This is possibly the best scene in any movie. Everything about it, Eli Wallch's performance, the amazing camerawork that gets more and more disorienting, and the Ecstasy of Gold is the best track on what is probably the best soundtrack ever. Every time I watch this movie I'm blown away by this scene, and I have the same feeling that made me fall in love with cinema.
Only to be topped by the next scene !! The trio !! By far and away the best last 15 minutes in movie history . By the moment Eli wallach enters the cemetery till the end credits , it’s pure anxiety, hair revising and ecstasy, dopamine release without equal in film.
Some soundtracks in movies I find a bit tedious. But not in this film. Especially in the Cemetery scene which was just incredible. One of the greatest movies ever. The thing is it's timeless.
The director decided to release his pet dog at the start of the take so it would be in the scene also, without Eli Wallach being aware of it. Eli's startled reaction at seeing the dog was genuine.
always wondered about that bit so did a little fact check on this and seems legit. somehow that scene adds a lot of effect but also where was that dog running to or what was it running after? did the director train the dog to take that path? an answer leading to many more questions. used to think that was just a random dog that photo bombed the scene and it was left in the take for budgetary reasons.
Bro you won't believe I was about to write the same thing. I need not because I couldn't have put it better. He's dead now, but I sometimes listen to this to remember him. Those were good times.
Sergio Leone caught lightning in a bottle when he made this movie! The acting, the music, the directing, everything is brilliant. It has a epic feel to it. How Leone shifts from serious moments to comedy without compromising the tone of the film by going overboard. It's a very funny film but its not a comedy, he gets the balance perfect. One of the top 5 to top 10 best movies ever made and definitely the best cowboy/ western film ever made.
I still get goosebumps at this scene and the final duel scene, even after 40+ years of watching. Sergio Leone, Ennio Morricone, and the three gunmen Tuco, Blondie and Sentenza. The perfect combo and absolute highlight of the Dollar trilogy. This epic western tale isn't just a movie, it's a MASTERPIECE, a class of its own.
I watched this with my dad and brothers in our living room back in the 70's, I was just a boy. All these years later THIS VERY SCENE STILL takes my breath away and humbles me feeling the anxiety, excitement, frustration and even fear that he won't find the grave. The music is so powerful, it slowly grows to an unbelievable tempo in which your mind is just racing.... just like Tuco's heart as he searches desperately for Arch Stanton's grave.
Arguably the best scene in the best film ever made. It’s hard to say which scene is the best as there are so many in this ground-breaking western. This film set a new standard for westerns; influenced and inspired many actors, directors and cinematographers. No one has managed to even close to this classic piece of cinema, but many have tried to replicate it. Director Sergio Leone (an Italian) created the myth that became the American West. The number of ‘western’ parodies are countless too!
Possibly my favorite scene from this movie. My favorite part is the very beginning when Tuco falls and stumbles upon the graveyard, and then the ecstasy of gold starts. It’s such a suspenseful scene.
Because the movie isn't American and because Euro westerns were looked down upon around that time in the States. The attitude changed quite a lot later because spaghetti westerns pretty much inspired the American anti-western, like Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or Soldier Blue
The greatest song ever made was done by an Italian, for a Western set in America, filmed in Spain, for a scene where a polish man, pretending to be a Mexican, does a light jog through a grave yard for several minutes
What did he do to the dog to make it yelp, or was that a added sound effect? The dog was clearly startled but he didn't touch it or throw anything at it. I wonder if he shouted at it.
That’s Sergio Leona’s dog. He reportedly released him to startle Eli who was afraid of dogs in an attempt to lighten up the scene. As with everything else in this perfect movie, it worked.
@@mrmeerkat1096 All three of the movies in the trilogy were actually filmed without audio and dubbed over in post (as was relatively common practice in Italy at the time, and an almost-necessity for Leone's directing style, which supposedly included shouting direction during takes and playing music to set the mood), so it's rather likely that they didn't do anything and yelp was simply added later for dramatic effect.
L' estasi dell'Oro / Ennio Morricone Tuco/ Eli running between the graves looking for that one grave full of freedom/money. Brilliant scene, music, acting, scenery.
How Eli Wallach did not win the Oscar for his portrayal of Tuco is criminal and the song the ecstasy of Gold is in so many commercials movies videos today it will live forever.
There is just something about old movies that is so ethereal, surreal, and takes you to a completely different world, the music, the acting, the dialogues, the theme, it's all so mesmerizing, it's like movies themselves have a soul to it, modern movies lack souls, but these old movies have so much depth to them.
I have seen the film many times, but this unique scene with the unrepeatable Wallace, I've watched it hundreds of times listening the enchanting music of the great Ennio Morricone
Eli should have got a n emmey award for this scene it's brilliant how through all the graves he has too run past he finally finds right on with the amount that's in there it must have been difficult
I just can't afford to stop watching this movie again and again, it is the best movie I have ever seen ,probably I watch it umpteen times may be above 100 times
Undoubtedly one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. The editing, music, cinematography, direction and Eli Wallach of course. Why it wasn't nominated in any of these categories is beyond me. Which film had better music that year?
Don't get me wrong, I love the classic westerns with the likes of John Wayne and Steve McQueen in them, but Leone's movies (especially this one) will always hold a special place in my heart.
The first time I saw this scene it was a TH-cam clip like this, maybe even this very one. I never had seen the film. I did not see what was special in it. (The guy who showed it to me retorted that I had no soul.) A few years later I saw the whole movie. With the added context of *how much the guy has gone through to get to this* the scene was amazingly moving.
A scene that taps into the existentialism of the 60s, transcends the film and, combined with the rousing music, is about the search for oneself, in essence ‘who am I’?
This is what it feels like when you know your Life is about to change for the best because you’ve finally found the thing you’ve been chasing all your life.
Everyone involved in this is great, but this scene is all about Morricone's score. Watch it without the music and you'll see. The score expresses ECSTACY, all right--it's not just about "Hey, we found the money!" It's about Wallach's character's OBSESSION with just getting the gold, which he'll spend in a few weeks, no doubt. And go look for more. Ennio just grabbed the scene by the horns and dominated it.
Reading the comments, its funny how so many folks feel the same as myself about this scene. Its electric! Eli Wallach made that movie, Well along with Senores Leone y Morricone!
I know what you mean. He wasn't an athlete but he was a master of his trade. There are two kinds of people in this World my friend. Those who are athletes and those who aren't.
So we need a soundtrack for a scene where the character is running around the cemetery looking for the grave, could you do that? Ennio morricone: say less

