- Society Finches range from all white to the most common dark brown/white pattern. They also come in light brown or "blond" color. Then there are the crested finches - I have 3 in this video. By the way, it is difficult to tell the sex of the Society Finch -- the only surefire way to know is if the bird starts to carry a tune... Only males can sing, while females chirp.
These are such cool finches...they sound like crickets!
I've rescued 2 of these type of finches from our aviaries at work. The first one died so I rescued the second one from the second cage. They were both being picked on by the zebra finches. I've read your supposed to keep them in pairs and I'd like to get a second one for her to have a friend. Your video got my finch singing along! Thanks for sharing!

I have two cages of finches (the exact same cages as you do :-) Whenever I play your video I get a stereo chorus of songs. After the video they keep going for at least fifteen minutes or more. Birds are awesome!

I have 2 bengalese finches with 2 zebra finches, How can you tell if the bengalese finches are male or female by looking at them? As im struggling to find out what i have.
It can be difficult unless they start to sing (carry a tune). Males will sing if there is a female present. Females are the ones who chirp. Have they started singing yet? Also, females can lay eggs with or without a male, so you might see who laid the eggs. Societies tend to foster other bird's eggs, so the one sitting on the eggs might not be "mom", and the males like to sit on eggs too.

I think they're about the same, except that finches can be more delicate. Parakeets have a longer life span too.

Yes, very much so. My society finches had many chicks, which I later sold at a local pet shop. Some of the birds in this video hatched at home.

Hi, I'm a student in Korea. I have some questions about breeding birds. I usually go out to school from 8am to 6pm. Is there a no problem with breedding 2 society finches? (I worried about that birds feel alone. )
Just make sure that you add clean water and food daily before leaving home. They actually prefer to be left alone when they have already laid their eggs, and especially when the chicks have hatched. They do not like to be disturbed around this time. It's a good idea to add a finch seed mix, millet spray, and cuttle bone. I also add one whole egg that was grinded up in a food chopper at least every other day. Some fruit (except avocado) and leafy greens (like romaine lettuce) is also a good choice, but does not have to be daily. Don't forget to add a nest for privacy.

In my experience, that is a yes. It is their courtship/mating call to grab the attention of females.
