@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 a few years ago I got to meet Red and Mokey Fraggle. I like to say it that way because while it was Karen Prell and Kathryn Mullen with the puppets "on hand", I found myself having a full on conversation with the puppets.
@@vigilantcosmicpenguin8721 I remember seeing a clip of when Jim Henson was a guest on Carson's Tonight Show, and I think he started the interview normally (as Jim) but then a minute or two later, he puts on the Kermit puppet and Jim disappeared right in front of our eyes. I think Carson even mentioned during that interview how incredible it was having a conversation with a puppet, even though the performer was right there. The Henson puppeteers are almost "too" good at what they do sometimes. I've also had the pleasure of attending a handful of performances of "Puppet Up!" over the years and that show format has the same juxtaposition where the performers don't stay hidden at all, they just wear solid black outfits on the stage and their puppets are framed by a camera that is positioned all the way downstage-center looking at the performers. There are projection screens in the theatre that the audience can see that shows the puppets as if you were watching them on TV at home. To be able to see it all happen in real-time is kind of mindblowing. The best way I've been able to describe the show is that it's like "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", but with puppets! They do lots of improv during the show, too. It's just...incredible. And FUN!
I LOVED Fraggle Rock as a child, and seeing everything behind even one of the side characters is phenomenal. The Henson’s assembled a group that loved what they were doing and put their heart and soul into it. They were absolute MASTERS of puppeteering.

They pushed the bounds of the technology I remember watching a Secret of the Muppets special as a kid that included an early fully digitally animated character. I've always had a lot of love and respect for what they've done. Thank you for these behind the scenes looks.

WOW, I am so struck by how MANY people are necessary to make a full-body puppet like this work! The body performer, two or more people to put the costume on, a DIFFERENT person to operate the servos! Seriously, so many... This is slightly terrifying to imagine, becoming just a CANVAS for other people's art, to manipulate to their ends, and you're gonna HELP, but you're not FULLY independent... Just gives me more awe and respect for these Creature Shop pros!!
Loved the video! It’s so cool to see such a large, beautiful puppet brought to life with. I recognized some of the team from the super fun “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge” and was happy to see Morgana as well after learning about her work as Ned’s body in Earth to Ned!! Love that show and hope it makes a return one day! Now that’s an amazing puppet!!
Wow! This suit is nothing like the ones the actors wear at the Disney themeparks. I had a friend who worked as a performer for Disney at their Florida location and she measured the temperature inside her suit (at the height of summer, but in a shaded location) to be around 120 degrees F. This suit's mesh outer layer, even with all that yarn-work, must breath a lot better than Disney's polyester nightmares.
It is so incredible to be able to see how some of this puppeteering is done. It doesn't take away from the magic of a performance at all. You still get lost in watching the characters and forget all about the mechanics of it all.
Loving these so much. The Henson Workshop is the ILM of the puppet world. Their work is always just insanely brilliant, and fluffy and in most cases very cute. 😂 Please let me know you’re doing a video with the dog from Fraggle Rock, I loved that dog as a child. 😂
Adam briefly mentioning the Godzilla costume sweat (which is 100% true by the way) makes me wish he could somehow visit the set of a kaiju movie and see the love and attention that would go into shooting something like that. I think he'd be absolutely delighted.
I was blessed to work as a local tech on a Muppets live show. one of the most unforgettable sights were all the performers sitting backstage when they were off... around several 8 foot tables with fans on them.. and their mouths wide open desperately trying to get a cool breeze into the costume so they can go out and continue. The work these performers do amazed me! Thanks Adam and Morgana for making this stagehand smile with a great memory!
One thing that really tickles me is how immediately Morgana gives the character weight and gesture. I'm a large person and watching the character's hands rest on the tummy was very familiar.
Live action puppets are definitely still a huge part of TV and cinema. The perfect balance of CGI and puppetry will definitely always produce the best results. Loved this vid!!!!
"As a puppeteer, your Situational Awareness has to utterly shift." "Oh, completely" "Your PROPRIOCEPTION has to now include the costume ." I have never heard that word before! GOOGLE says : -Proprioception (or kinesthesia) is the sense though which we perceive the position and movement of our body, including our sense of equilibrium and balance, senses that depend on the notion of force. -For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. Other examples of proprioception include: Knowing whether feet are on soft grass or hard cement without looking (even while wearing shoes) Balancing on one leg. .... Thanks for the lesson Adam!!
Man CGI cannot touch this. I absolutely love the work that Jim Henson’s Creature Shop does. They’ve worked on a few of my favorite films such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Where the wild things are.
