- Does Leon still have what it takes to become Galar's Champion? A lot has changed since he did his initial gym challenge, like Nessa becoming a gym leader, and a the 3 new Rivals we have. So I played through Pokemon Shield as Leon, matching him steam, and trying to better understand his journey if he had to do it all over again to reclaim his title.

Hop: "Kinda solid all around, but switches out good Pokemon for bad ones in a struggle to constantly improve. Early-game struggle is entirely dependent on starter; Grookey is the best for him, because the other two put him at a major disadvantage for Milo (Sobble) and Nessa (Scorbunny). For some reason only uses up to 5 Pokemon in the SEMIFINALS even when we KNOW he has more in reserve. Couldn't beat Leon without using common sense and utilizing a full team, especially the god-bird himself, Cramorant."
Marnie: "Morpeko got grumpy and refused to cooperate, passes up Pokemon on her routes quite frequently. Would get absolutely destroyed if she played Sword. Her early struggles are probably the reason Team Yell were working overtime to sabotage enemy trainers, to give her a chance to get into the swing of things. Overall, can get to the finals against Leon, but would have to change up her tactics to win. Could do it, but it'd be a toss-up."
Bede: "Ruined by absolutely everyone in the early-game. Milo, Nessa and Kabu all destroy him. Would need Oleana to legit buy his badges and carry him through the early game unless he was on that grind hard. Once he passes these three, though, it's smooth sailing. His late-game team is actually pretty strong, and both his Psychic and Fairy teams stand a chance at succeeding. Quite likely to beat Leon."
Raihan: "Having a surprisingly fast skyscraper dragon as a starter is a pretty excellent start, so R.I.P Milo. For ONCE Nessa isn't the roadblock she was for every other character. No, that honor goes to Bea. She's the game-over scenario for Raihan. But because Raihan can't have Thunder Punch on Vibrava yet, using that free slot on something else that's technically illegal seems fair. Or just play Shield. Either way, get past her and you can shoot straight up to Leon with few bumps along the road, where you hilariously lose due to being out-Dragon'd despite being the Dragon-type Gym Leader. Raihan has not one, but two battles which he has no shot at winning without changing up his team and movesets, as well as catching new Pokemon to bulk up his team. Sadly, couldn't beat Leon. Makes sense; it'd be a bit of a problem if he could just walk up to Leon and win at any point in the previous championship tournaments and just hadn't done it, because plot contrivances."
Leon: "Leon can, indeed, beat Leon. Leon does not lose to Leon. Ok no really, the only hitch in Leon's step throughout the Galar region is Nessa (always Nessa, every time, lord have mercy), and even if we're assuming the water-type gym leader from his gym challenge had the exact same team as her, the training that he canonically got throughout the Isle of Armor gives him the expertise to get past her. Even taking into account Leon's weaknesses, like his sense of direction stopping him from evolving Kubfu, or not being able to answer Opal's questions correctly, nothing stopped this mans. He's by far the most well-rounded, coverage-covering, useful-move-using trainer explored so far, and he has the team variability and bulk to back him up. The only thing that can stop him is Leon; and in a fight of Leon Vs Leon, only Leon can win."

Piers would be awesome (I have a soft spot for dark types, and it'd be cool to see how he does in comparison to Marnie), and if Nessa ends up being stonewalled by Nessa then we will know for sure that her ability to gatekeep the gym challenge is some divine right of hers. @@sunnysaturn5303 Not exactly. He beat Leon as Raihan by changing his movesets, orders, and by adding in a Milotic that Raihan has never used in-game. Vasko beat Leon, but being true to Raihan and his vanilla depiction would lead to a pretty surefire defeat.
Nessa run would definitely be interesting, especially when nessa has to fight nessa

