Good technique, but I would also remove the dust cover while doing that, it could get damaged in the proces. Actually you always should remove the dust Jacket before opening à fat book (reading it or just flipping trough).
People in the amazon reviews for these omnibus graphic novels always complain that their spine is breaking. I bought a new omnibus that should be coming tomorow, thanks for the advice.
They don't know how to handle over sized books. They act like they can just flip it open right away or read it with one hand and then complain about the size.
I kinda love you right now ;) Just finshed reading ans after i closed a beautiful Batman HC Book i noticed that I damaged cover. It cracked a bit. My heart broke. Thanks to you I won't maka that mistake again. Thanks!
This is great info. I have a question. Do I have to stretch the spine as soon as I get them? What happens if I stretch one and then not read it for like 2 months? Or should I just leave it in the plastic wrap until I read it?
As long as you've relaxed the spine before reading it you should be fine I personally take mine out of the plastic and relax them on arrival just so I don't forget to later
yea my walking dead omnibus is messed up from reading on my bed but now i have a desk for such things so hopefully my next one wont get ruined and thanks for the tip
Do you have to do this everytime you open your omnibus? I just purchased one that’s over 1000 pages and just wanna make sure so I don’t damage it. It’s already known for weaker spine
Thanks I bought the dark horse aliens 30th anniversary hardcover recently haven't read it yet but when I opened the cover I saw there was space in the binding kinda like a crack I guess it's scary hopping it doesn't fall apart on me or become worse
Hi, i recently bought amazing spiderman classic 1 (i live in italy so things arrives much later unfortunatly). I read 1 hour the first 30/40 pages with the spine down on a pillow (i was laying the big side on mi hand on like 30/45 degrese and let the other one on its own) will it effect negativetly the book? Also i see the hard cover agles pointing a little bit downwords (not very much, only if you know it you will notice it). I will be very happy if anyone can tell me if it's gping to be ok ot not😁.
You're fucked! Just kidding! Do this technique before reading again and try not to read on your bed anymore. These books are big and expensive. They need to be treated a certain way or else the spine will tear. I bought a used Batman that was read without applying this technique and the spine is falling apart. I do this EVERYTIMW before a first read and all of my spines are perfect. I own over a hundred Omnibuses.
ok thanks. its a bit of a drag tho isnt it. i only asked because i have jason arron wolverine and the xmen omnibus on the way and i dont want it to die or whatever cus i spent a lot of money on it
Standard trade which is about 5-6 issues I would say you don't need to worry about it. However for the larger ones like The Walking Dead Compendium or the Stray Bullets Uber Ali's Edition I have done this since typically trades are glued binding and glued tends to be weaker than sewn. Plus it can't hurt and I haven't had a trade break on me yet.
+Hardcover Reviews Im getting The Punisher War Journal collection and it all comes in a rather thick paperback form, i cant seem to find any hard covers. Would this method apply to something that big?
So, um, I've been reading my Walking Dead and Fables hardcovers on my bed, but I'm suppose to read on a flat surface for extra protection? My bedroom floor and kitchen table are extremely uncomfortable to read on(only places I can think to put them). Plus my cats like to smell them and sit on them, any advice?
in one of video you said that Preacher is your favourite series of all time, can you do some video about this series? I have Book One and its really great so i interested if all volume is such a great thing
I thought I did a video on Preacher a long time ago. I am planing on remaking some old videos since the quality was so low. I'll put that on my list. Preacher gets better as it goes man. By far one of the best endings to a comic I've ever read.
I recently got a copy of 'Absolute Batman: the long Halloween', (a $150 book), I did the exact same stretching technique that you have done, only I did it far slower and more carefully and still the spine ended up creaked and cracked like crazy once I started reading past the halfway mark. What the hell do I do!?!?!?!?!? 😡😡😡
I just bought the Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales omnibus. (a paperback with something like 1600 pages) Almost all the reviews I read were saying this was a book with a terrible binding. I'm always being extra careful with all of my books and comics so I didn't think it was gonna be a problem but oh, no.... the glued binding is so, so bad that I lifted it and I heard the spine breaking. I'm afraid the cover and pages will come off eventually... and I haven't even read it! that's really sad :( now I'm afraid of even opening it, I don't know what to do. :(
I don't recommend it because it's not a completely flat surface and I had a Conan Omnibus that had a weak binding. Decided to read it on the bed and since it wasn't a totally flat surface I ended up making the binding worse.
Comics Guide101 So your saying that even with doing what you showed us in this video about stretching the binding. Your still saying that I’m going to mess up my omnibus by still reading it on my bed regardless if I stretch the binding or not?
I never heard of a special way to open an omnibus. & I read em on the bed almost exclusively. I have 20 omnibuses & the spines are fine on em all. There's no issue with any pages falling out of any of em. I don't feel as though you need to follow any rules or use a specific technique in order to open & read a book. What are people doing with their books that they're just falling apart? Just don't throw em around- be gentle with em & they'll be fine.
People, dont be such consumerist bugmen. If you read a book, the spine cracks. Take pride in it. When someone has a bookshelf with books that all look pristine with no cracks in the spine thats a sign they havnt hardly read the books on their shelf.
Some just wanna keep em in the best condition possible, and true one can’t take em to the grave but they can definitely be passed on or re-sold just in case of 💰 problems
Did not think i would ever watch a tutorial on how to open a book
Hear hear
I never knew this and wish I had seen this when I first started purchasing omnibuses. This is so appreciated. Thank you so much.
Good technique, but I would also remove the dust cover while doing that, it could get damaged in the proces. Actually you always should remove the dust Jacket before opening à fat book (reading it or just flipping trough).
thank you for the advice. I got some omnibuses that I'm gonna buy, definitely going to take this advice.
I'm at level 5 but I didn't fight the omnibus yet.
I recommend not pushing down on the book at all (as shown in the video). Two pages got split at the middle of my hardcover by doing that.
stop hitting omnibus
Мт 43 Should be how to abuse your omnibus lol.
He give omnibus proper smackin
Great technique, thanks for this! Saw this after your Saga deluxe review which I'm going to get now :)

