They actually worked together on another show prior to Seinfeld.

Im not sure of the dates, but im pretty sure this came out after a woman sued mc d's for coffee that was too hot/defective lid in the mid 90's. The real story sounded so absurd it made headlines and people thought it was purely a cash grab.
Actually, it was an elderly woman who dumped a whole cup on her crotch going through a drive through. It burned a lot of skin and she needed skin grafts iirc. She just sued to cover legitimate medical costs. I remember seeing pictures of the burns online, it was way worse than you'd think. Elderly skin can damage much easier, it looked like she was in a car accident or something.

To add onto the story you posted: she was in the passenger seat of the parked car while her son went to get sugar and cream. She popped up the lid and the coffee spilled onto her. Later on when, she wanted to get the money to cover the bills, McDonald's threw a fit and just gave her 800 dollars.
Also, turns out there were past lawsuits about the hot coffee.
Actually, people didn't think it was a just a money grab until mc Donald's put people on the streets chanting "coffee is hot ssuesy is no" 5:13 suesy was the name of the elderly woman.

Well I was actually in a burn ward for a fire and had 3 skin grafts. Anyway the most common injuries I saw there in the waiting rooms were people burning themselves on cups of noodles and hot drinks no joke.

I have no idea how any of these actors managed to stay in character while filming the scenes. And the writers room must have been a thing to behold.
On "Seinfeld" the person who had the idea for an episode was responsible for that episode (according to videos showing behind-the-scenes), it wasn't the dynamic of a normal writer's room.
You people take these actor's talents for granted: they are professionals. Yes, sometimes they could break but, for example, whenever Jerry Stiller broke or forgot his line, he was apologetic to the person he was acting with because he was a professional. Other guest actors also got it together quickly and tried again.

Jackie Chiles character was loosely based on O.J. Simpson's lawyer Johnnie Cochran. The actor Phil Morris knew Cochran because they went to the same barber shop. Cochran was not amused by this portrayal, and asked Phil Morris to knock it off. Seinfeld writers didn't.

There's actual truth to the real lawsuit that inspired this episode. It's the McDonald's Hot Coffee lawsuit, in which the old woman opened the coffee in her passenger seat of the parked car her son was driving. She got some horrific burns and wanted to get money to cover her hospital bills.
Legal Eagle has a great video going over the lawsuit and others like it.
Just to add on, it was discovered that McDonald's intentionally made their coffee unreasonably hot so that customers wouldn't sit in the restaurant and clog up space
No matter how long you boil it ; water does not get above 212° -- the ideal temp for coffee
Amazing how people boil water for coffee at home ; but expect it to be cold when they order it at a restaurant

Jackie is such a funny take of ambulance chasing lawyers. It's not even that much of an exaggeration. They'll take anything for money. Including idiots like Kramer. There's a local advertisement for a lawyer constantly on TV here. His ad is basically "let's just sue, and I'll make them pay"... There really are Jackie Chiles lawyers out there.
