- In this video we’re looking at how to recover and where to recover to.
This area of the game is often neglected and it’s a pretty quick fix, if you’re not already doing this. So, it’s a great way to improve your game and your dominance in the points, without having to commit to a significant amount of training.
In the video I’m demonstrating these topics of Recovery:
- What’s best for you
- Recovering from angles and distances
- Recovering from spin
I hope you enjoy this one and find it useful too 😁

As a former elite player I appreciate the attention to details. Most points are won on 3 and 4. The setup is for that is probably the most important. Recovery is key.
lets goo i needed this thank u craig
Yours is the best, serious instruction I've found. I'm a doubles club player, and would be interested in serving strategies and return options for a doubles player - right court to left court. Thanks in advance.
Now I know why I can't always recover my serve, because my position is always the same. I just found out about this tip. Thank you very much
I love this channel.
You, Sir, are the best explainer and demonstrator. Watching your videos have helped me very much! Thank you.
Thank you Craig. Perhaps a video about playing against long pips would be interesting.
Regards from Lima.
I’ll add it to the list
This is so scientific and yet so simple to understand!! My gratitude Craig for creating this video!🙏
My pleasure!
Great tips Craig. Love your videos. Can you please bring something around converting a short boring chop game into topspin.
Love these targeted videos! Please keep making great, focused tutorials like this!
Thanks! Will do!
This I like. I would appreciate if you can make a video on how to return the serves effectively.
Absolutely brilliant. I often forget (neglect) the basics. Thank you very much.
Great. Thank you. A video on the back hand play is requested.
so detailed and well described .. thank you
I needed this vid so much but never found anyone else adressing this. Thanks so much for a very informative vid and keep them coming!
Every tutorial is extremely helpful. Thank you.
Thank was struggling with this aspect of the game. Often caught off guard when the return took steep angles. Thanks so much again😊🎉
thanks for those tips... its very useful 👍👍👍
Another really helpful video. I can speak from personal experience that having 1-2-1 coaching from Craig rapidly improves one’s serving ability. He has a fantastic understanding of the game and obviously he’s known as the serve guy for good reason but knowing what to do after is invaluable so this video is just what I needed. Craig, any thoughts on serving in doubles? Doubles play greatly reduces one’s options for placement so what do you find works best? I hope I try to serve a ball that gets my partners strength into play for the return but not everyone likes doubles or understands the tactics.
Thanks very much Simon, really appreciated. I'll have a think about doubles, see if it's something I could incorporate into a video at some point.
THIS! I also struggle a lot with doubles: I miss my serves (as a right handed player) way too often, when I have to serve diagonally from the forehand side.
Additionally I have no clue about the correct footwork and where to go when in doubles. It's really confusing a lot of times.
Thanks, Craig, for all your wonderful tips
Thank you! I'd like to see how to set up for a 3rd ball and 5th ball attack please.
I'll add it to the list
Great lessons to master. I'm still working on this.
Thx ❤
Thank you
Thanks, great video!
That's fantastic, Craig. I'm bigger and love your videos thanks
Really helpful advice once again, great Video Craig👏🏼 your ability to teach and explain crucial concepts in an easy and comprehensive way is amazing! Thank you!
U got that right. He's very good at this.
One of the most helpful tutorials I ever watched.... It helped me a lot to get a better understanding of the game and to start something like "tactics" in my game! Thank you very much. All the best from Germany, Rob
Very kind of you to say so, thank you 🤩
Interesting, I knew that you have to adapt your serve to the opponent's type of game, i.e. confuse him and move him from his preferred attack position, but I never thought that a forehand (backhand) player has a habit to return the serve in a specific area. 👀💪
That was the video that helped me up my service game significantly just by watching it. Tried it, worked, just brilliant.
For me personally, this is incredibly helpful, as my game is basically only service plus 3rd ball attack. Could you make a video on how to deal with these "obscure"/"unlikely" returns? For example, I have a player that is asking constantly for my advice on how to deal with my returns, but I can't give any other than: "... yeah, I don't know... just be prepared for it, I guess?". Turns out that A) I'm a terrible coach, and B) it seems like chop blocking long, fast and short topspin serves is NOT the usual move, players tend to go for - at least at my level (~1420). I also see players struggle a lot when it comes to short returns that go opposite to their imparted sidespin. Can you make a video covering those kinds of returns? I would imagine a fair few more players struggling with these kinds of returns
Thanks, for all your work.
Really like the channel, provides understanding what’s actually happening which enables me to spread the word to the youth players during practice. Greetings from 🇩🇪
Thank you very much ✌️
Production quality of your videos have really stepped up. Nice 😊.
Thank you…hopefully each one will be better and better 🤞
Tack!
Thank you 💪💪💪
Great pointers, Thanks Craig!
Thank you 💪
the best, please have more similar content on game tactics, thanks!
You've given me an idea for this, thanks. I'll see what I can do.
Very good
Great tips.. thanks to the guy who serves tt 😊
Thanks!
Thank you very much 😊
Big fan sir..❤
Thanks awesome. For new content, I’m lefty, and i d like to see tactics for serving against right hand player. Thank you for all your videos, you are a good teacher.