Are there any tips how to correctly open/read soft cover comics without damaging the glue?
Thanks dude! This probably explains why my Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus vol. 1 is a little bit worn.

Damn so I can't read my omnibus on my bed even with the spine stretched? 😭
@@epistarter1136 I was wondering the same thing I'm supposed to sit up like wtf

No, just once before your first reading.
Yea I started doing this awhile ago I did this with all of the graphic novels I got for Christmas
Merry belated Christmas! Thanks for this video, I assumed I was doing it correctly, but apparently not
Thanks I bought the dark horse aliens 30th anniversary hardcover recently haven't read it yet but when I opened the cover I saw there was space in the binding kinda like a crack I guess it's scary hopping it doesn't fall apart on me or become worse
Should I do this for paperback omnibus'? I like to get manga omnibus'

@@gygeson5888 holy shit! A hundred?!
Btw, thanks a lot. 😁
good video man
Would I have to do this with say one of marvels oversized hardcovers?
so do you have to do this everytime you read it or what?
I do it every time for all my omnibus and they have stayed in pristine condition.
ok thanks. its a bit of a drag tho isnt it. i only asked because i have jason arron wolverine and the xmen omnibus on the way and i dont want it to die or whatever cus i spent a lot of money on it
Does this apply to trades as well? Can't seem to find anything noteworthy about trades.

Ugh I wished I watched this before reading geoff Johns first GL omnibus

does this work also for trade paperbacks?
It would be pointless. This is for sewn bindings.
*The Question is, what did you against the wavy DC Comic-Paper ;)*
Thank you so much.
Does that work with paperbacks too

You could send it off to get rebound.
Give me the link in Romania for comic
The bad thing: you're going to spoil the book
i want video with FAT!!! Invisibles Omnibus
So, I've to read from the middle?
Who else got irritated that he missed out a turn on the right side
F*ck that I'm not doing that everytime I open a book up. Why would you bother. It's not like the binding is gonna fall apart and the pages fall out.
Comics fans: Comics are not that hard to get into bro, trust me
Also comics fans: *makes a tutorial on how to open a fucking book*
DC shitty binding, not just a "now" problem.
Only reply to this comment when the binding problem has been fixed.
why can't you read them on a bed? :(