Im 47 now, used to love Fraggle Rock as a toddler here in the UK back in the 80s up to the early 90s I think. It's still great. Is that the same costume as used back then. Awww ma, I caught a fwaggle
Absolutely loving these videos, especially with how the suits work and how they feel and even see inside of them. Learning more about Jim Henson's Creature Shop gives me some real excitement to see what they were able to pull with the Five Nights at Freddy's Movie. A very very talented company that's for sure, I've always loved seeing stuff like this. Hopefully we get a look at some of the animatronics next, especially from Jurassic Park!
I love this video, Ive always been absolutely fascinated with Jim's Creature Shop and to see how these costumes work and the detail is incredible! Thank you!
Bear works different actually! No tech, just one arm being used as the puppet arm for the head (eyebrows controlled by finger) while the other is in one of the actual arms (other arm is fake or sometimes a glove controlled by someone else). Noel MacNeal is honestly one of the coolest people alive. Big Bird works the same way!
I could watch HOURS more of this. Growing up with the Original FR, and always curious how the Gorgs were performed even as a Threater student. Thank you, Thank you! What an absolute Joy to see!
There is something about puppeteering that just can never be replaced with animation. They have a certain liveliness to them, so much so that they can actually get perceived as real people. It would not take me long to adjust and interact with one of the muppets asif they were their own individuals.
This is so amazing! I've always been curious about the innerworkings of full-body puppetry. I want to see more of these. Will this make you go back and make changes to the Totoro costume, Adam?
I was raised on Fraggle Rock, so this takes me back to being six and staring at the tv with a box of raisins. In fact, on car trips when I got bored and wanted to know how much longer until we got where we were going, my mom would tell me the distance in Fraggle Rock episodes. Of course back then we had no internet or devices to watch, so I had to imagine the episode in my head.
During first season of 'Dinosaurs!', a friend took me on a private tour of the set! We have all seen 'behind the scenes' of Studios in general; lighting, sets, back-drops, props. In Henson's world, we see puppeteers 'built into the set', or even living inside their creations. In all of this, you are never prepared for how badly it stinks! Here is a sample of the ingredients of the heady brew: Paint of all kinds, adhesives, sweat, stale snacks, over-flowing garbage-cans, old beverages that got tipped over and are sticky to the floor, sweat, spilled booze, the odd joint shared around the set, more sweat. And that is when everything is going well! Desperation to make dead-lines contribute subtle notes of Lavender and collective Madness. A professional set is grinding out footage 12-18 hours a day, under banks of hot light when it's active. It's a big closed room with no air circulation between sessions. "They smell baaaad!" Rock Biter, 'The Never Ending Story'
I don't remember whatching Fraggle Rock, but I've seen Jim Henson's Company works like Sesame Street, The Dark Crystal (my favorite) and the Muppets and They're Always So Stunning, I'm thrilled right now, I want to cry because of how beautiful work they did and keep doing
Adam you have the sense of awe that I would have, what an amazing experience you are having, so so cool. To look behind the curtain, have to thank you for sharing with everyone
I remember watching some behind the scenes videos from the shows back in the day, and seeing how far the mechanisms have evolved while still being mostly the same is honestly fascinating. I'm sure with smaller LED screens and the like, not to mention smaller motors and such it's probably helped improve things for some of these, especially those full body suits like Junior or Big Bird or the like, but still, nothing but respect for the performers who have to practically be poured out of them day in and day out. My fiance dressed up in a full body costume for a con one year, and little to no visibility, only a mesh 'mouth' to see out of, and the supports giving out in the head on the second day, it was very much the blind leading the blind!
That's really fascinating!! Thank you so much for this video and all the love and admiration to all the professionals working in this field and providing such a beautiful piece of art, and also bringing happiness to everyone watching these shows 💕
@@Dakahrii Truly dislike English and anglo-american culture that such things have to be speficied. In Finnish its easy: if it has a name, its "hän" (be it human or a pet), if not, it's "se" (that is, 'it'). But I do understand that if people get to choose their name, they should also get to choose pronouns as the extension of that name, in the same manner as Latin-languages specify the gender of household objects etc. I'm going to guess that Morgana would like to be seen as a "she", so until otherwise indicated. I'm not going to do so :)

I recognized some of the team from the super fun “Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge” and was happy to see Morgana as well after learning about her work as Ned’s body in Earth to Ned!! Love that show and hope it makes a return one day! Now that’s an amazing puppet!!
Wow this was an incredible look behind the scenes, great work everyone. Love to see the mechanisms behind the magic
I will always love Jim Henson's Puppets. There is just something special about puppets that no CGI can be.
I am DELIGHTED to see how this all works, I'm getting into puppetry myself and it's so nice to have even an idea on where to start ❤️❤️
Once those eyes started moving, the creature, quite literally just comes to life right in front of you! Insane!
What a delight!! Seing how Jr Gorg worked is something I've been curious about for decades!!
