If you get 0.5% of voters in NY or CA or TX or FL or OH or IL or almost any state you probably get nothing new. You either already have that state or are too far behind to win it with just the extra votes that someone's broad national appeal might get you.

You forgot to mention swing states, but Pete could have the same effect in those states too. After all, in those swing states races are won by a tiny margin, so a tiny margin makes the difference. Also those swing states have a lot of undecided Fox News voters that Pete could bring. So I’d say Pete’s appeal is much greater when he could bring not just a single state but many states!!

Adding a small percentage in a key state _might_ be enough to swing that state, if it's the right state. Adding an even smaller percentage across many states probably won't swing any of them. Most are already yours or are out of reach. And even the close states are not close enough. Shapiro is very popular in the most important swing state. (Most important because it has the largest number of votes and because it is close to the tipping point.) He has demonstrated an ability to win big as governor (in PA), and he may appeal to similar voters in similar key states (MI, WI). Buttigieg hasn't won in any state. His strength should be his campaigning ability, but he is unlikely to bring many votes because of where he's from. (His state of origin is out of reach, and his new state doesn't have any particular affection for him, as far as we can see. He certainly hasn't demonstrated an ability to win in that state.)

Buttigieg actually thrives in debates and interviews, and he always comes prepared with verified facts and figures, simple analogies, and quick responses -- even when he's being grilled by Congress or far-right news hosts. It's pure joy to watch him not only win his opponents over, but put THEM in on defence! After a solid education at Harvard (degrees in History and Literature) and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford (Politics, Economics, and Philosophy), he became a highly paid management consultant at McKinsey & Co. and could be earning far more money than he does. But his devotion to our country led him to public service where he knew he could make a greater difference. And what a patriot! He served in our military as a Naval intelligence officer. All that is true but not relevant! The ONLY thing that is relevant is the PRACTICAL REALITY that what Kamala Harris needs in a VP is someone that drives the voter turnout. She needs to pick someone that gets NON-voters to vote. The ONLY thing that matters at this point is VOTER TURNOUT. Democrats win when there is a large voter turnout. Republicans generally win when there is a low voter turnout. At this point that HAS to be our #1 focus. Kamala Harris is driving up and inspiring new voters. She needs a VP that helps drive up new voter turnout, as well. Reality is that the demographic that she is not driving up enough is white male voters. You have to set aside all the (very) impressive factors about Pete Buttigieg and ask, is he the best VP candidate to drive the most NON-voters to vote, particularly white male voters? And for that you have to ask if American is ready to vote for a (brilliant) gay President? (Which is what they consider when they vote for VP.) Keep in mind, what you and I think DOESN'T MATTER. We're going to vote blue and for Harris no matter WHO she chooses. So WE don't matter at this point. The focus HAS TO BE on the NON-voter and who THEY will vote for. Which VP candidate will help get the most NON-voters to vote? That's the ONLY question that matters. I don't know if Buttigieg, compared to some of the others being considered, provides the largest gain in new Democratic voters. My personal choice at the moment is for Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, with the astronaut background being the biggest magnate for undecided and non-voting white males. Simplistic? Yes. But practical. He's also a good orator - not as good as Buttigieg, but still above average. He can spit fire, and he also represents the Dem position on gun control since his wife was shot in the head and survived when she was a politician. And he might help us win the battleground state of Arizona. His policies - probably not better than Buttigieg's, but I DON'T CARE. The ONLY thing I care about is driving up new Democratic voters. Kelly complements Harris, where Buttigieg reinforces what Harris already has, regarding demographic appeal. My current thinking is that Kelly adds more new voters and expands the crucial voter turnout more than the other VP contenders.
I would love to see him as V.P but I heard he doesn't want the job. 1. He has infant twins and they are under 3yrs. It was something he and his partner wanted for years. He wants to wait until they are older and doesn't want to be far away from them. 2. He said he still has alot of work he wants to do with the infrastructure law that is supposed to get additional funding this year. I'm from Indiana so I ❤ him but he is young and knows what he wants. Pete Buttigieg is the one person in government today that exudes honesty and sincerity. He is effective and gets things done for the people. Look at his record. I believe he is the perfect fit for the VP position.

