I got a waxed bulb in April. My sister in law told me to put a few drops of water down into the bulb once a month and I'd get more blooms. I'm on my third set of blooms. Now it's ready to plant in soil. I'm going to try your ideas.
Thank you for your explanation! I’m going to give it a try. One TH-cam gardener recommended laying the bottom of the wax-free bulb on a moist paper towel for a week, meaning one has to continually moisten the towel. I prefer this more direct route!
I bought pack of three waxed amaryllis from Costco today. I glad that i've find your channel. otherwise, I will dump these amaryllis after they bloomed.
2 christmas' ago my wife got 3 hippeastrum. They stayed on the dining room table or kitchen window. I do believe they bloomed twice in the wax or bloomed then stayed green. This batch is giving us 3 or 4 leaves 30 inches tall! Difficult to keep them upright. The light is morning light and never direct..she still had all three this spring and potted them as you did. All three were growing in the shade under a patio roof, although not blooming. We live near philly ,pa.. pulled them in november 20th, browning, wilted. Chop chop. Some water and back on the fireplace mantle. Again, recieving moring light only, indirectly. They started in earnest end of december and are now 28 inches tall. They are blooming..each with 2 gigantic luscious red blooms. I time lapsed video taped the entire show..on our 7th day now. I have at least 3 solid days of good film. The blooms opening scene is still in the camera. I cant wait. If you can get a go pro camera or similar device time lapse video the blooms after the green shell cracks open..amazing
Susan, what a coincidence. I was given a waxed bulb amaryllis in November of 2020 and just took the wax off a month ago, potted it up in a six inch pot. The leaves are about eight inches long now and I’m hopeful for flowers soon. Thanks for your videos, been a subscriber for a couple of years now, always enjoy them.
I always enjoy your videos. It is interesting to me why names get mixed up like that; amaryllis = hippeastrum. It is the same with how we call Bison buffalo or a Pronghorn antelope etc. Not sure where it all started but there are probably many other examples. I didn't know about the amaryllis so thank you for that bit of information. But more importantly thank you for teaching us so much about a variety of gardening topics.
Susan, it appears to me that wax coating must have some plastic in it, does it? It seemed hard to peel off. Thanks for showing us this, I've never purchased or been given one with that coating, so this is interesting to watch and follow along. I hope you show the progress once it starts growing. Hi, Margie. I did some quick searching and haven't found any mentions of plastic, just wax. But I agree, the wax was a bit tricky at times. That might just have been because it was so thick.
My mother-in-law gave me one of these last December. It had been growing great. She passed away this May, and I told my husband we need to try to keep this alive. I peeled the wax off last week and it had developed roots. I planted it in a pot. It is growing a lot now! I am so happy and a little emotional about it.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Michele. We haven't had to add any moisture to the bottom of the bulb, and the roots start emerging very quickly.

I got one of these but I have a black thumb, so no pots or soil in my house. What size pot do you need for these bulbs?
