How To Make Your Own Strike Anywhere Match and Waterproof It (AKA Survival Match)

  • I have been looking for a good strike anywhere match for a long time so i made my own. It's surprisingly easy. But there are dangers these DIY strike anywhere matches are very easy to light. Of corse if you make your own strike anywhere match and waterproof it becomes the most awesome Survival Match. Matches that claim to be strike anywhere these days tend to still be only strike on the box and even then that's not a guarantee. I've never tried the fabled Texas Bluetip. Homemade Strike anywhere matches Work 10 out of 10 times. I couldn't even get the best match I purchased to work that well on the box striker. Now I finally have a match that when i shoot it with my slingshot at 33 feet It will light. And the best part is I literally made these With supplies you can buy right at the Family Dollar store Down the road.

I made them pretty much the same way for the Pocket Predator contests on SSF a few years ago. The best way I found was to wet the box striker with acetone to soften the adhesive, then scrape it off into the mortar and mix 50/50 with cap powder while still wet with acetone. The acetone stops it sparking as well as allowing the striker glue to remain as a binder to stick the stuff to your matches.

Hey Kevin. Fellow Maineiac here. Western mountains. When i was a boy, learning from my father how to truly waterproof matches for long term storage. We "boiled" the entire match in wax. Then picked them out one by one. Hanging them to drip from clothes pins hanging from a wire. The idea is to let the match heat to the same temperature as the wax so that the excess wax will drip off the tip. Leaving a thin tuff wax coating. As opposed to simply dipping which leaves a thick coating which is prone to chipping and flaking that makes your match difficult to light and a waterproofing layer that is sketchy at best. Remember, youre not making a candle. Give it a try bub, i think you will like it.

Please use extreme caution while making these matches. I was dumping the powder out of the small glass jar I was using to collect everything and without any ignition source it blew up in my hand. I have a few hundred paper cuts all over my uperbody, had to get a few stitches in my fingers, I have to replace my tv, and my family and I spent the whole night in the ER.
    I feel pretty stupid too.
Please be extremely careful doing this.

I remember making grenades out of bluetip matches. By breaking off the tip and wrapping them in aluminum foil.
But not the blue tip that arr for sale with that name.
The blue tip that you used to be able to buy had a dark blue flame holder and the tip was light blue and you could light it on your teeth or zipper.
And they were twice the size of these break every time you strike them matches of today.

I used to do the same thing as a teenager (emptying out caps) but you really have to be careful squeezing them out like that. You'll get through 60 caps and have a nice big pile of explosives in front of you and the next one you squeeze goes off right above the pile and now you have no eye brows and can't breath properly for the next couple days. haha lesson learned the hard way

I love strike anywhere matches! And they are getting really hard to find. I have experimented a lot with them. Mostly Diamond brand (greenlight) And UCO. I have learned that friction is the key, not the surface. You can easily light one on a glass window, cardboard, and many other very smooth surfaces. Great video, enjoy watching all of them!

A lightly textured but not roufh surface is what you want for regular strike anywhere matches. Use more pressure on a smoother surface for more heat without wearing off the coating... Glass actually works pretty well

Get a larger amount of hot wax and dip the whole match and keep it in the wax for maybe 10 seconds and shake off. You will have a thinner coating of wax. Similar to waxing traps.

"I'm going to go dry these over the wood stove"
Then you go on to wax the matches in a lit candle with your other matches sitting near by.
Do you just try to do this in the riskiest way possible? I'm surprised you ended up with any matches.

I just want to add an idea here and firstly I make my own and the way I keep them from lighting is by putting them in a straw and melting the ends, that way it waterproofs them and keeps them from igniting accidentally. The whole dip in candle wax or nail polish I find doesn't work very well unless you are actually using strike anywhere matches and modifying them with bang snaps...

0:51 A piece of brick is far too rough for striking matches, it will just scrape the match head away. In fact most of the things you supposedly can strike matches on like standard sandpaper are too rough. For my emergency match cases I include a piece of 1000-grit ultra-fine sandpaper. Alternatively I have found a piece of floor tile or frosted glass to be a near-optimum striking surface; with those I can even get strike-on-box matches to light by friction.

Matches were about all we used from the mid 1970s into the mid 90s. Then we started using UST's StrikeForce ferro rod and F&S more.
A heads up on the wax. It will soak into the head, making it too soft to work. Matches coated in paraffin lasted six to eighteen months for me.

I wish i thought of coating the heads in wax when I made my own once. It took my hours to get all the powder from a few packs of caps and the same thing even happened to me when half way through my whole progress flared up in 1 second. At the end i finally got about 50 matches done, I put them in a match box and nonchalantly and stupidly and even pretty gently just tossed them onto the bench in front of me and the whole box went off.

Make sure to use the clear nail polish/conditioner that has nitrocellulose in it.
I can see a guy with his bugout bag dropping it after a long hike then the matches light up, build up pressure and blow the side out of his pack!

LOL Shaken not stirred...great vid Fowler.
Man that pile of very volatile matches with the heads all touching seems like a very bad Idea... Think you going to turn that tin into the most overheated hand warmer ever... Careful buddy !!
