- I. Allegro moderato 00:00-10:30
II. Scherzo: Vivace 10:30-16:30
III. Andante 16:30-31:15
IV. Rondo-Finale 31:15-41:30
Performed by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Leonid Grin, with Pia Freund (soprano), Lilli Paasikivi (mezzo) and Laura Nykänen (contralto).
Purposeful, positive, celebratory, majestic music. A powerful kind of pastoralism underlies the lovely third movement which features some haunting vocalisation. I can imagine this symphony being very appealing to listeners who are discovering Melartin for the first time.
Melodic leap to the seventh... defining Swedish gesture? Great stuff.
