GE Washer Agitator Removal - How to do it and access the GE Washer Hub and More

  • Today, we had to replace a GE Washer agitator which meant that we had to take it out, which isn't easy to do on these newer-style washers. No one else has (seemingly) done a video, so I thought we'd do that when we got the new GE Washer Auger from Appliance Parts Pros.
All you need to do a GE Agitator Repair is a screwdriver, and the new agitator itself. The big problem with this is that you MUST remove the agitator if you want to do anything involving the GE Washer Hub, or a GE Washer Tub, or GE Wash Plate - the screw keeping everything in place is hidden under the agitator which is a major problem.
This video only involves the agitator / auger itself, not the hub. However, those are almost self-explanitory, and the big issue is what's shown in the video. I hope this helps you with your GE washer, as it was a real pain to figure this one out, as all newer style GE's have this issue which isn't really discussed much how to solve.

Thanks Ben for the video! A correction though, you said towards the beginning of the video to turn it counter-clockwise to remove it, that is incorrect, you need to turn it clockwise(to the right). Also, make sure you have a good sized screwdriver for the hole, the closer to the diameter of the hole the better, a small screwdriver will be too loose. One more thing, if you need to do this by yourself, after you get the screwdriver in, use two hands and grip the bottom of the agitator, spread out your elbows to contact the sides of the drum to act as brakes, then twist the agitator to the right while still holding the drum with your elbows. That worked for me, I did loose some arm hair from the friction, but it worked. I hope this information is helpful to someone!

Ben, you are the MAN! This is exactly the right instruction video, at the right time to undo what my domestic goddess managed to do. Somehow the curtain she washed wrapped itself partially under the agitator. Removing the agitator is the only way that will allow me to remove the aforementioned curtain with minimal damage. Thanks.

Thanks Ben, for the video! Sending a tip for anyone having trouble with this process. I could not poke my screwdriver through the auger/agitator. So, I got out my drill and drilled through the auger. I still didn't have enough leverage so I then drilled through the exact opposite side of the auger, using the inserted screwdriver as a guide to find the opposite side. Once the holes were drilled on both sides, I was able to shove my screwdriver completely through the auger. Then, I held the drum secure and whacked the screwdriver clockwise with a hammer and the dang auger finally twisted off! I hope this helps others!

Why do companies make it so damn hard to fix what would seem to be simple parts? Bad engineering? Trying to protect service people's jobs? It's pathetic. Great video!!! If it wasn't for people like you posting help we would be washing our clothes in a bucket!

    • @rick6893

You said it, "Trying to protect service people's jobs?". Companies rely on us buying their expensive parts and having their repair technicians replace them. Most op to purchasing a new machine. These companies are criminals taking advantage of the little guy...

Very, very helpful. For what it's worth, I think you may need to actually push the screwdriver through the inner wall of the agitator. When I removed mine, it looked like I had pierced it; it didn't look like there was a pre-existing hole that the screwdriver poked through. I may be wrong, but it was definitely hard to get the screwdriver to sink into the agitator wall and when I got the agitator removed, the inner side of the hole wasn't clean--it looked like I had jammed a screwdriver through the plastic! Nevertheless, this worked like a charm--I was able to remove the base plate to get to a piece of jewelry that had fallen beneath it. I just have an agitator with a tiny hole in it, which doesn't seem to impact the washer's functionality. Thanks very much for the video!

Fantastic video. This was driving me nuts trying to figure out. Thank you so much. I'm sure if GE tried they could have made getting the agitator out even more difficult than it is. What a stupid design this was. Hey GE --Just copy the older Whirlpool Direct Drive machines. I liked the comments below too. I have the identical machine to the one in your video which really helps because GE made this task so completely different over the years for their various machines.

If you're unable to get the agitator off by hand I used vice grip 27ZR chain grips at the bottom of the agitator to compress it while turning, worked great - alternate solution from doing it a 2nd time, brace the bottom of the tub with your feet, no special tools required (why didn't I think of that the first time!)

If the screw driver method doesn’t work for you, use a strap wrench!
This was the ONLY way I was able to remove the agitator. ($12 at Home Depot or Walmart)
I’m a 120lb lady with no plumbing experience and I was easily able to do this without a second set of hands.
Once off, you’ll need a 7/16” socket wrench to remove the lower agitator plate if necessary for your repair.

works as long as the agitator isn't seized on. I just did 2 and had to use the multi tool and sledge hammer and cut and break them off. IMHO, the biggest problem is just awful documentation by the tech community. Whirlpools at least have so many techs working on them its easy to spot problems. Not nearly as many videos about GEs, even though they really aren't that bad other than this agitator. Im like the only guy on YT that has semi-decent videos on them, whereas WP are dime a dozen now.

I followed this procedure with my five year old GTW460, lining up the dimple and the hole, punching the screwdriver through the inner plastic behind the hole and twisting the auger clockwise. That was the easy part. I was never able to get the auger off the base. The base was free wheeling or spinning freely, independent of the tub. So holding the tub was no help since the auger base spins freely, independent of the tub. I just couldn't get enough hands in there to hold the base while twisting the auger clockwise. I tried getting a screwdriver to pry up under the lower edge of the auger, but couldn't get it to budge that way either. After about 4-5 hours I gave up, with my back, shoulders, hips, and entire torso aching. I considered trying to climb up and put my feet down in the tub to hold the agitator base while twisting the auger, but at my age (78 years), I was afraid i'd not be able climb back out. That was two days ago and I'm still having problems with my back and neck, and walking without pain. I also read in some other forums that my problem is possibly the transmission. I couldn't find any reference discussing the tub spinning properly and the agitator base not locked to the tub. Calling a repairman would run $200-$300 or more, if it's only the auger and base. So, I've given up and ordered a new washing machine to replace my five year old GE machine.

I had to laugh when you mentioned climbing in and holding it with your feet! I just attempted the same and almost fell out on my head. Can just imagine calling my wife to help me from hanging off the edge off a broke down washer.
I am just starting my adventure with this process. I have read of guys cutting the whole thing off and buying a new agitator. Hope it doesn't come to that...but it might.
Glad I'm not the only one.
Ps. I'm 65 so getting too old for this stuff too. But if you did it, I can't give up.
      Wish me luck!

Do you know how to get to the insides of this washing machine? It does not have a front PANEL but instead wraps around to the back.

You need to take the top control panel off. Remove the metal panel on the back of control tower. There are 2 more screws at the base of the plastic panel, once those are removed, inside you will see 2 more downward screws toward the back of the panel, take those out and you can then pry the top off.
