      The binding spoiled me. I'm trying out another A5 planner this year, and the binding, despite the book being very similarly priced, was sadly underwhelming.

    2024 will be my third year in a Hobonichi (original A6). Love it so much! I do watercolor art journaling, keep track of appointments and To-do lists. Tomoe River paper is amazing! If you paint on it, keep in mind that the paper expands and crinkles a bit after it dries, so by the end of the year your book will be a bit thicker, but it’s very satisfying to flip through those crinkled pages to see everything you’ve done during the year.

    • @ThatJournalingGuy
      @ThatJournalingGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wasnt the biggest fan of the crinkled pages at first if im being honest. But as my planner got chunkier and chunkier, I just saw it as a sign of a well loved and well used planner. I dont mind it at all now.
      Have you always used the Original A6 size or have your used other options before?

    New subscriber here! I'm in my 4th year of the Hobonichi A6 and I agree with all of your points! The way I started out was by getting the planner half way through 2019 (January start is cheaper at the mid-year point) and a cheap cover/ cover on cover off of Etsy and I was away. I loved it so much that I decided to go all out for the next year and have remained in my Shaun Tan cover for 3 years now ❤
    Loved the video, I am so so happy I found your channel.

  • @taccora
    @taccora 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Hobonichi is amazing if it suits your needs. When I first discovered them in 2018, I got the A6 and it was amazing. As I got busier I needed more space, but the cousin was too much and I didn't like the dated pages because sometimes I need more than one page a day. Because of that I had a very functional bullet journal in a B6 Slim for many years.
    Fast forward to Sterling Ink releasing the common planner and I found my happy place. A B6 is the perfect size for me and the blank (numbered) pages in the back serve as my reading journal for this year, but will serve the space for my work notes for next year and I'll put an index in the back so I can find things quickly.

    I’ve been using the Hobonichi Cousin Avec (splits the year in two volumes) for years, and I love it. I write, paint, draw, and collage in it. I own four or five covers and loads of accessories because I went nuts with it. This year, I’m going to try another Japanese planner, the Nolty, because I got it in my The Stationery Selection subscription box. It’s supposedly hard to get outside of Japan. The paper looks like Tomoe, and it has similar sections. It comes in a plain black leather-ish cover. I’m kind of blue about not getting a Hobo, but this is already here, and it feels wasteful not to use it. I may have Hobonichi withdrawal!

    • @ThatJournalingGuy
      @ThatJournalingGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I just looked up the Notly and it's been around for a while! Looks like theyre layout is very similar so i dont think your withdrawal will be TOO bad haha. Let me know how it works out for you the next few months! I want to make a video about planners that could "replace" your hobonichi and this seems like it could make the list.

    Agree on the Midori, Hobonichi & Traveler's trifecta of costs. I recently got into this world, and stuck with an olive TN, and a Hobonichi A6 in plain Navy. The former was bought @ Scriptus, while the latter was on discount during an anniversary sale at a local stationary store. To curb on costs, I am going to create my custom planners to go into each book, wish me luck.

    • @ThatJournalingGuy
      @ThatJournalingGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All of these planning systems ALONE are expensive, bringing them all together? Dont even want to talk about how much the cost could get into. Please let me know how the custom planner making goes! Wishing you the best of luck!

    I am a journaler from wayyy back, 2024 will be my first year w the Hobinichi Hon Cousin.. looking forward to living a very creative planner life next year. Super excited! Omg, Midori paper is lovely too… I weighed the price, heavily first.. only got a pencil board w it.. I’m using a Galen leather A5 10 pen zipper case for it.. fits well. There are also beautiful covers of all sizes on Etsy. GREAT VID!!!

      @@ThatJournalingGuy to be honest I'm a bit on the fence b/c like you had mentioned in another video, I'm at the Archer & Olive phase of things with high GSM paper, so while I'm curious 🤔 I'm hesitant to try something especially at this price point, in case I decide it's not for me..
      Choices 🤦‍♀️!

    I use composition notebooks to journal but I think the European ones differ from US ones. I like grid A5 format with 96 pages, may be also around 60 pages so I can switch it around within a month or two. It's more fun this way and I'm not limited by dates. Regarding paper I love how smooth it is with fountain pens. But I'm using Take a Note with 68gsm and that paper seems like heaven to me. Zero showthrough, no bleeding, so smooth and a bit thicker so feels better in hand.

  • @lennoxraynewood2741

    I love the hobonichi and seeing everyone’s filled in pages on TH-cam but I don’t own one myself and don’t think I ever could bring myself to spend the $100 they cost in my country when it means switching to a size that’s three inches smaller then what I pay only $50 for. I have spent my whole life using composition notebooks then the stalogy that’s the same size for the last five years along with 9x12 sketchbooks so to switch to A5 which is the size of a folded piece of binder paper feels very cramped to me and I don’t know how anyone can contain their whole year on pages so small.

  • @JosephDickson
    @JosephDickson 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I may try the Original A6 and keep it in the office; after spending $100 on a Traveler’s Notebook, inserts, various other notebooks this year, I’m still exploring. As far as hobbies and vices go, stationery is one of the better ones.

    • @ThatJournalingGuy
      @ThatJournalingGuy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      haha ill have to agree, stationery is definitely one of the better ones. Definitely recommend an Original A6 for some casual use or if you just want to give hobonichi a try. Not as expensive but the same amazing paper you could expect in the bigger sizes. Used it as a personal journal in 2023 and Im thinking about doing it again!
