To those that worry about the pixel 7 battery life. Let me tell you what my day looks like.
I take my phone out of the charge at 7am starting at 100%.
I'd use my phone pretty much constantly up until literally 9am when I enter the office. It'll be pretty much youtube videos and music or talking on the phone.
I'll only use my phone sporadically until 1pm. Briefly check news, articles, twitter etc. 1-2pm I'll be on the phone the entire time during my lunch. Then 2-4 again sporadic use. Around 4 or 4:30pm I'll leave the office. I'll be on the phone or watching TH-cam videos the entire time up until I get home 1 hour later.
As I am writing this the time is 4:50pm and I'm on my way home. My phone is on 49% percent.
By the time I get home around 5:30pm, I'll probably be on anything between 42-45% percent. Lowest it'll be 40%.
So from 7am to 5:30pm with about 4 hours of constant heavy use and sporadic use throughout the day and I'll be home with 40% charge. Around 9pm I'll need to plug it in depending on how much I use it.
Can you get phones with better battery life in 2023, for sure. Will it affect your life? No. Charging speeds are far more important and it's the only issue I have with this phone. (Pixel 7 pro)
Just a quick note. My brightness is always maxed out, all stuff is on (NFC, Bluetooth, data etc) and screen resolution at the max 1440p.

Thank you for making a long-term review, it's so much more useful to a consumer than a "I played with this for a few days when it was brand new" review. And also, as someone whose top priorities in a phone are a good camera and solid battery life, this is a conundrum!

Owned a Pixel 7 Pro and agreed with most of Sam's point. Battery life could be better, but the latest update has improved my battery experience by quite a good amount. My biggest gripe with this phone is the performance, a lot of times when I open an app through the notifications their loading time is crazy long that I have to close it and open the app directly to solve it. Not sure if it only happens to my unit but yeah that's what I'm experiencing. I just wish they have gone with the Snapdragon route, but alas - it will drive the cost up.

The reason is most likely because Google's tensor chips are made by Samsung, which is the same company that makes those crappy exynos chips. Just imagine the capabilities if tensor chips were as powerful as apple's a bionic chips.

@@yourdailytoilet5962 I wonder, when Snapdragon made some burning hot chips (808,810, and I believe 820 and 821 too), Samsung made a good decision to make their own Exynos chips for S6 and S7 (cmiiw, I forgot which models). Those chips were better than the Snapdragon's ones. I don't know why it became worse than its competitor now, or even worse, it was not even acceptable for a flagship chip. So what was going wrong here?

  • @ManzaEN
    @ManzaEN ปีที่แล้ว +65

I was recently daily driving my S23 Ultra and Fold4 but I decided to switch one of them up and go back to the Pixel 7 Pro. I have to say, I absolutely agree with you. I've forgotten how much nicer the image processing is. Especially 5X telephoto when treating it for close up shots with natural bokeh; with its optics looking much more visually pleasing than the S23 Ultra's 10X bokeh. Yes, call me crazy with my obsession with using the telephoto lenses but the Pixel 7 Pro has the best telephoto focal length in my opinion - which it reminds me of why I was disappointed when I switched from the Note20 Ultra to the S22 Ultra.
I also much prefer the Pixel 7 Pro's implementation of its maximum brightness as Samsung boosts the saturation on their display to push higher perceived brightness. It's software handling of HDR content is also superior. Like iOS, it only plays HDR content within the content window.
Combined with its software (and haptic implementation), I can't wait to see where the Tensor G3 will take us with the upcoming Pixel 8 Pro. For now till September/October, the Pixel 7 Pro and S23 Ultra will remain in my pockets.
    Fantastic review as always.

Pixel HDR playback idea is great but main issue with Pixel 7 Pro for me is, HDR processing is bad and everything looks odd. I loved Pixel 6 Pro HDR content playback, though I wished display was brighter. Now Pix 7 Pro display is really bright but somehow they have messed up HDR content playback. Recently I play some tv series on Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and Z Fold4. And Pixel 7 Pro colors looked weird. That's why I don't love Pixel 7 Pro as much as I did to Pixel 6 Pro. Also in hand feel of 6 Pro was better. But Fingerprint sensor is faster way faster on 7 Pro. Network works great and internet speeds WiFi is way better than even S23 Ultra. As connection speed of 7 Pro is 2400 while S23 Ultra shows 1200.
I always admired iPhone HDR processing and my second favorite was Pixel phones. and Samsung phones had always something missing and with S23 Ultra they have a bug where screen brightness flickers but processing is very good. Xiaomi 12 Pro HDR had brown tint in videos.
Point is I care way too much for HDR streaming. Pixel 7 Pro messed that up for me.

