Transport for Wales Class 153: Stood the test of time? (TRIP REPORT)

- Hello!
On this evening I travelled from Shrewsbury to Crewe, two stations which see regular fast service. A gap in that service meant I had to use the stopper and lo and behold, a 35-year-old Class 153 made its appearance. This was my first time on this line with one of those units, being more accustomed to the modern Class 158 and 175 fleets. But is the Class 153 still good as a regional train despite it's age ?

About 9 years ago, I had to travel on business to Plas Newydd House & Gardens Langollen. Changing at Chirk, I'd board a rather run-down two-car diesel train. On the return journey, after around 50 minutes late, the train limped in to Ruabon or Chirk station. The engine was defective, said the guard, hence I missed my connection at Chester, and had to travel to Crew and change again, making it a long day! Glad it sounds like they've got rid of those trains, whatever class they were.
These are rather old too but are very reliable thankfully
Nice to see you at my hometown station Ben - I’ve been on this route many times and yes, the fast train takes about half-an-hour these days which is not bad at all really up to Crewe. Incidentally, those usb sockets are a strange one really. I’ve had working ones that do odd things to your phone - I think it’s something to do with the voltage (a bit worrying tbh). Overall though, most of the TfW refurbs are pretty smart imo. Cheers.
Ah yes, I know what you mean with the USB ports - I’ve had a similar experience on GWR IETs… If TfW ones could work already that’d be a start, I guess!😁
Yeah the journey really is quite fast and enjoyable but at this time of the evening there didn’t seem to be any fast trains before that slow one. Not a big deal, it’s nice to go the slow way sometimes!
Glad you enjoyed Mark and thank you for your comments.☺️
I love all your videos.
Thank you!☺️
@@trainlagged you're welcome but you want to visit mine and it will give you some motivation
great video and ride. haha you had 153329 when you went to fishguard so you had the same 153
Ahhh... could explain the socket issue - I may have been on this unit every time I've been on a refurbished 153??
@@trainlagged on the tables on 153s they only have sockets where there is tables
Great video Ben. I see why you wanted my photo now. Thank you for the credit. Shrewsbury to Crewe is a nice line to do. Nice scenery along the way and pass the DRS depot as well. Was this last year when you filmed it?
Filmed in April 2021! Glad you enjoyed :)
I probably would think that ScotRail or East Midlands Railway should have the extra Class 153s and the Class 170s cascaded to East Midlands Railway. With the Class 175 Coradias to be cascaded to Great Western Railway or South Western Railway.
I would certainly love to see the more modern 158 and 175 units to see more use. The 153s most likely will be scrapped I assume
