- This is a video about the most hated bird in Australia - the White Ibis. To no fault of it's own, this bird is only doing what it does best... which is mostly eat our garbage and hang out in parks. This is a very much misunderstood bird, unfortunately, but it only does what it does because we keep clearing and developing it's natural habitat.
This is the first of an ongoing series called Bird Tales, so please sit back and enjoy this 3 minute video about the Bin Chicken, aka the White Ibis.

I feel sad for anyone who can hate an innocent bird really. We had one on our lawn the other day and fed him some vegemite scroll. Now he’s back here every day lol We don’t mind though and have given him a name even. I find the birds really sweet.
They’re really gentle birds, but now that he has a taste of vegemite you’ll never get rid of him haha

The Natural Order has it's (ugly) side that many ignore, yet must exist in order for life to cycle adapting by harnessing strength/defence & extinguishing all else that gets in the/its way..
I honestly doubt many would adore the natural order.. ..those whom see money as an item stronger than heart would surely perish..
I love white Ibises there so calm but also quite clever.
Back when I was in primary school the school grounds (and people) were often having to deal with the wildlife and local pets treating the school like they owned it, which they basically did.
At one point Ibises started getting into people's school bags, so the school told everyone to make absolutely sure everytime we used our bags to fully close them up so there's was no hole the Ibises could stick their beaks into. But, turned out that wasn't enough and it kept happening.
The next day teachers told and demonstrated to us to close our bags with the zippers zipped to the back of the bag (instead of at the front or just on a side), hoping that the Ibises wouldn't be able to get in. To be clear they had worked out how to use zippers, I actually saw them open bags by flawlessly using the zippers like we do. But, that didn't cause the Ibises any problems.
Then the school had everyone zip the zippers to the front whilst mandating that bags had to be put into racks with the front/top of the bag facing into the bag racks and pushed as far back as the bag would go. We may have also started putting the bags intentionally close together so it wasn't so easy to get to them that way too, but that bit of my memory is a bit hazy.
This did work, but I also remember seeing the Ibises go to the bags and doing the same thing a bit; which included moving the bags so they could get to the zippers at the front. However, I think they clued-in that if they kept going they might get into very serious trouble with the school and some kind of "pest removers" (this was young me's thoughts at the time).
They stopped going into the bags, unless someone didn't put their bag face in, and went to their normal "bin chicken" methods. I don't think they stopped because they couldn't work out the bags anymore, but I really believe they stopped because they understood that the next steps might not be pre-emptive methods. Luckily our area is pretty healthy so I would still see them also pecking at the ground and in garden beds for their proper food.
They always stayed around and there's still lots in my area (I'm past school years now, to be clear) and there's other stories I have about how they're also hardy. I also love that they get along with pretty much all bird species, unlike a lot of the small "rat" bird species (native and non-native) that are here who pick fights with everyone; although the Ibises still tolerate them, they just have to defend or fly off when the small ones decide today's a good day for violence.
I loved the video and being able to see them in an environment they're actually supposed to have/live in. It was actually quite calming seeing them there as oposed to having to pretend the Ibises are ok in suburbia or cities. They're very capable birds and I love seeing them, but I wish they didn't have to live in cities and suburbia and they had more of their natural habitats to dwell in.

haha thanks for sharing! I didn't know they could be so crafty to get food. And you're right, they're so peaceful with other birds, very patient and tolerant. Quite a bit different from other Aussie birds!

Just moved to Qld and have fallen in love with this bird they have a bath and a feed in my backyard and leave me beautiful feathers❤
We have a family of them on a block next door, they mainly get those pesky lawn grubs, huge advantage. They are very sweet and polite, often swinging there head across your screen door looking in only missing whatchagot there. Mmmmmm my favourite. As a catch phrase

But… Bin Chickens just like the great Aussie Seagull, have a bad reputation because they are opportunistic feeders. The reputation is well earned IMO.
We don’t hate them, we just recognise that they are what they are.
True. But if weren't land clearing their normal habitats they wouldn't be chewin' down our garbage. They're only doing what they can to survive and with such easy access to food, who can blame them? Most people don't realise that unfortunately. Thanks for the comment!

The Ibis reminded me of our Canada Goose when I lived in Sydney... about the same size and colour, and same Love-Hate relationship.
I thought they were cute anyway.
Thanks. Yeah it’s the constant land development that’s impacting these birds, but they’re only adapting to what they’re given I guess.
I have heard that Canada Geese aren’t the friendliest of birds, but they are pretty. Like most geese I guess hah!

@@Blinsaff Geese get a lot of a bad rep in the US, mostly because people go out of their way to harass them and have grown suspicious of humans. They can get very defensive and make quite a scene when pissed off, but are generally harmless if you leave them be. In parks they are generally friendlier due to the amount of people giving them food. I've been bitten a number of times hand feeding them and while it isn't pleasant, it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as some make it out to be. They will even let me pet them given enough weekend visits.
Overall, people just need to learn to respect animals and treat them as equal beings that share this planet we call home.
