I watch hockey and follow it alot. I think the quote of a old school player rings well for the NFL as well. "If you want to avoid head trauma, stop making the equipment so good that you can't feel your hit." "They have made it so good, they have put man made missles in a playing field."
0:16 Paul Brown, the 1st head coach and namesake of the Cleveland Browns, invented that type face mask to protect his QB Otto Graham. It wasn't practical: Graham said it was tough to breath through the plastic which also fogged-up. So, Brown asked Riddell to create the face-mask at 0:26 which he patented and got royalties.
My dad was wearing one of those face masks in high school in the 1950s. It broke near the anchor points. The mask came up and broke the bridge of his nose.
I don't care what team would make this video because it's still interesting to see how the NFL went from player hurt to every god damn play to less injuries.
I think they did a study that found out that the addition of facemasks increased injuries due to players using their helmets to hit opponents without as much fear of injuring themselves. Rule changes were added to try and mitigate this.
For some reason i like helmets that have player's number on it. Some teams dont have it but colts helmet number are the biggest and most visible which make it my favourite nfl helmet - not a colts fan
Crazy how the exterior design of the helmet (other than facemasks) went largely unchanged until the 2010s. You could probably put a 2000s facemask on a 1950s helmet and to the untrained eye it would look like a 2000s helmet.
The only difference is the padding on the inside and materials possibly but since the helmets already do their job there’s only room for little improvements over time

The more the protective the helmet , the more they used the head as a weapon. Rugby doesn't seem to have as many players with head injuries. That 1950s visor has to be super dangerous. It could just literally shatter in your face on a big impact.
That’s why it’s thick plexiglass or possibly plastic
