I saw this “live” three times and have to say that the singer not mentioned ONCE in these comments, Leona Mitchell, sang Elvira as good as anyone ever sang it. She was cheered to the skies at the final curtain.
Opera at its best. The way they should be staged instead of the cheap,shabby modern day crap we are seeing on stages now. The best cast one can assemble. Milnes booming grand voice. I met him at the Met in the audience,wonderful person. Great to see Jean Kraft and Charles Anthony at the curtain call. When the Met audience loves you they really show it.

Unfortunately for him, that night Paul Plishka simply out sang everyone else on stage as Silva. As I remember, Pinza in a review I once read, had done much the same in the same part. He sang so well he draped a shadow over his colleagues. Milnes was fine but Plishka, that night was better. The audience responded to Plishka enthusiastically - it wasn't just me.