Remember his job is to be a politician and get you to like him, and he’s been doing a great job at that the past few days, I liked what he said a lot, i think it would definitely help the democrats if they chose him for the VP, most Americans are in support of gay rights at least, and the Republicans using Pete being gay against him would backfire, he and his partner have children together, and exude some real family values, that will shine very loud to moderate Americans, and of course progressives aren’t going to be turned away from Pete for anything like that, and if he can keep the same style of messaging we’ve seen the last few days he won’t offend progressive or moderate sensibilities. We need to make a big focus of just how weird these far right people are and how unamerican they behave, it will be a unifying message because most people don’t want to lose the progress we’ve made to crazy people. I’m also very open to Tim Walz for VP, he has less name recognition but is very articulate and good at fighting against Republicans.

If he's the future of the Democratic party, that kind of experience would make him truly formidable. I have always liked Pete since he first became secretary of transportation. Pete is a cabinet member and can be replaced, but would be an amazing VP candidate. He would also be a on a path to be US President in 8 years.

He does have 2 characteristics that are traditionally electoral negatives; he has a strange, non-Anglo family name and he's of short stature (there's a lot of unacknowledged "height supremacy" in US presidential politics). Our country hasn’t proven to be emotionally mature enough for a woman president, I seriously doubt they would take a black woman and a gay man. Because if you "get" 2% of voters in Pennsylvania you probably get 19 electoral college votes. If you get 0.5% of voters in NY or CA or TX or FL or OH or IL or almost any state you probably get nothing new. You either already have that state or are too far behind to win it with just the extra votes that someone's broad national appeal might get you.

Yes, those are the calculations. Those may not be the numbers (2% and 0.5%), but they illustrate the point. Adding a small percentage in a key state _might_ be enough to swing that state, if it's the right state. Adding an even smaller percentage across many states probably won't swing any of them. Most are already yours or are out of reach. And even the close states are not close enough.
Shapiro is very popular in the most important swing state. (Most important because it has the largest number of votes and because it is close to the tipping point.) He has demonstrated an ability to win big as governor (in PA), and he may appeal to similar voters in similar key states (MI, WI). Buttigieg hasn't won in any state. His strength should be his campaigning ability, but he is unlikely to bring many votes because of where he's from. (His state of origin is out of reach, and his new state doesn't have any particular affection for him, as far as we can see. He certainly hasn't demonstrated an ability to win in that state.)

All that is true but not relevant! The ONLY thing that is relevant is the PRACTICAL REALITY that what Kamala Harris needs in a VP is someone that drives the voter turnout. But practical. He's also a good orator - not as good as Buttigieg, but still above average. He can spit fire, and he also represents the Dem position on gun control since his wife was shot in the head and survived when she was a politician. And he might help us win the battleground state of Arizona. His policies - probably not better than Buttigieg's, but I DON'T CARE. The ONLY thing I care about is driving up new Democratic voters. Kelly complements Harris, where Buttigieg reinforces what Harris already has, regarding demographic appeal. My current thinking is that Kelly adds more new voters and expands the crucial voter turnout more than the other VP contenders.

I agree. He does have 2 characteristics that are traditionally electoral negatives; he has a strange, non-Anglo family name and he's of short stature (there's a lot of unacknowledged "height supremacy" in US presidential politics). On the other hand, he wouldn't be towering above the president when standing next to her, which could also be a negative in this case. I'm sure VP Harris will make a wise choice, though, and I support the Harris/tba ticket 100%.

Our country hasn’t proven to be emotionally mature enough for a woman president, I seriously doubt they would take a black woman and a gay man. Hopefully we can get over this first hurdle and prove that the sky isn’t falling and then progress to Pete for POTUS. We are a nation playing tug of war with one side trying to reverse time and recreate the 20th century and the other side try to push forward to bigger and better things.
Perhaps, the last eight years has caused the uncommitted voters, to stop and take a hard look at the country and themselves. The hard right MAGA crowd is what it is. But that crowd has caused a lot of introspection among the independents, and many of them are becoming more liberal in their views.

I like Harris / Walz personally. But I gotta say, Secretary Pete is amazing! He is possibly the smartest person in the entire administration, he is a fantastic communicator, he's easy to listen to and very genuine and believable. His problem, of course, is that he alienates a significant portion of the population that just cannot accept, let alone embrace gay marriage. That's the hard fact. Americans tend to elect celebrities because they want an image of a person that fits with their egos. Substance very often takes 2nd place, and in a presidential election that's the end of the road.
