Mine does type better though - I am literally faster at editing a document because function layers let me quickly select and delete an entire word (FN + J = Ctrl+Shift+Left) and functions like page up and down are also quickly accessible without moving my wrists. Less finger fatigue than typing on membrane keyboards as well.
We think so much about what we need, that we sometimes forget it's ok to try something new. I'm typing this on a 40 percent with lubed roselios switches, xda keycaps and a custom wood case my dad helped me make. I wouldn't have discovered this passion without you Taeha, thank you.
We should think much more about what we need, because outside this comfy aesthetic youtube space were currently using up more resources than our planet has and killing people in the process because people impulse buy things they'll barely use. Don't ever let anybody tell you you *need* something you lived fine without yesterday. Not ads, not him.
In other fields, the tools people use are considered important enough that when people can, they make sure to get the best version of it. If you were a carpenter for a living or even just a hobbyist, you'd make sure to have good quality tools when possible. Those tools usually last longer than cheaper ones, maybe have some extra functions that cheap ones don't have, or they just have better quality of life things for the user that make them more enjoyable to use. Somehow a great majority of people have failed to apply the same thought process to their keyboards they use day in day out. There are plenty of people out there who type all day and still just use their laptop keyboard or a cheap rubber dome. Some people would drops 1000s on a custom gaming PC and even getting into the details of having the right coloured cables for their case etc, then when it comes to the keyboard they would settle for whatever is the cheapest RGB mech on Amazon and call it a day. As Nathan said you can still input data with those cheaper keyboard options, but they are not in the same realm when it comes to enjoyment to use. Also I'd argue that these keyboards CAN make you a better typist. I got myself a split layout keyboard and it actually improved my typing abilities as it helped me train out some bad habits I had when typing, which made me a faster typer. Additionally because a keyboard is nicer to use and feels more comfortable (especially now I can have a heavier weight switch to match my heavy typing style) I feel better typing at greater speeds for longer as my fingers become less fatigued so it has in a way helped with productivity. Also with a nice solid alu case with foam inside and lubed switches, the keyboard sounds nice to type on and is now a lot less offensive to the people around me too. Before I would type on a big echoy plastic keyboard that with every keypress it would echo through the house. This hobby also opened me up to other hobbies too as I learned to solder so I can build a custom mech, now I use those soldering skills in other parts of my life and other hobbies too. In fact thanks to that skill I even fixed a control unit for an expensive kitchen appliance at home that would have cost a lot to replace or have someone come out to fix but I was able to fix it with my ability to solder.
@@MagnapinnaArchive Hi, I'm just getting into the hobby myself, but these are just my 2 cents. While I understand the price point argument, I can't say I can agree with you about the reliability of mechs. Mechanical switches are objectively better than membranes in terms of reliability. They're rated for at least 50 million actuations. These switches are expected to last you at least a decade, even a lifetime for a lot of use cases. I for one, have encountered multiple instances where a membrane or scissor switch keyboard has failed me, so you really can't say that your experience is evidence since they're just anecdotal. When I discovered their existence, I thought "huh. they're more expensive but they last a lot longer and I get the 'feels' as a bonus." I've been using a mech for about two years now (still all stock, looking into modding and making it better), and I can say that it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. But hey, you do you, man. If you think a similarly priced membrane is better, then go use that. No harm in that. But I'm not even sure if there are membranes as expensive as mechs since when they sell for around as much as a decent mech, their sales would likely bomb, correct me if I'm wrong.