With root my Pixel 6 is basically perfect, I'd imagine a Pixel 7 or 7 pro would be the same. I can make the notification shade translucent with Project Themer, I can change the icons on the stock launcher and replace the search bar or at a glance (not both!) with pixel launcher mod, I can remove the ugly border from the lock screen fingerprint sensor with AOSP mod, I can hide the nav bar, increase the volume steps, change the material you colour with repainter, etc. These are all things that SHOULD be in stock android, but root being able to do it is a comprimise I'll accept for now lol.

Got the 7 Pro myself and got me the S23 Ultra this week...long story short the Samsung is going back today. I don't get how people can justify the price increase over the pixel. The Samsung might be better in benchmarks and battery life, but that's it. Pixel feels much better in daily use and the camera gets you a great picture and is awesome for just taking it out of your pocket and shoot. S23 takes way too much tinkering to get decent pictures.

The most popular TH-camrs don't care to make long term reviews but for someone who's trying to understand which phone to buy for daily usage, it's the long term reviews that are helpful because every phone is great in its first week. What matters the most is how the phone is ageing with time and successive updates, is the manufacturer actually improving the user experience with successive updates or they're casual about it, these are things that matter. I've noticed with my 6 Pro that it is very situational and app dependant on the battery life. It still does get me to the end of the day most of the time but it is rather inconsistent. Sometimes it'll make it with 40-50% remaining and 3-4 hours screen time and other times the same amount of screen time makes it down to 20%.

I have to agree with this video on all counts except I don't have enough information on the battery life yet. The 7 Pro is what the 6 Pro should have been. And yes, I like it better than the S23 Ultra. And my wife does too. She even mentioned that her relatively new S23 Ultra battery kept drarining by the end of the day for unknown reasons. I've described Pixel phones in general as phones that get out of my way and I don't have to think about them. They aren't status symbols. They're tools I can count on and get on with my life.

I just bought the P7P obsedian or whatever it's called. Those who are planning on buying, here is your boost of confidence:
The curved screen is as always gorgeous. The QHD+ panel and curved edges are sign of premium quality.
The speaker quality itself is mind blowing like my mom uses s22U and she was like "Are you playing the song on your bluetooth speakers?" 😉 when I was using the p7p.
The ToF sensor is incredible. The AF performance, even in 4k60 is way better than s22u or even s23u. It's so accurate, it feels magical. Still iPhone pro series models are unbeatable in af performance.
The sustained gaming performance is close to 14 Pro.
Oh and damn isn't the haptic experience out of this world... Like I used to iphones had the industry leading taptic engine but Google is yet again magical. You'll have to use it for a day or two to appreciate it.
Also the AI specific live captions and the live translate alongside other exclusive features are ahead of any generic apple or Samsung.
    For buggy and cheap part:
Idk maybe because the phone is a day old or something but yes, the phone heats up like crazy. And the stereo setup is unbalanced. And yes the portrait alongside portrait videos suck compared to Apple. And the battery is very underwhelming, again maybe because it's a day old.

I love the Pixel 7 Pro camera, but I'm not happy with the way Google is going about not being able to fix the many issues. There's a green screen flickering issue that starts happening after a month of owning the phone, it starts with freezing and restarting 5 to 8 times a day. Sometimes the phone shuts down and doesn't turn on and the only way to turn it back on is by holding down volume up and power buttons for 25 seconds. The latest firmware update broke the phone and Google refuses to fix it. This is my last Pixel line phone i will ever buy, I'm going Samsung next..

Not to mention the heat, especially with android auto. When my 4th came I sent it to samsung for trade in to an s23 little one, I like the size better honestly. My take is that the Pixel 7Pro is not for intensive gaming, so you can look elsewhere if you play Genshin regularly. It is the best value global phone. Currently, £650 for 128GB in the UK with a £125 voucher and One's 10% store credit. Top 5 camera makes it one of the best for point-and-shoot.
For the casual user, its lower-performing Tensor2 chip is hardly noticeable. Battery life has improved for me. It has no problem getting through a busy day, but two-dayer for everyday use.

