  • The symposium signaled some of the areas in which UCLA specialists in the study of the Americas could engage in productive collaborations with their counterparts in the network of French universities actively involved with the Institut des Amériques (IdA).
One of the central charges of the IdA is the development of an interdisciplinary network of advanced studies and research in the humanities and social sciences in Europe and Latin America, and the United States. The relationship with UCLA is the 12th of its kind.
The symposium featured a graduate student panel representing the fields of Anthropology, History, Film Studies, and Comparative Literature; and a faculty roundtable, that gave opportunity for two UCLA Professors to engage in a dialogue with a French counterpart on the topic of US-Mexico Border studies, featuring sociological, anthropological, public health, and literary perspectives.
The inaugural event was capped by a ceremony that featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding summarizing the basis of future collaborations between the two institutions.
