Sad to say this is not indicative of Golden Age singing. Here we have a clearly vocally indisposed Sherrill Milnes who is really fighting against his cord issues and as a result, the voice loses its warm quality it had from the late '70s and takes on this semi-nasal and guttural sound in the middle, never recovering fully. In this opera, especially, he takes more care to do more mezza di voce and attend carefully to more dynamics but it doesn't help him as much.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 I LOVE TIBBETT!! Even have a detailed biography of him. His father was a sheriff in the wild west of Bakersfield, killed by outlaws! Somewhere on youtube was the last 1/2 hour of Emporer Jones. Its mostly talking and as fantastic as his singing. And he insisted all the singers be black, not black face. And when he sings De Glory Road he could make anyone a believer!! Fantastically versatile.................I could go on and on...
Milnes is fantastic in this role. All the authority, charisma and vocal power you can wish for! Coudl you please put up the curse scene too? He's terrifying there :D
Milnes is a superb Boccanegra. In fact, this entire production is top notch, from the cast to the maestro, the scenario, the wardrobe, stage direction, you name it. This is how you pay tribute to this gorgeous Verdian masterpiece. One of my favorite renditions of one of the best of Verdi's concertanti. I keep hoping for this production's video of the second act trio ("Perdon, Amelia...") to resurface here in TH-cam. Does anyone know where to find it?
