LIVE & UNSCRIPTED - Freehand quilting a Topographical Meander

  • This REALITY SHOW is streamed LIVE and in real time, with viewer questions and interaction throughout.
I'm working on a lap-size scrap quilt, with a broad variety of colors.
    A few topics:
    - how I choose a thread color
    - loading
    - simple basting
    - keeping the quilt square as I work
    - and a dilemma detailed below...
Because this was streamed LIVE, you get to watch me (and the viewers) work through a dilemma. When I inserted a new bobbin, I couldn't get a stitch to form. I worked my way systematically through various checks including the ones viewers were suggesting. And spoiler - the successful fix was entirely re-threading the top thread.
    #freemotionquilting #longarmquilting #freehandquilting
Here are the details of the quilt I'm working on:
An Old-Fashioned Quilt by Margaret Rolfe from the book titled: "Successful Scrap Quilts from Simple Rectangles" by Judy Turner and Margaret Rolfe.

Love your videos! I don’t know how you stayed sooooo calm through those issues !!! You are a real trooper💖…

This session is helping me to make a check list of what to do if I run into the same issues.

I’ve learned so much from your discussions on choosing thread color. Love your advice to pick the middle of the road color. I was a “pick the lightest color machine quilter” and my go to was always a cream color. I’ve moved onto a caramelly color (as you chose for the quilt in this video) and love how it looks on my quilts. Thank you for all you do!

I find seeing the mishaps really reassuring for me. The things I get 'wrong' aren't so scary as a result. I can learn so much from them.

I’ve spent this past Christmas crying as I couldn’t get my Nolting to pull bottom thread. After two days of fighting with it trying all different kind of things, saw my thread had jumped the upper tension guides. Wish I had seen this earlier. Thanks for being here and showing me I’m not alone.

Indeed you're not! But it does get easier as you know your machine better and better ❤️

OMG! I have learned so much from this episode. I love the quilting design and will try it. The loading tips were very helpful but the best part was when you had to troubleshoot the thread take up. I learned about changing bobbin cases, bobbins, needles and positions, etc. Awesome! Who would have thought that the thread path up top was to blame. I can imagine that it's pretty stressful for you when things go wrong but that is the best part for me as I realize that I'm not alone and I learn how to fix problems. Thank you for such a great show

You're welcome! I think I've gotten over being stressed by it on air 😄 It has become one of the hallmarks of the show - letting it be real.

It is so funny, I had same problem with bobbin not catching yesterday. Gave up for the day. First thing this morning, you addressed this in the first video that came up on TH-cam.

This was the best "whatever happens, happens" video tutorial EVER!!! Thank you and all your viewers for the real-time bobbin change fix; for when the bobbin change does not go smoothly. It was right on time for me, as my bobbin has run out. As a beginner I feel I will be confident should I experience any problems. Thank you for "Live & Unscripted !! I am loving it! I just stumbled onto your channel about 2-3 weeks ago.
By the way, I plan to use the topographical Quilting for an airplane themed quilt. Thank you and your Hubs!
OH...I stayed with you on the Live throughout the entire "troubleshooting."

Thanks for taking the time to comment! It felt a bit awkward to keep folks waiting, and it’s encouraging to know it’s helpful, and therefore totally worth it for me❤️ please share photos, if you can, and tag me with your finished quilt. I’ll cheer you on!

I wasn't on the live but I still watched it all, other than the rethreading which I fast forwarded as I don't have that model machine. It was still so so valuable to see someone else experiencing that difficulty. Especially as confidently and calmly as Susan and David do. How many live viewers helped with suggestions was wonderful too. Just like we would in real life but real life longarming together doesn't happen as a rule.

Someone may have already said this, but when you ran out of the past bobbin, you said that it really flung the top thread. That may have done something to your upper threading, which is the fix that you found worked. I have taught sewing for many years and that is one of the things that often helps. (Rethreading both top and bobbin)😊 I really like this design! It looks like even I might be able to learn it. My new class with you begins tomorrow! Sew excited!

I am currently creating a pieced backing from left over scraps from the front of a quilt I've been working on for months and now hate all the fabric, so want to get rid of every piece of it. It will be my first truly pieced back. Its great to see how to manage centering a top on a pieced back. Thank you!

Just came across you on Instagram and it lead me to TH-cam. I got a long arm from hubby for Christmas and I love using it. I have been wanting to find some new and easy patterns to do on several quilt tops that I have made over the years… I was so happy to find you and see you working on the quilt, so I can watch and practice (there is no one around here teaching long arm). So grateful!!!

My earliest memory of a quilt was at a babysitter's house when I was five or six years old. She made us lay down for a nap. The quilt on the bed that I was sleeping I think was a log cabin, but what fascinated me was the quilting. I think I almost wore the fabric out tracing the pattern with my finger. I am thinking it was a stipple because I had definite lines to trace between.
This topography pattern - - I can just imagine a child being forced to lay down to rest and tracing the "paths" to see how it got started and stopped. Pleasant memory and a new "path" for me to intrigue the most inquisitive, active child if they are of a mind to be challenged.

Until I learned to "pay attention" to the machine personality, I was in constant personality clashes with whatever machine I was new to using. FINALLY! It dawned on me to pay attention to the machine rather than telling the machine, "Here I am, so pay attention!"
I have decided machines have personality because they are designed and produced by human beings. There have even been studies proving that the day of the week that the machine was made has an impact on the way the machine responds to human direction!
I may not understand how that is even possible, but a difference in the operator's attitude determines what the machine can or will do! Who knew??? LOL

I just find it amazing you can watch where you're going and spacially see where you are so you don't run into other lines or run over them. With the busy cream fabric, I think it could be difficult.

When I got my longarm, during basic training I had to rethread the machine. So I rethreaded and it stopped licking up the bottom thread.... it turned out I forgot to thread it into the bit that goes up and down, after the tension disks.

Lint caught under arm of bobbin, run a business card under to sweep lint out. Also try rethreading top making sure presser foot is up so tension disks are open when you rethread.

I just found you last week and while im in my sewing room you are on the TV for inspiration. I saw you mention a needle that you used for removing a long red thread that showed up under the light background. What kind of needle or name of needle is it please? From the other side of the mountains of Washington and is sew exciting finding a quilter from my home state. 💚💚

To date it hasn't been published as a lesson. It will shortly be appearing in my ADVANCE monthly membership, and it has been featured in at least 2 Live & Unscripted episodes. Thanks for your interest, and if you would like more info on the membership, there's a link in the description, or feel free to email me at info@stitchedbysusan.com.

Great question! I have a giant vase, kind of umbrella holder size, and I keep them all upright in there. I keep a few of the tiny pieces in my magnetic bowls on the longarm frame.