What Taeha is saying is so true. I got a mechanical keyboard for the first time at the beginning of summer. For the first time ever I actually had the motivation I needed to learn how to touch type. I had tried before many times but always quit. Today, I have been learning to touch type for almost 3 months. I used to type 50-60 wpm. I went down to 28 wpm. I've been using a Corsair K70 MK2 SE for about two years now. I love it so much. A keyboard is a peripheral that you interact with the digital world. It is a very important piece of hardware in our present times.
This was not only about Mechanical Keyboards. This was just relaxing for me and a lesson to love what we can do every day and to enjoy life a little more. Thank you!
Your explanation as to why you use a high end camera and therefore why you use a mechanical keyboard is such a great breakdown for why we invest in anything that might be perceived as "overkill" or "unnecessarily expensive" for our hobbies and interests. Using gear that you are excited about, or a tool that inspires your passion and in turn directly contributes to the overall quality of your work or end result is justification enough. Just hearing that explained so succinctly just really made me happy and I say that the proof is in your product and process. Really great videos. Liked and subscribed. Can't wait to see more, Man!
The truth: these 3 months since I got into mechanical keyboard, I purchased 8 keyboards, sold 2, returned 2, broke 1, and kept 3 for now. The time I was used to study and do constructive things now become times I research on keyboards, watch people building them, got torn between endless choices on which switch/keycap/cable to buy, and f**king typing practice websites. I just hope my obsession can end soon and get back to normal. In fact I even type faster on membrane keyboard.
Ogk 2017 LOL same! Just purchased the boneyard and the space bars, the MoDo2 and the novelties AND mats. My little corner is getting filled with keyboard related items lmao. I ain’t finished yet though. Currently waiting for the Think 6.5v2, the bento, and see if I can grab a set of Olivias. Oh man. 😅
I've literally used the same exact Filico Majestouch-2 with Blue switches for over 8 years straight now, and I spend over 6 hours a day on average on my computer, I just finally was forced to replace my keycaps but the board is still going strong. 100% worth the investment and has brought me a ton of joy.
Very well written and said. I am just getting into the mechanical keyboard scene. While I've explored several channels so far to whet my appetite for the experience of buying or creating my own, I feel that your video communicates the soul of the community in a friendly and accessible way. Thanks for this intro.
Actually the production quality - sound, lighting picture of this vid is as good as anything I’ve seen. Your camera was definitely worth it. The overall production quality impeccable.
this might have been the most expensive video I ever watched on TH-cam considering the money spent on custom mechanical keyboard parts in the last few weeks alone. That said, it has become a great hobby and I there is no going back to stock keyboards once you realise how much you can improve the experience. I have always been keen to use great keyboards. But my first very own 60% makes me want to even answer my work emails. As a German who wants to stick to ISO-DE for now, it is quite hard to find keycaps - but this has become part of the fun. Thanks Taeha, seriously.
Hi Taeha, you inspired me to bring this community to my country (Brazil), which has nothing in this world except the conventional mechanical keyboards from stores (Razer, logitech, hyperx), which are very good, but really lacking the differential of being able to offer an exclusive, unique, personalized product that can please only those who assembled it. I am currently doing market research and contacting these specialized stores so that I can bring this market here. I really appreciate your work, dedication and the quality of the content you offer on the channel. Strong hug.
I needed this. Im fed up with explaining my outsider friends why i need a custom keyboard for 300€. Thanks Taeha. Also this video makes me even more hyped for the NK65 drop. I cant wait to build :P
I just finished my first custom build two weeks ago (60% with arrows and 2.25 LShift, Creams, KBDfans 5deg case, brass plate, Razer PBT keycaps). This is the first time in months that I feel motivated to work every single day, and enjoy every second of it. The feel, the sound, the looks of my keyboard invite me to type something, anything, every day. I spend every moment of the day thinking about anything I can go type up, just to hear the perfectly smooth and thocky spacebar over and over again. If you want motivation to work - a custom keyboard is a very easy way to get tons of it.
Actually, I agree with Taeha. After I built my own custom keyboard, I always find something that I could do so that I could use my keyboard. I would always feel hyped up when I got to use my keyboard and once I use it, it's hard for me to stop. Ended up me finishing all the works early.
Anybody who gets into this hobby should do themselves a favor and learn how to touch type. It's fun to improve at a useful skill and you're getting the most out of your hobby that you just dumped a lot of money on! I really don't get these other TH-camrs who have spent thousands of hours building keebs and making videos but won't take a few hours out of the week to learn how to type properly. Taeha was the first mech kb TH-camr I saw and I expected similar levels of enthusiasm and polish from other TH-camrs but 90% of them type like they're newbies to this hobby. It's baffling and to be honest, it's lazy. I seriously just stop watching if they don't know how to type. I know that might sound elitist but if we're looking towards some of these TH-camrs for guidance on keyboards and to be a leader in this hobby but they can't be bothered with learning how to perform the ONE skill and that is unique to the hobby then they deserve some flak.
100% agree with you on "gear" and inspiration. Feeling confident and 'proud' of whatever tool or device you're using is important. A lot of times, the extra money spent only goes towards a "quality of life" aspect. Something that doesn't actually change function, but makes how you EXPERIENCE that function more engaging and positive.
i just started with my little gk61 ....then i saw taeha and his videos.... 1 week later i was lubing my switches, changed keycaps and bandaid modding my stabs and boooyyy i truly feel and hear the difference !! i know i will never be able to buy me this expansive 2k keýboards but its ok for me cause u can have a nice one only by watching and learning from taeha... im verryy thankfull for that ! Greets from germany!
Thank you for the fantastic content. Your channel has opened my eyes to the possibilities of a tool I used to take for granted. I use top notch tool for my trade and fine cookware to make my meals. I've found that tactile interfaces enhance the quality of my life. My keyboards are now part of that world. Keep up the great work. So, about my typing skills . . . lol
It's like this wity every enthousiast hobby. You can buy a watch for 10 bucks at Wallmart, or you can spend 10k on a Rolex. They both tell the time, but it's something different
Just discovered your channel subscribed! I've been looking into getting one for work but I want to use it with my laptop but it's so daunting there's so many options I'm not sure where to begin. Ty for your content!
Making more info-based videos like this is a great idea, it's easier to digest than a full 2hr+ stream video and more interesting than a typing test. I'll def be tuning into the next videos
I love that you're doing a series to help newcomers get into the scene. 1 thing I really struggle with as a newcomer is that everything is out of stock at the point of purchase. It requires a strong mental focus on what I want but out-of-stock vs. what I don't really want but in-stock. I also find it demands a lot of patience, when your favorite keycap set may take ~1 year to reach you.
“Curating their desk setups”. It’s very true. After I built my first custom keeb, I’ve been much happier while working throughout the day. This has helped to make me more productive as well. That aside, the keyboard and phone are our main vehicles to communicate with the outside world. In a way, it’s like an extension of ourselves. It makes sense to find and build something that is tailor made to truly fit YOU.
I’ve been searching for something in ISO-DE (QWERTZ) Layout for months now. Everything is either permanently sold out or WAY over my budget. Edit: I’m searching for a TKL-Version as well, which doesn’t make things easier 😅
Hopefully this will convince my parents to let me get a higher-end keyboard EDIT: I have to convince my parents to use my own money for the keyboard, and I am probably only going to spend around 500-600 dollars on it, so even then it wouldn't be the most luxurious one.
if you are refering razer/corsair/logitech keyboards as higher end keyboard,no. That's not what this video is about, that's just like the scratch of the surface(like he said in the video),there's more to a mechanical keyboard than those gaming keyboards that i just mentioned. There are much more to a mech keyboard like custom case, custom keycaps, types of switches (not just the cherry mx ones, for example kailh, topre, holy pandas, tangerines) etc.
i love the quality on everything you do, it's always a pleasure to watch the videos and the streams, it feels like a unique experience even though its something that im always doing. keep up with the great work and thank for your vids and streams
I'm excited about this series. I've followed you for years and have always been excited and interested into building my own custom mechanical keyboard but have also been hesitant for various reasons because it can be so overwhelming. Currently sitting on several sites waiting for products to become available and for me to dive into the world of customs. Thanks for all that you do.

