants already because I overwater or underwater them. No way I’m going to throw out something beautiful that is easy to care for and gives gorgeous blooms.
I took the wax off of mine and cut it back and I have a new flower coming on mine too! The only thing is- it only has gotten a couple of hair roots so not sure if it will make it or not. I think that is why I do it though, just to see if I can! 🙃
Why not just throw it away and buy a new one next year? That's an unfortunate symptom of our present society. In addition to being wasteful, it shows a lack of reverence for the gift of life. Death is always certain--what isn't is when, and I don't want to be the one to say it.
so sad that you are 'sick of Christmas' and associate the red with something you are sick of. That really makes me sad for you. Perhaps if you appreciated the meaning and significance of Christmas, you wouldn't get so 'sick' of it. How can we get sick of celebrating the miracle birth of our savior?? Red could be a sign of Valentines day, or of love, or passion. It wasn't a good look to put that in about being sick of Christmas.... its a turn-off.
Well, next year I will know what to do.🤭🫤🤔😅. I didn’t throw them away, but they smelled moldy after I took the wax off. I peeled back the covering AND the next layer!😮😮. I sprayed them a few times with antifungal spray, a copper mix, and then a growth promoting one, potted them up and spray watered the pots to damp. They were put by an indirectly bright window, and began filling out and plumping up almost immediately. (All dead matter was removed, and since it’s the middle of July, there was a lot.). Visibly, they look ok and I will keep a close eye on them, but I can only hope they will be ok and start taking root. I’m pretty worried about peeling back that outer layer. 🤨😕🤷🏼♀️ They were potted in a Miracle Grow mix with a layer or two of bark. Maybe they will be ok. What should I have done? (Maybe, I already know.). Live and learn.
I peeled the wax off and tossed it by our deck under a raised planter. It was slimy and nasty looking. A few weeks later it started growing roots and leaves. So I planted it near the deck and it grew insanely all summer long with far too much rain and hardly any sunlight!

You’re welcome. I hope it blooms again!

Yeah. I’m hoping to have blooms this year. I’ll find out soon. It’s pretty amazing how these bulbs can regenerate and keep going. Thought bulbs.

I agree with you 😊 I’m sure you will get more roots.

We are all different. You shouldn’t judge until you actually know me. This is so ironic
You read into this way to deeply.
I’m glad we both love our savior.
