Where I live in North Idaho the maximum high is in the 20's, average low is in the single digits to the teens. The thing I really love about Idaho weather is that it's almost always different. Have had days where we've had warm sunshine, rain, sleet, hail, and snow. The coldest we've had is -40F. No matter the temperature, a warm hat and jacket and you can go out in any weather. You get used to it, so much so that 30 degrees is T-shirt weather...
As someone living on the eastern slope of the cascades in central Wa a lot of this applies to us out here too. Here’s the best things I’ve found to get through a long winter #1 is to prepare, mostly financially but also having emergency rations and alternative way to heat your home. Having extra money and being ahead on everything will relieve a ton of added stress and give you options to go somewhere warmer which is my second tip. #2 go somewhere warmer even if it’s just for a long weekend or 5 days. Sometimes going on a vacation to somewhere with more sun in February can really get your through the rest of the winter. #3 find activities you can enjoy outside, skiing (downhill or cross country) snow shoing, even just going for a walk whenever you can helps. #4 exercise. Simple as that, very effective for fighting off seasonal depression. #5 make it a point to visit friends and family. Take this time while things are slow to go visit family you don’t see often of have a friend over for dinner.
Excellent advice! We lost power for 3 days when we first moved here and had no way to heat our home. It was ROUGH. I put in a transfer switch and a generator after that and, of course, haven't lost power since! LOL
CDA resident here, lot of good points here and I agree with you that the climate of Coeur d'Alene is relatively mild compared with other mountain towns, the Tahoe comparison is a little of apples and oranges, I'm assuming you are referencing snow totals in one of the Tahoe ski areas or Donner Pass? The areas where people live around Tahoe like Truckee or Incline Village get more of an average of 150-200 inches of snow a year which is still considerably more than we get in town. A good comparison to Donner Summit for the CDA area would be Lookout Pass
Thanks for the comment. Nope, that was in Tahoe City last year, right on the edge of the lake. Info came from a friend who just moved up here from there.
That 60’ was a very heavy year. Definitely not the norm. You also should be looking at relative elevation CDA is around 2500’ where Tahoe city is around 6000’.
Another helpful video! About winter in N. Idaho, It's all relative. I'm from Buffalo. Winters are a bit rough here for sure but not nearly as some other places like Buffalo for example. I guess if you grew up in Southern CA, it might seem pretty extreme here.
Wait me, too. I lived on the border of Hamburg and Orchard Park by the stadium. @@northidahoexperienceAlso, depends on where upstate. Cheektowaga is way less snowy than the southtowns. There are other parts of upstate NY not that snowy.
Which year? We don't have bad winters (usually) compared to the Upper Midwest or Northeast. It can be downright mild some years. It turns on a dime though due to the jetstream above us creating havoc and crossing over the mountains and bringing polar air down. I've had snowball fights on the 4th of July at just 4000 ft above sea level with freshly fallen snow. I've worn shorts in mid-February. If there's one thing that's unique about the weather here it's really the unpredictability.
Can you do a video about becoming a new homeowner and new homeowner responsibilities with the house? Basics we should have on hand( lawn mower, snow stuff), Winterizing, etc? Hope that makes sense!
I live in CDA and this is what I think about the winter. We usually only get two weeks a year that I consider really cold weather. The cold is no big deal to me. What I dislike about the winter is the lack of sunshine and the gray skies.
We do get cold on occasion. This last winter here in Oldtown, we had some cold days in the -20s and hit -31F on one day. Wasn't a big deal for us. I just kept the woodstove cranked.
3 to 4 feet of snow is not that much? I went to high school in north Idaho in the early 2000’s. There was knee deep snow for at least 4 months of the year. And I remember two weeks where the daytime high temp didn’t get above 15. It happens every few years at least.
@@northidahoexperience yea I live on the east coast now and the winters are pretty bad, but three feet in Boston is rare, maybe if your in buffalo New York it’s pretty common.
We definitely need 4wd here in north idaho, i would not want to drive without it, we have so many dirt roads you wouldn't be able to make it to the plowed street without it in the snow
Why so many California law enforcement retirees in North Idaho? Why are so many California realtors selling Idaho properties? The prices are way too high. I guess they want only rich people living here.
If you believe in freedom then you believe that Americans have the RIGHT to live in whatever state that they want. I’ve lived in 8 states, so am I from the state I was born in? The last state I lived? Or just pick one in the middle?- if that’s the case then I’m from Alaska.

moved here 9/2/23 from Central Cali, where it reaches 30-ish in the winter but doesn't snow, but lots of miserable fog. Yes, it's been a relatively mild winter, but I got the right clothing, snow tires, and it's been just amazing!! 28 degrees here is not even the same as 50 degrees in the wet central valley fog! I've driven Instacart all winter through neighborhoods that didn't really plow...my little Soul with FWD and snow tires has made it through snow, slush, and ice just fine. I do hate that a lot of folks blame stuff on "stupid California drivers" and tell us to go back where we came from. I agree - 99% of CA drivers are stupid, but I'm not one of them. I love North Idaho, I love the snow, I love the slower pace, the friendly people, the wide open outdoors...I'm totally home here!! Working on getting that Subaru, haha.
