I like this talk, but it gets to me that people associate PTSD with war. I have PTSD from severe repeated childhood trauma and it is just as horrible. Many people are in the same situation as I am. while it's very important to acknowledge what these soldiers are experiencing, it would be nice to be acknowledged more often as well. PTSD can happen from any trauma to anyone, and it's something I'll live with in some form for the rest of my life.

It's because war inflicted ones usually are worse. And also, it's because your government seem to have a terrible healthcare system for especially those men and women.

every individual is different, of course observing or killing others is painful but an innocent child being severely abused can be equally as traumatic, I honestly don't understand how you can belittle someone else's experience or difficulties, like what does that give you? respect one another, stop being so bitter and self-absorbed.

She can only talk about the field she is in. She is not the spokesperson for everything traumatic. Of course it works for all trauma. There is no 'who has it worse' in the world of pain. Compassion for you and others.

PTSD and Development Trauma are completely different. As is Complex Trauma. Repeated childhood trauma = developmental trauma and/or complex trauma, not PTSD. Also, trauma was originally recognized because of a direct correlation between veterans and mental health issues. They used to call it "shell shock" after WW1 because they thought it was due to being around explosives ("shells") and sustaining concussions. Only relatively recently have we begun to attribute it as trauma and expanded it to include any life-threatening or significant negative life event.

I don't know what physical audience she was speaking to at the time of this video and if it was veterans. To me, she was speaking to PTSD victims everywhere. All victims of trauma. Whether a soldier at war or an innocent little girl being sexually abused. I have buddies that have served and suffer from PTSD and I have a daughter that has been severally sexually abused and suffers from PTSD. A great presentation about the focus of how creative arts therapy can help trauma victims! I know it helps my daughter.
      Thank you Melissa for sharing!

To create art is to share a piece of yourself with the world. When you paint, draw, write or craft you are giving your thoughts a place to live outside of your head. You are giving them a home.

I am proud to say that our charity (Forging Ahead Inc.) was made to help veterans and first responders with PTSD/OSI through blacksmithing.
The first day I participated, was the first night in a long time that I slept. Shortly after I became VP of the charity, as I believe in it so strongly and have just recently became President.
I look forward to watch it grow and help others.

Share your pain or it destroys you. This is hardly anything new. Art is just a medium for expression. The difference between now and the past is a society more accepting of everyone's faults, failures, and hurt feelings. It's ok to show weakness, temporarily. Well, ok so it may still get you fired or ostracized or whatnot, but you have SJWs on the doorstep waiting to defend you. No, society still isn't prefect when it comes to accomodating the human condition... but at least we have this art. Yay?

It is discouraging to read about PTSD in the video description as associated only with those who have experienced war. I always feel like a schmuck telling people I have PTSD, because they inevitably ask, "Were you in the military?" When I say I was not, it feels as if I have PTSD-Light. It doesn't seem light to me.

It seems to me that this is the same healing process of EMDR. It helps use both brain hemispheres together when recalling an event and so then the brain can finally assimilate the memory and file it away instead of spinning it around with no where to go.

Dead Joffrey Never knock something that could potentially be life changing for someone. I appreciate that it seems far fetched to you but you are not them. You never know what can work for you without trying. What she alludes to with creativity and the areas of brain activity is a real thing. There are often great artists with very tragic pasts. It's simply another form of therapy, it's a method of rewiring your thinking and association patterns with something manageable. For some it's purging, for others it's part of their process and a stepping stone. We must never discourage any form of therapy if there is good outcome. Keeping an open mind is key.

Art therapy is a well respected and effective form of therapy, recently being used to treat PTSD. If you'd like to know more about it you could read this medical paper on it: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16537321 or you could read accounts from soldiers who have been treating their PTSD with art therapy - this National Geographic article was a particularly good one: www.nationalgeographic.com/healing-soldiers/. The evidence is the men and women who feel more in control of their trauma because of art therapy, just like the one you heard speak in this video.

EssieD yeah if u see the practice in its totality i don't think anyone is qualified to put "boundaries" about when it should be brought up. people already don't bother despite climate change, cruelty, massive loss of human life, and destruction. in fact you can probably argue disease caused by animal product consumption outstrips that of war at least in the us by a fair sight. people take it seriously, advocates can stop talking about it.

I grew up on a farm, I saw the process from birth to death. Animal cruelty is horrible. However, that's not the topic of this video, at all. Be an activist for animal rights all you want, but this video has nothing to do with animal cruelty. It's about war vets suffering from PTSD. That's what I was saying.
Maybe find a video where animal rights is being discussed and bring it up there? It will get much more attention, and better discussions.