One idea that these games unfortunately don't let you explore is the possibility that these characters didn't do the gyms in the given order.
Leon probably did, given he starts in the same place as the main character. But he does get lost and might've accidentally bypassed Nessa until later.
Someone like Marnie probably would've had a completely different path from the start.
This game's pretty explicit about the fact that the gyms have to be done in that order, since it's ordered from weakest to strongest. So Marnie had to start with Milo then go to Nessa like everyone else, unfortunately.
I would completely agree if this was any other pokemon game due to starting locations
But galar's league just so happens to be much more structured since it is a major sporting event. Kinda makes this the prime game to do this sort of run for everybody. ...meanwhile I'm following these guidelines to run Juan's team in Alpha Sapphire..... I have to solo the first 4 gyms with Horsea, because I cannot get corphish or barboach until I get surf and good rod... please press F when I get to Wattson...
Most of the gym leaders minus opal and one other I believe we're challengers alongside Leon so he didn't face them. Also remember Galar has many gyms some in the minor and some in major. So there's no telling what gyms he actually faced

i always figured that Leon's "real team" would be one without the starters since he picked the starter because of the player, kind of like Blue's team.

Oh wow, I actually didn't know about that new mechanic (they added in so many little hidden ones like that in this game) I'm defiantly gonna do that from now on. Suddenly a lot of Pokemon in my boxes became much much more viable.

for example rookidee can't teach corviknight roost but if you evolove it to corviknight then it can teach it the move

Leon's Inteleon does not have a priority move. Snipe Shot has no priority, however it has a high crit ratio. The lizard does have 20 points in base speed on Charizard, though.
I love the little detail of getting lost in the isle of armor to reach the towers.

One of Leon’s main obstacles is his terrible sense of direction. Guy always manages to get himself lost.

When Leon was doing the Gym Challenge at age 10 Sonia, Nessa, Raihan, Piers, Milo, Bea, Alastor, and Gordie were not Gym Leaders. Nessa and Milo are around the same age as each other and most likely became Gym Leaders around the same time as each other. Alastor most likely was just born since I believe he is listed as either 11 or 12 years old, Bea also would have been too young to have been a Gym Leader while Leon was on his challenge. Gordie also looks to be roughly the same age as Leon, Raihan, and Sonia. Raihan became Leon's rival while they were on the Gym Challenge together most likely after Sonia dropped out of the challenge and stopped being Leon's rival because she couldn't keep up with him. As for Piers he would have most likely taken over the Spikemuth Gym at a young age having to drop out of the gym challenge in order to take over his family's gym and care for Marnie since we do not see either of their parents, otherwise why would Piers have taken over as the gym leader if it wasn't either his mother or father's job previously and either one of both of them passed away without any warning. It could also be why Piers dislikes anything to do with Chairman Rose, maybe Rose knew what happened to Piers' parents or maybe Piers' mother passed away shortly after giving birth to Marnie leaving only Piers and his father to care for her. Then while Piers was on his gym challenge he gets a call from one of the residents of Spikemuth that his father has gone missing and has been declared dead which makes Piers return home to care for Marnie and take his father's place as gym leader. It's clearly shown from Piers' Rare League Card that he looked like he was around 10 to 13 years old when he became Gym Leader, or the picture used for his rare card is the same picture used from his gym challenge days before he was forced to become Spikemuth's gym leader. As for Gordie I believe that his mother was the 7th gym leader at the time while the Grass and Water gyms were run by someone other than Nessa and Milo. The Hammerlocke gym was also most likely ran by Raihan's predecessor and whoever ran the Stow-on-Side gym might have been related to either Bea or Alastor or if by some chance Alastor and Bea are related to each other might have been their aunt/uncle/or parent. Of course this is all just my theory but it fits what I believe is the natural timeline. Also as for Leon training on the Isle of Armor that could have been at any point, it makes the most sense to have happened after Leon became Champion because I doubt he would have gone there before his gym challenge began and I doubt he would have time to go there during the gym challenge most likely because he would have been too busy training his Pokemon for the challenge and travelling all of Galar. This is because the Gym Challenge has a time limit, it needs to if the Champion Cup is anything to go by. Big events and tournaments must be scheduled in advance at least by a month or more especially if it's going to be advertised and televised. I know in the games you can quite literally beat all 8 gym battles, do the main story, catch Eternatus, and complete the Champion Cup and beat Leon and become the new Champion all in one single day but I'd like to believe that a few days if not a few weeks pass by before the Champion Cup actually happens, maybe even 2 to 3 months of time pass in order for all the challengers to go through and either fail or complete it.
