    I got a cutting from one of these, I planted it in a mix with compost, gritty sand and soil. I planted it in shallow basket. I held it down on the soil with stones. I have got a lovely new shoots coming from some of the nodes.

    Just picked up my 1st hoya yesterday and it was an Australis.

    My Australis is the plain, thin leaved variety and I just love it. The thin leaves worried me because they're not chunky like my other hoyas, but it's really taking off and doesn't give me any trouble. The little devil has new leaves all over and no one is more surprised than I am. It's under a grow light in the evening, because it's winter and gets natural light exposure in my bird's room between eastern and western facing windows from dawn until dusk. I like it. The Aus and my Bella are the only thin leaved hoyas I have and they're not likely to be joined by any others. I like the chonky hoyas best.

    Ooh, I never knew we had native hoyas in Australia! I mean, I live in the far, far south, so it's not from where I am, but it's still cool!

    I just purchased my first Australis, so I found this video was helpful. I am watering it like all the other Hoyas, letting her dry out between waterings. I have her on a homemade indoor trellis I created. So far, so good.

    I have a 4" pot of this that I bought on clearance for $5 at a nursery last fall. On clearance because they'd had mealybugs 😣. The plants had been treated and looked clear. I kept it quarantined for a while, and repotted and inspected the roots. It's now with my other plants, and has a tiny new leaf growing from the end of a tendril that looked dead. Very exciting!!!!

    I put mine rather distant from the window by a breeze and it got finicky and threw its heavy leaves at me lol. I moved it DIRECTLY to the window East to shut it up and its thriving again and budding many new leaves that go from red to green- however its still looking rather thin sad and meh now. Skeleton vibes. How do I bush it up again? These ones have weird personalities.

    i live in the equator. made a terrible mistake of placing this by the windowsill receiving direct afternoon sun! most of its large leaves burnt and scorched. i'm now nursing it back to health.

    Interestingly, my australis and another hoya (which I can't recall the name is right now) weren't doing well in the potting mixes and hadn't done since I got them regardless of what I tried (all my others are though) they ended up losing all their leaves and since they were on the verge of dying completely anyway, I took them out of the potting mixes washed off their roots and repotted them straight into sphagnum moss as an experiment since I figured I had nothing to lose. That was six months ago and since then they've come back to life and exploded with growth. I just add a couple of drops of liquid fertilizer to the moss every couple of weeks and they're growing like crazy now. We're nearly at the end of our summer where I am (australia) so not sure how they'll do in the moss in the colder months but I'm just going to leave them and see how they do since they've done so well in it so far.

      Mass growers soil is usually peatier and less specialized than some smaller greenhouses (where I purchased mine). I usually propagate all my hoyas in the sphagnum and they love it!

    • @tasgardener7923
      @tasgardener7923 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickPileggiPlants I live in Tasmania and being an island I have to import rarer plants from the mainland because I can't get them here. It's right pain because of the strict biosecurity here and it's costly for me to get them through quarantine to be able import them. Depending on the type of plant I'm trying to import, there can be significant delays with them in quarantine and I find those that are sent which are not in peat have dried out when if they've been held up so if I don't get them barerooted, I usually request the grower actually put them in peat or something similar as I find they stay moist if they get held up in quarantine. I don't want to pay for a plant and then quarantine costs just to get a plant that's died during shipment. I will always repot if the plant isn't one suited to a very peaty mix over the long term but I do find it good when I have to import them to keep them moist enough they survive shipment from the mainland and the biosecurity checks. it certainly kept the hoyas I imported alive after a significant delay in quarantine.

    I have had amazing luck with the hoya species that are more succulent like, however the australis is throwing me for a loop. It has lost all of its leaves and I cannot get the foil to dry fast enoughI am using some general potting mix and about 50% perlite and it still is showing signs of too much water. I am going to try using a heat mat to dry it out a little faster but I have to say I think this is the most finicky hoya I have ever encountered. Would not recommend for a beginner.
