How to tell the difference between Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Princess', Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen', and Hoya australis 'Lisa'. These three variegated Hoya types are fairly common but there is some confusion regarding the difference in appearance. I'm here to clear that up! Enjoy.

I picked up the very first Hoya I noticed a couple of years ago when I started getting into house plants and it happened to be a Princess. lol I got excited and my brain was like: That's a Hoya. You're mine now. I took her not knowing what she was until I got home and looked it up. Now after following people on TH-cam and Instagram, I absolutely do not regret my purchase. She's so pretty. BUT, I have noticed that I really like the way the Queen looks.

      1. H. wayetii has black edges around the leaves. As for the flowers, the corolla is dark red and the corona is red. There are 30 flowers per umbel.
      2. H. kentiana does not have black leaf margins. As for the flowers, the corolla is red and the corona is red. There are 20 flowers per umbel. The leaves are 15 cm long, as opposed to H. wayetti whose leaves are only about 7 cm long.
      3. H. shepherdii does not have black leaf margins, like H. kentiana. The leaves are similar to that of H. kentiana in shape and length but they can become darker green. As for the flowers, they are completely different from H. wayetii or H. kentiana: the corolla is white/pale pink and the corona is white with a red center. There are 15 flowers per umbel.

Pretty sure I have the Hoya carnosa rubra, but it also has the regular hoya carnosa leaves. Is it normal to have the same plant putting out two different leaf types at the same time? I just saw a peduncle for the first time after a year of owning it. I heard you can’t really know what it is until it blooms. Is that true?

Yeah a lot of times a new vine looks like a peduncle. Give it time and keep giving it the same care, if it's a peduncle you're in luck. 😀

Thank you, Betsy for this informative video! In the USA a popular online seller is offering a Hoya called Hoya Exotica. Is the Hoya “exotica” the same as Hoya rubra? To me they look the same, but I’m a new Hoya Head. I have H. rubra, H. Tricolor, and H. Australa but still looking for H. Australa Lisa. Don’t know the difference between H. Wayetii, shepherdii and Kentiana....Could you tell us? Showing sIde by side plants in your videos very helpful.....

I found my Hoya australis at a garden center in Paris, it was about 1/3 the size. Hoya australis 'Lisa' I bought from Replant.nl.

Beautiful hoyas! Lisas name is actually Hoya australis ssp tenuipes 'Lisa'. Like the most common Hoya australis real name is Hoya australis ssp tenuipes.
That's because there is many more Hoya australis, ex, Hoya australis ssp australis.

I was just talking to Christian @CrazyPlantGuy about this because I just recently got an Exotica and a Rubra and they are so similar I wanted to know the difference. I honestly had no idea that the Rubra was actually the Krimson Princess were the same. So the Exotica is just another Cultivar of the Carnosa right? Goya's are my favorite and I'm trying to learn all I can. Thanks for this video!
