The Most Expensive Leather in the World
Shell Cordovan is, to our knowledge, the most expensive leather in the world. It is also one of our favorite leathers to work with! We got a piece of the most expensive leather in the world to make something for a customer, and we decided to document the process.
Shell Cordovan is the most expensive leather in the world for a few reasons. First, the tanning process- Shell Cordovan is made by hand in a process that takes over 6 months. The leather is a membrane found between two layers of horse butt, so it must be shaved down then glazed and hot stuffed by hand. The resulting leather is water resistant, wrinkle resistant, and has an almost self-healing property that, when taken care of, results in a leather item that can literally last generations.
We hope you enjoy our project made with the most expensive leather in the world!

Many years ago, I went to a park and there was some city festival thing going on. They had horses and were giving out free rides to kids. They had a horse near the fence, and all the kids were petting the horse through the fence. The only place that was free to pet was the horse's butt, so I went for it. After watching this video, I learned that I just touched a $200 butt. That's probably the most valuable butt I'll ever have laid my hand upon in my life.

Nice. Definitely a leather I'm not using ONLY for 2 reason, 1- its way too expensive no matter who is selling it and 2 - i love horses. I have seen others use this leather in their videos and the colors are so beautiful.
When i was younger growing up in New York City, there was an older gentleman off Broadway close to 6th Ave. (Ave of Americas) from Italy. All of his products were from Italy. He would go back home once a year to make purchases. He also did minor shoe repairs. He had thee most beautiful mens and women's full leather shoes before people started using faux leather and leather upper.
"E", he had the best selection of durable yet stylish shoes. I bought 2 pairs from him because they had my name inside. One was a loafer, the other a 1/4 boot with heal. Both in a burgundy wine faded with black.
Paid $100.00 each pair in 1987. They were cordovon hand dyed. Great craftsmanship.
I miss the days when you paid for real work and received good quality.

    • @Corter
      @Corter  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Such a good story! I'd be interested to know if they were real shell cordovan, or "cordovan" colored. In...maybe the 60's or 70's? Bass shoes popularized the term "cordovan" as a color rather than a material, in an effort to get premium prices for shoes that were normal cow hide. That's why Horween's #8 is so famous, that's the "cordovan" color they copied. I'm sure the shoes you bought were super high quality, wouldn't be surprised if you still wore the today and they're as old as me!

I only heard certain things like Charlie Brown's teacher... wa wa wonk wa... price....lolol.

I recall reading about a ship that sank with a load of reindeer skins that were extremely old and valuable. I understand that Prince Charles has a pair of shoes made from this leather.

The main value added to the “Russian Reindeer” is due to marketing a finite product with a cool story.

snoflake yep, very old reindeer hides! But I still think those skins are way more expensive than the Cordovan. I have 2 pair of Cordovan shoes!

Ok, but who wore the same shoes for 100 years? If your feet stop growing at 18yo than that person must at least have been 118yo. 🤪

Even calfskin leather shoes will last incredibly long if you stick to a routine of care for them. They'll still have to be resoled and repaired from time to time.
Lasting 100 years is a reference to the shoes being passed from father to son for multiple generations.

I'm guessing that this leather is never used to make construction worker boots or other highly stressful wear products, but is mostly wasted on people that work in offices and have a wide selection of expensive shoes that get rarely used. Nice video and skillful as always.

Lots of boots are made from shell cordovan, they're just very expensive. Utility wise, shell cordovan was used for razor strops in barber shops and is still used to make strop boards for sharpening blades today in a smaller capacity

Very expensive leather but I think it isn't the most. Did you hear about russian leather from wrecked ship Metta Catherina? I just found one small piece on eBay for 4800$. :)