go to Sad hill in Spain ....it's crazy the feeling 😍
When I saw this scene for the first time, believe me, I had goosebumps all over my body. It's my all time most most favourite movie. Loved it.
Its just too good. Made in 1965 and is timeless.
Goosebumps dog barking sound effect
One of the best scene ever filmed, the soundtrack makes it awesome!!!!
Some soundtracks in movies I find a bit tedious. But not in this film. Especially in the Cemetery scene which was just incredible. One of the greatest movies ever. The thing is it's timeless.
Everytime I have goosebumps
This has got to be one of the GREATEST scenes in movie history! RIP Eli Wallach!
RIP Eli Wallach and Ennio Morricone
As “bad” as he is, I loved Lee van Cleef in it too
Indeed RIP

Used to watch this movie over and over and over with my dad one of his favorites thanks folks have a great day

It's crazy because no matter how many times you watch it, you see something different every time.

Just saw this movie for the first time. This scene : goosebumps
I have loved this film for 40 plus years, but I wish I could go back to the first time I saw it on TV so I could have my mind blown again.
Real
How Eli Wallach never got an Oscar for this movie is a disgrace
What else is new? Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction, & Forrest Gump over Shawshank..sheesh
The oscars have never been about acting, they have always been agenda driven or give to in-fashion themes
An Oscar is not good enough for his incredible acting!
Because the movie isn't American and because Euro westerns were looked down upon around that time in the States. The attitude changed quite a lot later because spaghetti westerns pretty much inspired the American anti-western, like Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or Soldier Blue
Eli Wallach.. Tuco.. probably out shone Clint in this absolute masterpiece

The entire score of this film is EPIC! The movie itself is one of my favorites of all time! This song particularly gives me goosebumps
My favorite movie scene of al time. And that dog, he was a unplanned and Wallach just went with it.
He (Wallach) was terrified of dogs..
What did he do to the dog to make it yelp, or was that a added sound effect? The dog was clearly startled but he didn't touch it or throw anything at it. I wonder if he shouted at it.

i always loved the animal rat sounds tuco makes when trying to dig up the gold. hes like panting like a dog
I Love you eli❤
