Thanks Clint! Trimming it down to just the starting points really helped me get the motivation to really start learning anatomy. It's so much less daunting when you just start with proportions.
Always great to get back to basics, this is a really helpful refresher! Those of us who have been drawing for a long time often lose sight of the fundamentals, and our art suffers from it. I'll be bookmarking this vid to come back to next time I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can't wait for the next part!
This was really simple and helpful! I'm trying to learn proportions and anatomy atm and this was a great way to start off thanks! Maybe you could also recommend some ways to practice this, I'm about to go measure the proportions of photographs + to draw figures using this grid, and other suggestions are much appreciated ^_^
these videos are helping me out a ton, thank you so much for making this series! a cool thing you could do is give your viewers an assignment for each fundamental :0
Hands can be complex, but just like anything else, they are just made up of simple shapes like cubes and cylinders! I always suggest anyone learning to draw hands start out drawing them as sets of cubes, and then gradually round them out as you get more comfortable.
To anyone who has purchased his character design book, does it cover the depth of the figure? As in looking at the figure from the profile view on how "deep" it is. Also, does it cover body "widths", as well? And does it have more than just to basic proportion character here? I am indeed interested in in exploring the topic for "fantastic" and "cartoony" figures. And does it show more anatomy abstractions like the neck example?
This video just appeared in my recommendations and I have a question; Your series here focuses on human characters. I am looking to design animal characters for a project. Do you know of any resources for referencing this information for dolphins, sharks or whales?
If it were me, I'd start by picking up some instructional material by Terryl Whitlach. She has been the creature designer on many major movies, and has a collection of excellent educational resources. Check out her videos with Gnomon, thegnomonworkshop.com/instructors/terryl-whitlatch and her books on Amazon, www.amazon.com/Terryl-Whitlatch/e/B001KHYV8E%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share. I think you should find something helpful there, let me know how your project turns out!
I think that the most popular topic on TH-cam is drawing a human Anatomy of a man is very popular here I personally would like to know something about drawing simpli forms in perspective Unfortunately, this is not such a popular topic
There are standard proportions, but people often slightly deviate from it. That's why some people have big heads, long legs, big hands, long torsos or short or long arms, etc. Its totally normal lol
Thanks for this it's so useful! Good for anyone who wants to recap their basic anatomical structuring. Also, do you say 'heith' at 4:30 rather than 'height' haha
As I didn't go to art school, I can't really answer that question. Should you go to art school? I can answer that, and it's "Probably not." Experience has taught me that most artists who come out of art school do not receive an education that makes them employable in the industry. Save the time and the money and find alternate education sources. Take classes from CGMA, Schoolism, and Gnomon.
How much is a head tall? I plan on making this art work and I need to find out how tall some of the characters so I'm not sure how much a head is worth could please explain?
A head length is literally the length of the character's head at whatever size you draw it. Sketch the head, that's one head length, then proportion the rest of the body to match that length/size.
getting super tripped up at 6:22 is this method meant for sketching figures on a small scale only? cause i try to apply this to figures on a larger scale, and it just doesn't work at all.
Is the navel a bit below the waist line at the two thirds mark? Also not sure how to divide the bottom half. Are the knees at the one half mark or one third? Sorry just not clear on those points.
The navel sits two head lengths down from the chin which usually equals being slightly below the thinnest part of the waist. Rule of thumb is that the bottom of the knees land half way down from the crotch to the ground. Check out Andrew Loomis' book on anatomy for full details and breakdown, that's what most of my examples are based on.
Always remember to repent of your sins (sin is transgression of YAHUAH’S LAW: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) And Have Belief On YAHUSHA HAMASHYACH. HE Died and Rose Again On The Third Day So that you can be forgiven of your sins! HE Loves you! Come to HIM!🙂
Thanks for pointing the thirds and halfs! I keep making the heads huge and this was my lightbulb moment.
Thirds and halves are super useful!
my body is too big for the head
Hey prism can you help me
Thanks Clint! Trimming it down to just the starting points really helped me get the motivation to really start learning anatomy. It's so much less daunting when you just start with proportions.
I love using the Hale method, using the measure from the top of the head to the nose helps because you can keep up as the head turns.
Really needed this!! I always end up drawing without knowing proportions and the legs don’t fit the paper
Simple and right to the point. Great video!

