Bamboo Building - Knots and Lashings - without nails

  • Here are two bamboo knots that can be used to tie bamboos together with no nails. Clove hitch knot to tie two bamboos together using paracord rope. Tie the two bamboos with two clove hitch knots then finish it off with two overhand knots. The clove hitch is used for tying together pieces of the trellis roofing or used to make trellises. It allows the bamboos to move around. The tourniquet lashing is a very strong way to connect two bamboos together. This is used to tie the bamboo legs to the bamboo roof in bamboo building, like the bamboo hut shown at the end. The tourniquet lashing is also used to tighten the bases of the legs together. This bamboo hut is built on top of a wooden deck where eye-bolts are used to hold the bamboo to the platform using paracord rope. Green timber bamboo (Bambusa oldhamii) was used for the uprights and blue bamboo (Bambusa chungii) was used for the roof trellis.

    Considering this to build a fenced in cat sanctuary in back yard. The bamboo would be utilized for fence posts. Thank you. LOVE. PEACE. God Bless

      Glad you are learning! I did a bamboo building class in Colombia and also learned from a Brazilian woman, Julia Teles, who had a degree in bamboo engineering. Check out the video of the bamboo structure we built th-cam.com/users/shortsq_JxrExrSTA?si=ARnf1cc9lmn-fiYC

    Thanks very much. I love bamboo and have been growing 4 types of timber bamboo and several other smaller species, black asper, Old Hamii, Latafloris, Java black and giant Buddha belly. My intention is to use these for garden buildings, so your tying techniques are very interesting as I am not keen on using metal or screws. Thanks

      The knots and lashing are pretty easy, but its easy to forget how to do it if you don't practice. I actually made this video for myself so I wouldn't forget and I can show my bamboo building students.

    I learned the tourniquet technique during my time in the boy scouts in Belgium. This was not in the standard technical curriculum of the regional boy scouts but I loved this idiosyncrasy of our chapter (in the Boutersem municipality) since it gives a more robust result than standard (square) lashing. The tourniquet lashing technique in my experience wears out the chord by choking it on the section just below the tourniquet: I'm thinking on how to modify the method so as to address this problem.

    I was trying to learn how to make a bamboo support for my tomato and found this. Excellent instruction, Tia! Would lash techniques work on smaller bamboo?

    • @TiaSilvasy
      @TiaSilvasy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, absolutely. I do two cloves and then tie it off with two square knots.

  • @Wakeupandsniffthecoffee

    Im in the middle of doing all the junctions in my giant trellis set up. I used plastic tie straps to get everything in place and up.
    But now i want to us the paracord to tie them all off.
    I bought sime nylon string and some jute string to use, but just dont feel good about it and it is tough to work with. The roll started to unroll, the string gets tangled.
    So im off to get sime paracord and continue with it.

    How did you attach the regular wood to the bamboo?

  • @Adimay03
    @Adimay03 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    When you did your tourniquet lashing for the base of your structure, you had more loops around the three bamboos at the base compared to your initial illustration. Was the method different as far as the number of loops go on your structure with the three Bamboo posts?

    • @TiaSilvasy
      @TiaSilvasy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I put a lot more at the bottom and still think about reinforcing it some more. Other bamboo builders cement the bases together or weld metal holders for the bamboo feet.

    excellent video I'm wanting to build a backyard carport similar to your structure, I live in centrel Alabama we have bamboo everywhere however I can't find thick poles thickest I find is like 2.5 inches. am I not looking hard enough? did you use regular wood (none bamboo) as the Turna kit then screw the metal roof into Turna kit? Steve

    • @TiaSilvasy
      @TiaSilvasy  ปีที่แล้ว

      We used the buddha belly bamboo for tourniquet pieces since it is very strong. We did use some regular wood for screwing in the roofing screws.

    Great video, my question is what other cord can you use outdoors besides paracord that it would stand the weather, thanks from Argentina

    • @TiaSilvasy
      @TiaSilvasy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paracord, nylon or something synthetic works well. Also old electrical cords, thats what you will see a lot in Central America.