I just hope my obsession can end soon and get back to normal. In fact I even type faster on membrane keyboard.
I’m going to show this video to my girlfriend now to justify my recent addiction for mechanical keyboards
Great, maybe she'll get addicted too
@@mathish.3190 thanks for the laugh
Same bro... It’ll help justify the 300 bucks I’ve already spent and I’m still not quite done...

The key to lubing is that less is more
Very well written and said.
I am just getting into the mechanical keyboard scene. While I've explored several channels so far to whet my appetite for the experience of buying or creating my own, I feel that your video communicates the soul of the community in a friendly and accessible way. Thanks for this intro.
When I first built my keyboard, I remember actually enjoying typing out my final essay.
Actually the production quality - sound, lighting picture of this vid is as good as anything I’ve seen. Your camera was definitely worth it. The overall production quality impeccable.
"cya nerds" just reminds me of Voyboy on Curse and how that was the good ol days.
this might have been the most expensive video I ever watched on TH-cam considering the money spent on custom mechanical keyboard parts in the last few weeks alone.
When he said, "See ya Nerds!" I felt that
Hi Taeha, you inspired me to bring this community to my country (Brazil), which has nothing in this world except the conventional mechanical keyboards from stores (Razer, logitech, hyperx), which are very good, but really lacking the differential of being able to offer an exclusive, unique, personalized product that can please only those who assembled it.
I cant wait to build :P
if you've been telling your friends that you *need* it, no wonder they ask for an explanation ;)
Yeah, "need" was a poor choice of words lol. Nobody needs a $400 keyboard
Yep, no one "needs" a 300£ keyboard unless you actually have a problem. You WANT a 300£ keyboard
I think your friends might really wanna know why you need another one. And another one. And another one.
Guys i apolagize my first language is not english
I just finished my first custom build two weeks ago (60% with arrows and 2.25 LShift, Creams, KBDfans 5deg case, brass plate, Razer PBT keycaps). This is the first time in months that I feel motivated to work every single day, and enjoy every second of it. The feel, the sound, the looks of my keyboard invite me to type something, anything, every day. I spend every moment of the day thinking about anything I can go type up, just to hear the perfectly smooth and thocky spacebar over and over again.
If you want motivation to work - a custom keyboard is a very easy way to get tons of it.
Nathan: shoots his video on a cinema camera
TH-cam bitrate: imma end this man's whole career
"Why Mechanical Keyboards?"
Me after using up months worth of salary for keebs: HMMMM INTERESTING
i just started with my little gk61 ....then i saw taeha and his videos....
Can we just take a minute to appreciate how soothing the background music matches his voice lol
So, about my typing skills . . . lol
Ah yes, tips and tricks about diving into the pit of poorness. I love it.
content creators like yourself help shed light on the community of custom mechanical keyboards. which makes me happy.

