    It needs to be pointed out that all four members of 10CC had amazing voices, incredible musicianship, were intelligent composers, and had innovative engineering skills. I would argue that they are the most underrated band of all time.

    • @TheSmithDorian
      @TheSmithDorian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Absolutely ... and on top of that they were brilliant 'live' musicians. A lot of their stuff was so slick, well produced and full of textures, harmonies that it would not have been a surprise if the live versions sounded inferior to the studio stuff. But they were absolute;ly tight as a live band.
      I saw a comment a few weeks ago that said they were great - perhaps not quite in the league of 'Queen but still great. But at the time they were definitely rated alongside Queen and at times even higher. They've become underrated over the last 20 years - among the heaving masses anyway.
      You're right about the qualities of all 4 guys. I think it was Graham during an interview a while back that said they were one of the few, if not the only, band where every member could write/compose, play, sing and engineer/produce album quality tracks completely on their own without assistance if required

      +Composer28 Indeed... And yet their first hit was "I'm A Neanderthal Man", a piece of bubble-gum banality that makes "Frere Jacques" sound like a work of art.

    • @toomuchinformation
      @toomuchinformation 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NoneOfYour Beeswax But the band that recorded Neanderthal Man was without Graham Gouldman. It needed all four of them to make it work.
      In any case Neanderthal Man was a song that arose out of one of Kevin Godley's lengthy drumming sessions, used for Eric Stewart to test the capabilities of their new recording studio. Lol creme started playing to accompany Kevin Godley.
      Jonathan King heard this jam session and said that it was a hit. So they tinkered with it and released it.
      You could call it an accidental hit.

      Dumfries Spearhead Saw them live a fortnight ago , only Gouldman left now but still a great gig . They played the whole of 'Sheet music' 1st half then the hits 2nd half .

    It was mind-blowing when it came out in 1975 and reached number 1 in the UK charts. Now, 45 years later, it isn't 'dated' at all. Now we understand its complexities, and what the lads went through to produce it, it is really one of the greatest pieces of popular music ever produced.
    A big shout out too for 10CC's I'm Mandy, Fly Me. Another piece of musical genius from 1976.

    From David A.Wood: Hello again, fellow TH-camrs! David from Kettering, Ohio is back here. I first happily heard "I'm Not In Love," or at least bits of it, on a local AM radio station in Dayton, Ohio, WING, when I was a teenager, probably while I was in the middle of High School during the late 1970s. The intriguingly subtle "I'm Not In Love" was one of the first non-R&B songs to which I earnestly paid rapt attention. Later on, when I first fully heard the song as a High School Senior while watching the rather chessy, yet compelling 1979 film, "The Stud" on Cable TV during one very late night in April 1982, I found "I'm Not In Love" to be a seductively captivating and also an emotionally compelling song. With that favorable opinion still to this day firmly planted in my mind, it is no wonder that the restrainedly elegant "I'm Not In Love" is 10cc's signature song. 10cc's signature song was, and still is, one of my favorite Love Songs. Having proudly stated how "I'm Not In Love" made me sentimentally feel, I will be perfectly frank by further saying that 10cc's seductively captivating song still instinctively makes me emotionally swoon in a fantasist's fashion everytime I fortunately hear it! Finally, I enjoyed the documentary on 10cc's signature song and their career. Please do keep up the good work. Goodbye for now and have yourselves a really nice day (Sunday, January 21, 2024), everybody. Peace Out! ☮️

      Why? Hardly any of it is electronic music. I used to think that the lush sound of this track was created with synthesizers. I'm amazed to learn that it is all vocal tracks and the only keyboard to be found are a piano, a Fender Rhodes and the Moog synth kick drum sound.

    I was a small kid in '75, living in England where my father was stationed in the Air Force. My parents were really into music and even had a pioneer Quadraphonic stereo system. I spent many hours listening to tape recorded music and albums. Would often get current "Top of the Pops" LP albums, and this became a favorite song of mine.... It brings back a flood of memories every time I hear it.

    Analog masterworks of sonic excellence. When I was a kid this song always sounded like the way music is in dream.
    It was ethereal , now I know why.
    Not to compare the two , but the strings in the background of bjorks come to me , reminds me of those ethereal songs from the past. It's those subtle otherworldly effects that you just cant place , that moves my spirit the most. 10cc then , 16 horsepower now , I can see the genius in both.

    "Big Boys Don't Cry"...I'm so astounded by this I'm actually reduced to tears. These men obviously cared a lot about what they were doing and trying to accomplish to put that much time and effort into this recording. Groundbreaking. No other record sounded like it at the time. Always captivated me as a kid. Got angry when on "American Top 40" it got stuck at #2 for 3 weeks behind Van McCoy's "The Hustle", The Eagles' "One Of These Nights" and The Bee Gees' "Jive Talkin'"- 3 DIFFERENT SONGS!!!

    Used to play this song live with my band TNT in Harrisburg PA circa '75-76. Our drummer sang it live (coming out from behind his drumkit) and we used a pre-recorded kick drum track and played it back on a small cassette player. I loved watching the video about how 10CC made it at Strawberry Studios. A truly astonishing production from the guys who also brought you the oddball classic Neanderthal Man.

But this song is where Eric's engineering expertise and musical talent really shine, (he is a phenomenal guitar player; seen him play live many times). Ever since I've had some semblance of knowledge about recording and music making technology (which is going on at least 15 years now). This song has always driven me NUTS whenever it was played on the radio because the same thought ran through my head over and over ,and that thought is this: "Wait a minute!...this was recorded in 1975....that pre-dates any 'sampling' technology!..HOW THE HELL did they do this?!!?" Well, with this vid I finally know. Thank you so much for uploading it!!

    I absolutely love this song. It is one of my deepest favorites. When I was young and the radio was on if this came on I would run from wherever I was at to hear it and turn it up to be surrounded by it.

    What's interesting is that the "chorusing" of the 16 voices per note today would ordinarily be done with a "chorus" or "harmonizer" effect of some kind. But they recorded each voice individually, which is why each note sounds so organic. Even today, there's actually still no easy way to create the same kind of sound without actually recording each note over and over. Duplicate voices sound like...well...duplicates. In this case, it is quite literally a wall of vocal nuances that digital effects could never reproduce effectively.

      Yes, but today, pop stars today don´t just harmonizer to have multiple layers and harmony´s on the vocals. Even today, each note is recorded. If you check out for example Katy Perry´s sessions, there you can see that there are a lot of tracks used for the vocals, that applies probably with Beyonce and many other pop artist´s.

      Actually I take that back, today they would probably use a harmoniser, since we are talking about 256 voices.
