as an eminem fan and fan of yours, to answer your question about who murdered slim shady i would say its eminem. i think the idea of this album is to show how ridiculous the persona can be. and that most people that agree with sim shady are just as ridiculous. i say that as his older work is much more offensive and as you say in this video he doesn't quite go as offensive as he could with it. i think that's down to him getting older, being a leftist and having a trans/non-binary child. a lot of the album i feel is a parody of modern conservative views. like the whole "cancel me" "gen z sucks".
that being said i dont want to downplay your take when i say that. i agree with you, you have every right to not be happy with what he says especially when it effects the trans community.

Yea, I just don’t think sam is used to “analyzing” rap music because she even missed what kendrick was doing on auntie diaries the first time around. She can still not like it and thats cool and I respect that but I just think she genuinely has a misconstrued notion on what eminem is actually doing on the album

@@fyoutube2294 i mean fair, but also with all the misinformation and transphobia out there i wouldn't blame her even with the concept in mind. its understandable that this album would be unsettling to hear if you're trans, so i dont wanna be invalidating that.

I'd buy that if the actual death of slim was like, in the middle of the album, not like, literally at the end. As it stands right now it feels like the whole arc is all just an excuse to make the edgy music he enjoys making without taking accountability.

    • @DanielPreston-2000
      @DanielPreston-2000 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

@@katyyulig i definitely think that even with the concept in mind that its still valid to be unsettled by the transphobia, i dont mean to invalidate at all when i said this. but i do appreciate you also giving your take on this cause it is important that regardless of what eminem tried to do with the album that trans peoples feelings and opinions are taken into account.

    • @fyoutube2294
      @fyoutube2294 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

@@katyyulig i actually think he doesn’t do that by revealing on guilty conscience 2 that it was all just and dream and even states “you’re not the judge or the jury, you’re just as guilty” and im sure others have said this but compared to how edgy eminem can be, this was really tame. It definitely was an excuse of sorts to tap back into his roots but rappers like jay z have done similar things like with his album “American gangster” where he’s years into fame and wealth but creates this concept to allow him to tap back into his roots where he was poor and hustling. I think artists use concepts regularly to have an excuse or to allow themselves to create from a different perspective than just their default because if you have an idea you want to manifest artistically, why limit yourself.

Eminem has an adopted non-binary child, and he’s friends with Elton John. It would be wacky to be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community and trash them on his music at the same time. His alter ego Slim Shady would be the bigot and Eminem canceled his alter ego for us. His family and friends knows he’s joking and trashing on the transphobes whining and complaining about free speech and not taking accountability when called out.

I went and listened to the whole album, read the lyrics of each song and skit.
Conclusion: a nostalgic retrospective that takes root in current issues, including transgender people, pc culture, and other rappers. In terms of quality, beat, and flow, it is smooth and engaging. It is self-aware but embraces the offensive, mean-spirited lyrics, mostly in the first half (before Guilty Conscience 2). It is clear that it's Slim Shady, his persona, the side of him that is all things gruesome and rebellious, but it's clear this side is still part of him. He wrote it, he's rapping it, but ultimately he aims to kill that part of him. In doing so, he says slurs and keeps going on and on about Caitlyn Jenner, even deadnaming her multiple times (guest stars included). Halfway through the album, he stops referencing Caitlyn Jenner and transgender people altogether once Slim Shady is "dead". It seems like he was trying to give a taste of what his content in his "old days" would've been like in the 2020s, and then transitioned into what he wants to be about today, primarily family.
It feels like he was taking shots at her specifically because of her political disgrace; I wholeheartedly disagree with the way he treated her, and the idea that respecting a trans person's identity until they fuck up bad enough is an awful idea with a slippery slope. Gender is a right, not a privilege to be taken from immoral or criminal people.
I genuinely don't think he intended to be transphobic or come off as such, but the effects are still there.

"Gender is a right, not a privilege to be taken from immoral or criminal people." so true. no one would ever misgender a cis person no matter what crimes they do or no matter if they destroyed half the world. but god forbid trans people exist and then theyll look for any way to justify their bigotry.
(ik the olympic girl was cis and got misgendered but that was from a place of transphobia and brain rot once again, whereas all the gross figures throughout history theyd never misgender once)

Eminems adopted kid came out as nonbinary 3 years ago and featured in the video for Houdini. His kid knows him better than we ever will. This album is Eminem killing off the Slim Shady personality, because he HAS grown and continues to grow. At least that is what I got from it, as an enby who grew up with Eminems music. The character has been such a large part of his brand for the majority of his career, that it only makes sense that he would make a statement out of killing him off. This is ridiculous. If you told me a year ago I would be defending Eminem for lyrics on an album about trans people I would have laughed in your face. The point of the album clearly went all the way around and over your head, this isn't an "anti-woke" album like people on the right have said. The sole point of the album was for Eminem to bury the "Slimy Shady" persona of his old self from the late 90s and early 00s as you are supposed to listen to the album in the chronological order in the album to get the payoff. With the jokes poking fun of everyone, (yes, even people on the right) this is one of the most "Eminem" Eminem albums ever. I know that this is a vary shallow description of it, but their are videos on TH-cam talking about it in a deeper depth then me or Samantha. Also just to say, Eminem is the voice of reason on this album and Slim Shady is the one making trans jokes. Just more reason why lyrical comprehension is key when hearing a song like "The story of O.J" by Jay-Z or "Money Trees" by Kendrick Lamar.