This video literally got me to order my first mech keeb a month ago.. Taeha the goat
I'm gonna send this video to my mom to justify my spending habits.
Thanks for the video Nathan :)
She's either gonna use it as proof that you're crazy, or she'll get sucked into it and want to build her own keyboard. Which is more likely?
great video taeha! I showed this to my parents and they finally understood why I like mechs so much:)
3:53 not even joking i want my keyboard to sound like im smashing my head agianst a f*** ton of clicky switches
Hmmmm... BOX Navy then? Or a horrible amalgamation of all sorts of clicky switches, click jacket and clickbar on the same board?

Making more info-based videos like this is a great idea, it's easier to digest than a full 2hr+ stream video and more interesting than a typing test. I'll def be tuning into the next videos
To the person reading this I hope you become successful one day and have an amazing day I wish you the best and nothing but the best❤️❤️❤️

I gotta be honest, I love your intro music so much. It literally warms up my ears
I want to start building keyboards but every single frickin part I want or need is always out of stock or costs hundreds of dollars. Arghh
"Why mechanical keyboards? Why not?" Well said sir, well said.....
"You can find keycaps and keyboards with all kinds of different colour schemes and designs"
*Cries in ISO-UK*
Lol, ive got a azerty layout, and I've found something like 5 different keycap sets.
I’ve been searching for something in ISO-DE (QWERTZ) Layout for months now. Everything is either permanently sold out or WAY over my budget.
Edit: I’m searching for a TKL-Version as well, which doesn’t make things easier 😅
*Cries in ISO-NO*
Sobbing in ISO-DE too
Love the TH-cam videos man, I like the change of pace.
Great work, great words!

I'm so excited for this series! I have been wanting to start the dive and got started with your channel. It all comes full circle!
cant wait to bring my ducky one 2 mini blue switches rainbow keycaps into college and annoy half the room
Omfg u cant be like this!!!! Haha my parents are sooo annoyed by me using even a membrane-mechanical one
I 100% agree with this. I got into keyboards during this quarantine and to be honest it’s such a joy to begin typing and starting work.
Hopefully this will convince my parents to let me get a higher-end keyboard
EDIT: I have to convince my parents to use my own money for the keyboard, and I am probably only going to spend around 500-600 dollars on it, so even then it wouldn't be the most luxurious one.
Praying for you... :P
your money or parents money ?
@@bruh1k63 if it was his money he wouldn't need to convince them
@@rnozz97 i would have to lol
if you are refering razer/corsair/logitech keyboards as higher end keyboard,no.
"affordable"
on what planet?
This was so eloquent and well thought out, love it.
I like the intro and all, but I think it'd be cool if you did a real life version with you in it instead of an animation

Could u do a video of your top 10 mechanical keyboard ...or your favourite ..Give it a like if u wanna see it
My keyboard for sure helped me type better. Front print means you can't look at the keys as easy and now I can touch type faster than anyone I know. It's great!
Finally, a video to justify my expensive addict- Hobby.
I'm just starting to get into mechanical keyboards after using cheap keyboards for many years, and finally buying a good mechanical. Now I'm starting to part together my first build. Thanks for such a great channel, it's been very helpful.
He showed my logitech k120
lol
I got my first mechanical keyboard about 4 days ago. It has been inspiring me to type & in general making me happy when i go to use it. My old keyboard never made me happy... I was unaware that it was even possible for a keyboard to make me smile.
Fourth. I really like that most keyboard enthusiast loves coffee as I always do :)
Well, that was a relaxing way to start the morning. Could not agree more Nathan! Thanks for the post and looking forward to seeing more in the future.
