Watching Adam and Tom geeking out together is delightful. Thank you for showing us behind the scenes where the magic happens. Harryhausen would be proud.
@@MLTharme I bet! It’s so freaking cool though. I love it! I would love to do it myself if it would be possible. I subscribed to your channel. Very cool bro 😎
Incredible! I wouldn't have thought that certain foam could rust the armature in an animation puppet. Love seeing how kitbashed these creations are too!
It's one of those unspoken truths about stopmotion, same with the tensioning of joints, which I'm really glad Adam brought up. People just assume because it's steel joints that it's not prone to maintenance or breakage, it's far from the truth.
I worked for CJB Machining and did the deburring and tapping on the ball-socket joints for "A Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James And The Giant Peach".
@@MLTharme I don't know the names of the tools. First I used fine grit sand paper on the flat surfaces to remove the biggest burs on the edges. Then a short triangular knife on the edges. An "s" shaped rod with a sharp edge for curved edges. A drill bit (used by hand, not a power drill) to smooth the edges of the screw holes. Then a rock tumbler for polishing.
I'd love to actually see one of these being made, I love behind the scenes movies magic and how things are made ever since I saw the movie F/X back in 1986
This was a brilliant episode, i love seeing people gush over the armature as much as they do over the finished puppet. For those who are asking if they can buy armatures, i work for a company in the UK called Animation Toolkit, and we make kits and custom fabricated armatures for hobbiests and industry folk alike, everything from generic humans, to Tippett Velociraptors, and even the odd Harryhausen and O'Brien gems too.
Vallejo paints make a phenomenal rust paint. Goes on totally wet, and it dries all crusty. It's a mid-range brown, so a little dry brushing orange or tan works great.
As a stopmotion animator myself this is just beautiful it takes such work to make a fine tune stopmotion puppet and make sure the joints and features looks real and lifelike one day I wanna make a stopmotion puppet and get into real stopmotion animation one day hopefully
If you want an internal structure, use wool (genuine, sheep's wool). Not packed tightly, it's pliable, it retains its shape well. For a cored out figure, no internals, just put some polystyrene and melt it down before painting with acetone injected via syringe.
Yes, they can, Animation Toolkit can supply prefabricated or kits depending on your budget (we even make and sell our version of Phil Tippett's Velociraptor armature from Jurassic Park
That's when you have a budget, the method they are talking about here is called the "build-up process" which goes back all the way to 1925s The Lost World and 1933s King Kong. Marcel Delgado was a master of this method of puppet making and it's still practiced today by many hobbiest and industry professionals for it's quick and gritty natural looks, rather than the time consuming sculpting, casting and injecting of silicone or even foam latex.
We need a Mad God sequel. Mad God was great, especially at world building which makes me want more. The only thing it sort of lacked was story. It sort of lost me when the Assassin died. I’d love to see a group of Assassins explore the world.
Do u guys remember that 1st troll fig from lord of rings??? It would swing a big hammer. Feels like yesterday. Also.kinda looks like that fig a little?
Use the beep instead of an audio cut for the swearing, it sounds more relatable and natural, the audio cut sounds like someone made a mistake on the audio side
Before I watch.... Someone tell me it's not all Ooooooo's and Aaaaaaah's and Wow's from AS .... Not only does he need to keep his hands in his pockets , he needs a gag too
I love Adam Savage's "Utube Channel", but alot of his material just comes off as "recycled material" such as Organization of stuff... We need an "EXCLUSIVE (Available to Everyone) Rewrite" of MYTHBUSTERS in order to obtain "more hours of viewership" for his Channel! This Channel has gotten "STAIL", dried up and forgotten of what Adam is most greatly known/appreciated of.

Not just Ray, Obie would have been please to see his techniques still being used to this day and how much his work is appreciated by people like us.
Yo Adam could we get a one day build of you making a stop motion puppet, could even be a really cool series from start to finish??
We're planning on sending him a few of our kits in the near future so you might just get your wish 😁
@@MLTharme Those would look so cool in a music video 😮! Just curious how much it would cost to make a 3 minute video 😅

What was your method of deburring back then? Was it a sand tumbler or would that have been more for the finishing? 🤔

Loving this series and learning so much from it. It's great to learn terms like "flashing" and to know exactly what you're talking about.
I love all the videos from Tippett Studios
We love visiting there!

“Mad God” is a lot of fun.

@@GrinningFeline Mad God is full stop the weirdest ANYTHING I have ever seen in my life.
Loving this series!
So glad!
Looks like the armour plates came from a 1/6 suit of Fallout T-45 power armour, the hands too.
Close. The hands and the "sword" parts are from Joy-Toy Mechs.
Just started, but already wanna let all know - I LOVE LOVE LOVE vids like this! Thanks! Keep 'em comin'!
Please get Gibby or Tippett to do an ep for Tested VR!!!! OMG!!! This is so my JAM - love tons on there, but puppets slay

@@miketharme6815 thank you!
Wait so where did he find the split tube?? This cut out too early?
Do you know where I can get some of those balls and sockets to build the armatures? What are they called?
9:25 "...spit on it." That just solved a problem for me.
Thank you.
This is from the series Poker Face right?
Bro you are fantastic thanks for sharing this video.

Wow, this is now my favorite episode.
Man I'm finally making my models and dioramas I absolutely loved mad god so happy to see this
how do you photograph this stuff? like lenses amd lighting and such..
I could be wrong but the shoulder peice looks like it came off a fallout power armour model
i like those animation armatures on their own, like some minimalist robot thing.. can those be bought?

Super dooper cool to see this. I'd love to watch him build a puppet! Get on that guys. ;)
Couch cushion foam? I thought that these things had silicone or similar material put into an injection mold with the armature?

Due to budget constraints, Ray Harryhausen often had to dismantle his creations to reuse the armatures for other creatures.
Gotta get the Cyclops into that MRI scanner!
Those are freakin awsome!! Mr Savage thanks for still entertaining us after Myth Busters. Miss the show but your show is next level.

can you buy animation armature like this anywhere?
id love to kitbash my own dude with funky proportions, and sculp around it

Look up Animation Toolkit, we make armature parts like lego or mecharno parts you can glue togeather