Me too! Such a treat😊
This brought so much nostalgia. Fraggle Rock one of my favorite shows as a child. Loved this 🥰🥰🥰
Omg 😱 AMAZING! They are the masters, look how human like the movement is!
So cool to see how these things work inside and out! As a cosplayer I find it fascinating! Thanks so much for sharing!
These videos with Adam at the Henson Studios are amazing!
Goodness these types of series reminds me of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Keep up the great work Tested team!
Live action puppets are definitely still a huge part of TV and cinema. The perfect balance of CGI and puppetry will definitely always produce the best results. Loved this vid!!!!
"As a puppeteer, your Situational Awareness has to utterly shift." "Oh, completely" "Your PROPRIOCEPTION has to now include the costume ."
I have never heard that word before! GOOGLE says :
-Proprioception (or kinesthesia) is the sense though which we perceive the position and movement of our body, including our sense of equilibrium and balance, senses that depend on the notion of force.
-For example, proprioception enables a person to close their eyes and touch their nose with their index finger. Other examples of proprioception include: Knowing whether feet are on soft grass or hard cement without looking (even while wearing shoes) Balancing on one leg.
.... Thanks for the lesson Adam!!
had I KNOWN Morgana was in this video I would have clicked on it sooner, HOLY CRAP I love her and her work!!!!
Man CGI cannot touch this. I absolutely love the work that Jim Henson’s Creature Shop does. They’ve worked on a few of my favorite films such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Where the wild things are.
Growing up watching fraggle rock I never ever thought I’d get to see behind the scenes
Thank you😊
Im 47 now, used to love Fraggle Rock as a toddler here in the UK back in the 80s up to the early 90s I think. It's still great. Is that the same costume as used back then. Awww ma, I caught a fwaggle
This video was incredible! Thank you so much for the peek inside!
Thank you!
I always wondered how they do full body puppets! I've been rewatching Bear in The Big Blue House with my son and I'm always amazed by the puppetry
Adam....you get to see the coolest things ever and meet the most amazing people!!!
🎉god speed keep up the works and videos😊 miss the classics down in Fraggle rock keep kool.
It would not take me long to adjust and interact with one of the muppets asif they were their own individuals.
that casual listening puppeteering at 12:50 is just so great. insane how they bring life to this.
Here is a sample of the ingredients of the heady brew:
Paint of all kinds, adhesives, sweat, stale snacks, over-flowing garbage-cans, old beverages that got tipped over and are sticky to the floor, sweat, spilled booze, the odd joint shared around the set, more sweat.
This company, and this show specifically, has always been my dream job.
You can tell morgana loves her job!
ABSOLUTELY!
@@morganaignistube love your skirt... and your puppetry lol
@@funkymunky7935 aww poor triggered baby
@@Dakahrii poor delicate baby! So easily triggered. Be careful. Your bigotry is showing
@Dakari no
Having grown up with Fraggle Rock, this was an absolute delight. I found this so much fun to watch.
Inwould gladly kill to spend a day exploring this workshop and learning from this incredibly talented team.
This is so awesome. Just one problem.... the video cut off before showing the additional 5 hours of footage!
Ha! We have more videos to come from that day, too!
@@tested you better!
fantastic costume and puppeteering! The eyes and mouth really "sells" this design.
Wow, Adam really is like a kid meeting a childhood character he used to fawn over on TV.
Adam you have the sense of awe that I would have, what an amazing experience you are having, so so cool. To look behind the curtain, have to thank you for sharing with everyone
THANK YOU for spotlighting Morgana!
My fiance dressed up in a full body costume for a con one year, and little to no visibility, only a mesh 'mouth' to see out of, and the supports giving out in the head on the second day, it was very much the blind leading the blind!
i want more! this has always been my passion. i wish i had more time to pursue it.
That's really fascinating!! Thank you so much for this video and all the love and admiration to all the professionals working in this field and providing such a beautiful piece of art, and also bringing happiness to everyone watching these shows 💕
Never knew Morgana existed before, but I'm eagerly hoping she pops back to my feed soonishly! Such a grand person!
I am also a puppet maker and costume designer, and that proxy feeling watching Adam animate the mouth with his own hand! It brought tears to my eyes! What a wonderful experience to share with others!
I'm loving the series at the creature workshop but what I really want to see is the *muppet version of Adam* . 🤣
Wow. Just wow. What dedication to perfection. I never gave that a thought when I watched Fraggle Rock decades ago..
My curiosity is wondering what was blurred out in the background at 12:35. I grew up on Fraggle Rock. My nickname was Fraggle when I was in university. Loved seeing the little Doozers on the shelf!
Gotta be something to do with the new fnaf movie as we don't even know what the animatronics look like and they are being created by the henson company. definitely a wild guess but completely possible
I love the questions about the process. Showing experts at work
Once again the MVP of this episode is “MORGANA” 😉