I got myself the 7 Pro and I tell u what. It is the best smartphone I ever had.
How people think this phone is big is beyond me. It is actually a decent size phone and I can scroll with one hand.
The interface is colourful and the phone is buttery when it comes to scrolling and pinching.
I will admit the camera is a mixed bag. The camera takes great photos & I love the magic eraser. However telephoto while decent isn't exactly 100% good as the Ultra. For example if you want to take photos from a distance via 30 X unfortunately the result is blurry and slightly pixeleted (no pun intended). Telephoto is better on video but no by much.
The real issue is battery life as it won't last all day sadly.
Otherwise this phone is just brilliant. Highly recommend it.

I'm waiting for a good iPhone trade-in deal and just decided to watch a pixel 7 pro review (as a refresher) just before the pixel 8 pro comes out. Unless Google performs a miracle, the pixel 8 pro, like every other pixel, will not sway me. A permanent search bar drives me up the wall. I've actually been using an S23 Ultra for about a month now as an upgrade from the S20 Ultra. It was only $550 with trade-in. But I am not impressed by anything, neither the smoothness, the performance, camera, nor battery life. Other than the macro ultrawide, the camera is near identical to the S20 Ultra, meaning it's still disappointing, slow, and super crunchy. Also, the battery life is only slightly better than the S20 Ultra that has been used for 3 years straight. If the S23 Ultra is supposed to be the king of battery life on Android, then only the even longer running iPhone can satisfy me. A SoT of 10 hours on near minimum brightness until the battery dies, is not enough. I don't actually use it that long, but I want the peace of mind of being able to work the phone hard all day and still have a good 30% leftover as backup. No pixel phone can even achieve half that reliably from what I can gather. And speaking of smoothness, I don't know why people are so obsessed with launcher smoothness and ignore everything else. Android itself is a clusterf@ck at this point. It's a second class citizen, especially in an Apple dominated US. Many apps are just pure garbage on Android. Who cares about UI smoothness when the moment I jump back into Chrome, it starts stuttering or freezes? Uber crashing, food apps hanging on startup, all sorts of issues that ruin any semblance of smoothness or seamlessness. Not to mention I don't like the cartoony Google UI at all. Even Google Assistant likes to hang, take ten years to answer, or screw up and not display text properly, meaning I have to force close it frequently to reset it. These are all issues carried over from my old Samsung, the most irritating being Google made apps, in which a brand new top of the line most powerful Android phone available can't fix. Even the default Google Messages is FILLED with bugs, from not attaching fies properly, deleting your text if a scheduled message is sent, not showing screenshots, and even screwing up notifications. I doubt getting a Pixel with fix any of these issues. The same Google apps. The same Android. Really been using Android for a decade now and I am just so tired of being the "rebel" and refusing to get an iPhone. All the advantages Android phones, and Samsung, had initially are gone. Big OLED screens, great battery life (remember the dinky 4" iPhones with pathetic battery life?), far lower price, far better and more cameras, so many more features, etc. All these things have been eclipsed by the iPhone for quite a number of years now while the iPhone still retaining the fluidity and reliability it has always been known for and especially the app ecosystem which has always been in another league compared to the pedestrian Android. As the maker of Android, maker of the pixel phone, and designer of its own chips, Google should have been in a perfect position to use its expertise and the vertical integration afforded by the pixel to make something truly great that rivals or beats the iPhone. But alas we are disappointed every single year. Rumor has it the Pixel 8 Pro will be just another minor spec bump. Not that Google can suddenly change all the inherent problems of Android overnight either...

I am just not satisfied with this phone. DEFINITELY should have researched this more. I hated the curved screen on the Samsung and hate it here. Pixel pro gets hot when I am doing absolutely nothing with it so you know it's eating battery power for God knows what. I've been on Samsung phones for about a decade now so Pixel is hard to get used to for me. I personally think that the s23 cameras are better and I am not trading it in but I am continuing to use the pixel 7 pro hoping that their future phones get better because I want to be fully immersed in the Google system for my future media publishing.

Soon as you step outside, bright, sunny, summer day, 30+ C°, and you wanna capture your kid playing, well, things go south. It overheats in the matter of 5 mins... Than you wanna go a a weekend getaway, to a place you haven't been before- you pop in your car, and start using any gps app, and it will work, for around 10min, before starting to overheat. So, yeah, smooth experience if you are nothing but a light user, wasting time on social garbage apps.