U just solved all of my human proportion problems with just 1 vid.
Thank You.
You're welcome :)
“ every artist should know “
me: i don’t know proportions and anatomy
Well have you improved?
Arsyah Rajaka no clue
I mean... what are we doing here, right?
Which is why you're here, right? Every artist starts off not knowing proportions or anatomy, but they should and that means they learn.
soooo ur not an artist :))))
This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for.
Perfect timing. I'm working hard on proportions in the Figure II class I just started.
:)
this video has greatly improved my anatomy, and also fixing some of my worst problems so far.
glad i have found it.
These is nice, though I would've have loved any mention of the width when you were doing an excercise around 6:50 and onwards. It was mostly heights
You know you're a professional when you can say crotch without even smiling
Glad you are doing some shorter videos again! Livestreams are cool but it takes so much time to watch them ;D
Completely agree, livestreams and short videos each appeal to a different group and it's best to do both :)

Now I will learn it.
Very nice tutorial and very useful information!! Thank you for your video!
WOW!, I'm excited about learning more!

Finally Thank you on the units I was like what are units inches, mm or cm
Finally something that helped

Awesome video Clint, always super helpful ^-^ Huge fan of your art especially with MTG, keep doing what you do! :D
Thanks!
best anatomy tutorial ....helped a whole lottt
예전에 보고 너무 좋았어서 다시보려고 계속 찾았는데 안나와서 엄청 헤맴...겨우찾았다ㅠ
Thank you for making these vids!
This has helped out so much, thanks!
AAAAHH! THANK YOU! This is what i was searching for! And there is 4 parts of this useful video! Oh my God! Man, I'm so happy..
Glad I could help!
This helped a lot. Thanks!
this is so helpful thank so much!
Amazing video, excited for more!
U know ur an artist when u can draw hands without bursting out into spontaneous implosion

Not really; it's about character design, what you're talking about is anatomy.
@@Swatches Ok, thank you.
Excellent video!👍
Wow! This helped a little bit I just took notes on this stuff thanks!😁
Like your video so much! Easy to understand with great teaching materials! 👍👍👍
Thanks!
Thank you
Incredible video
It helps, thank you,...

It was really helpful, thank you :)))☺
this is amazing, thanks a lot
Thank you sooooooooo much.
These videos are getting better :) I'm happy that your channel is going in this direction
Thanks! What topic would you like to see me cover in the future?
I think that the most popular topic on TH-cam is drawing a human Anatomy of a man is very popular here I personally would like to know something about drawing simpli forms in perspective Unfortunately, this is not such a popular topic
"the wrist stops right aroun the crotch area" okay idk if i have gorilla length arms but mine are way lower than that
There are standard proportions, but people often slightly deviate from it. That's why some people have big heads, long legs, big hands, long torsos or short or long arms, etc. Its totally normal lol
Stop slouching ;)
Thank you very much
OH NO! Is this not available anymore?
thank you!
Thank you Clint !! :)
Nice content! Thank you
Just wanted to know, will you do videos about the composition and observational skills too?
Yes
Any advise on how to map these proportions at harder angles and in perspective?
Watch a prespective video on people
Thanks for this it's so useful! Good for anyone who wants to recap their basic anatomical structuring.
Also, do you say 'heith' at 4:30 rather than 'height' haha
nice man !
2:56 "a lot of other places", it's literally the rest of the planet using centimetres
That oooh moment when I touched my ribs with the back of my elbows after he said the elbows are in line with the bottom of the ribs.

im learning anatomy but i mostly focuse on animation the loomis method is hard when im animating
getting super tripped up at 6:22 is this method meant for sketching figures on a small scale only? cause i try to apply this to figures on a larger scale, and it just doesn't work at all.
I wonder what Clint's accent is?

where book
I can’t even get the head proportions right 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
Well thanks to the diagram at 3:24 I learned that if I can draw the crotch of a man I can draw a bear's head.
Hell Yes
GRIIIIIIINDDING FOR KNOWLEDGE BECAUSE I SUCK.
y'all making me feel short

Are you purposefully making your voice deeper? Your earlier content you didn’t sound like that lol
papawshuns
Idk that you need to be a doctor to learn anatomy
You can be a surgeon also.