My pleasure!
¡Gracias! Greetings from Mexico! Excellent tips!
Thank you so much ☺️
How to get consistent couter rally during match
Awesome....just on my way to some matches here in Ottawa....great tips
Good luck!
A beginner in tt...Love your videos!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks
You’re a star ⭐️ thanks so much 😁
9:30 - when as a left hander I serve sidespin to a RH wide short FH expecting it to come back to my BH and they hit an around the net to the near side 😂 catches me almost every time. If someone does that once I tend to avoid serving so wide
Great video man! Can u try in one of your videos go in depth in table tennis tactics? like after serving in play, how to see enemys weak side, etc.
Thanks for the idea!
Hey Craig, would u mind showing us how to produce a quality kick serve w/o the jab grip, instead with a reverse pendulum grip?
I have first seen you years ago on Tom Lodziaks video and was stunned of your services :)
I'm happy you decided to run your own YT Channel - I love your content, keep up the great work!
It’s on my list to do but I plan to build up to that, so. I will get there but hoping to build my subs up first 👍
Absolutely fantastic. No one has covered this topic so far in such clear way
Hi Craig do u have any tips on quickly changing the grip from the pinch serving grip to the shakehand grip for playing? I usually struggle with that and most of the time I have to use my other hand immediately to help change the grip without me accidentally dropping the racket 😅
Important to try and find a service grip that allows you to change back to your playing grip. Rather than picking a grip and then learning to change. Does that make sense?
man i love if u make a video analyzing serve game of ma long or xu xin but i don't know about copyrights situation
Interesting concept. I’ll look into it.
Thanks, Craig, great video. When I serve normal sidespin pendulum to the left of my opponent, I usually receive a semi-long ball with sidespin (both right or left spin) at my left wide backhand side. This return should be attacked by myself with a backhand flip or topspin, but I tend to make a lot of mistakes when I try to attack this way, and when I just push to my opponent I receive a fast topspin attack and the point is over. Any suggestion for dealing with this receive? Thanks a lot. Marco from Italy.
It's hard to give specific advice without seeing the issue but making sure you're not making contact to the left of your body (try to get your body behind the shot). Try to deal with the side spin return by altering your aim down the line, try to avoid dealing with the spin by opening your wrist too much, it can sometimes make things more complex. Hope that helps.
@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy Thanks a lot for your help. I'll try!
@zenzero27771 Are you left-handed? I'm asking bc you said your pendulum serve is going to the opponents left. If so, I may have some advice for you
Hi, no I am right-handed@@theblackdow980
Really good video thank you. That long and fast tip is a flaw in my game I never realised I had! Do you have any tips on making faults in serves? I make so many I have a reputation in my team for choking when making serves... I think it is lack of consistency + stress and rushing. I do try to avoid it but the more I try the worse it seems to get.
I end up doing things like:
Forehand backspin > swing and miss ball completely, ball goes under the table, or ball bounces too close to the net and hits the net.
Please do you have any tips?
Very common, normally caused my overthinking (or worrying about missing). Focus on the process e.g. where you want it to go
@MattCM88
I was just practicing that serve today and struggled with the exact problems you describe. I experimented with taking one half step more away from the table and was amazed how my % went way up instead of putting balls into the net or under the table.
❤❤❤
Sir,
What is your go-to racket combination? (the blade and the rubbers)
Rossi Emotion PBO-c with Dynaryz AGR
I struggle so much with backspin serves, wherever its on my forehand or backhand I try to get that fine brush underneath the ball I just completely miss the ball the majority of the time. I don't know how to improve actually been able to contact the ball with underspin.
Very hard to know what's happening without seeing it. I coach online / virtually. If you're interested in some help in the new year, send me an email: coachcraigtt@gmail.com
solid tips, mostly basic but nice with the anticipation
one key-part that is missing is the drifting direction of side-spin serves when they come back to you and you wanna 3rd ball attack thou
people wonder why ma-long is making the pendulum when he wants to attack with his forehand and think that the spin would not be ideal for it since the oponent tends to play it into his backhand corner but the important factor is the drift of the ball: when the pendulum serve is returned the ball drifts to your right side making it easy for a forehand attack unlike the reverse pendulum or backhand serve which drifts to your left side and right into your elbow when u wanna forhand attack and this can make you fail your 3rd ball forehand topspin if ur not careful and not stepping around enough leaving enough room
this is why a pendulum is good for forehand 3rd ball attack and a reverse/bh/hook is suited better for a backhand attack (thats why u see darko jorgic use mostly backhand serves)
Well now I can't use all these tips , can I? All my opponents must also have watched this video by now and would be expecting all this from me!! 😂 Dayyyyummmm
🤣😂 whoops!
Thanks!
Thank you so much. Your contribution is appreciated massively 😊
Thanks
Thank you so much 👍
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your contribution, too kind 😊
@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy Not at all Craig. I immediately felt that you took notice of my request and took time to help out. It’s my way of expressing my gratitude and saying thanks. Thank you Craig for your help.