I mean, the character of Eminem is made up of 3 different personas: he does make it clear he's playing a character dozens of times (in his art AND in interviews, articles and his book) and he literally introduces himself by whichever ego he is in the songs in question.
It kinda is an important point of satire and irony that it resemble reality, so putting a giant disclaimer of clarity would reduce the actual effectiveness of it. And it's funny that everyone says this only in the context of music as an art medium, but never in any other art form where "harmful attitudes" may reside.
Or do the actors who play in Schindlers List, the Pianist or Downfall also need a disclaimer in front of every individual piece of work they do explaining they are actors and not representing Nazi attitudes due to their performative pieces? Or should media literacy be high enough that the people who take such attitudes at face value are relegated to mockery instead of being the target audience for many different forms of modern art?

He literally makes a joke in that interview about Stan and Love the Way You Lie about "writing the national anthems for stalkers and domestic abusers" and he does exactly the same thing here but it's SO overdone, beating the deadest horse.

I think Eminem means well, and he tries his best to stay true to the character of slim shady, and I can applaud him for that, I think for the casual listener especially if they’re trans, there’s no like catharsis for sitting through all the off color remarks and crass jokes. For dedicated fans, they get his redemption arc, but that doesn’t really do enough to cancel out the weird cringey parts unless you’re invested in Eminem’s growth as an artist. I think where this project fails and where a song like auntie diaries really succeeds is that the provocative parts are IMMEDIATELY followed up with and also prefaced by context and a complete owning up to making harmful mistakes. On TDOSS you have to wait like 8 songs to get to Eminem even approaching these topics in a way that doesn’t revolve around cancel culture and by then, I’m so worn down it’s hard to care. My best friend ADORES Eminem and really loves this album so I went in wanting to love it, but I just can’t bring myself to. I think some elements of the album actively work against his intentions and he doesn’t really stick the landing to provide a compelling enough conclusion. That’s just my opinion tho and I hope people who like it, continue to enjoy the album.

  • @harasnicole
    @harasnicole 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

I mean, if you've never liked Eminem, of course you won't understand what he's trying to say from beginning to end and will only see the worst. If you're going to try to break down his lyrics, you have to go below the surface level and really listen to the words because 10 times out of 10, there are multiple meanings of what he's talking about. Like, with all the entendres he does, the man says a LOT that a lot of people who aren't familiar with his rhyme schemes don't catch.
Edit: Also, the album is a concept album, so if you're going to discuss it, it'd be better to do so from beginning to end instead of cherrypicking songs out of context. Hope that helps.

Slim Shady is basically Eminem's evil twin. The album is supposed to be listened thru to the end. It tells a story where Slim Shady came to our time, and eminem kills his alter ego because he doesn't agree with the things he said as slim shady.
Also, Eminem's kid has a trans kid.
That album has a ton of satire. Slim Shady told everyone possible to eff off, including Dre, his own kids, and myself (in like four different ways).
I don't believe that Eminem is transphobic. I do think he has a past of using shocking lyrics against people who piss him off. Look at MGK.
Everyone has the right to interpret art in their own way. But in my opinion, he's rebranding and leaving behind who he was when he was younger.
Plus, it's not just Slim Shady and Eminem. Marshall Mathers is there, too.

I think that Eminem is one of the few "controvertial" people in the public sphere whose alter ego and the jokes he makes are just that - jokes. Of course they stem from something - problematic childhood, abusive mother, extreme bullying etc. and music has been an outlet for him, but from my perspective he isn't somebody who is activelly homophobic or transphobic. He isn't trying to be a political commentator or going on a right-wing grift like some other people end up doing after receiving backlash. He's been extremely respectful to hip hop culture and has been very aware that he's one of the only white guys in a black culture. He dissed Candice Owens (right wing ex Daily Wire commentator) in two of his songs. If anything, during his career he's been a scapegoat for conservative people blaming his violent lyrics on why kids misbehave. And yes, of course Gen Z are going to find Eminem problematic. His generation did too. He's been clapping back for over 20 years and it's nothing new - he's a controvertial artist.
The impulse to defend him might come from having positive impressions from some of his music and the general vibes I'm getting of him not really being that Slim Shady character, but that being said, I still think that your review did lack some context into his work at large. Of course, you don't have to like him and I also have had moments where some of his lyrics made me cringe, but in my opinion, making a proper critique of the work of someone like Em takes digging a bit deeper in his artistic career as a whole.

1:16 I think that's unfair to say. I've watched lots of reactions to this album and the funny thing is, his trans "jokes" are so soft and repetitive that he actually made it cringe for his transphobic fans 😂. Wouldn't surprised me if he ruined the mono trans jokes for the internet and I'm here for it.
I think something that's often forgotten in art, is that it is a form of human communication, so the way people react to it, is a huge part of the art piece.
I think ultimately, this album was for his fans. It's imo an honest confession to them and an attempt to get them on the same healing path he's in right now. He seems to be towing the line between getting slim to relate to them by being an offensive bigot like they wanted, but still displaying it comes from ignorance and insecurities with marshall.
Not saying you should like it, or that you're not entitled to critic it of course. I could be completely missing the mark, I'm no expert and I often give people way more credits than they deserve. But that's the impression the reactions gave to me.
Still no matter what, I think at this point, you're absolutely entitled to refuse to see it from his side and insult him all you want. You are the one dealing with the bigotry from a vulnerable position, you won't be the one hurting him.
Best wishes to you all, hope you'll be safe and happy.

as a musician, i find this take... bad. if people only talked about music they liked, music discussion would be pointless. i believe that its good for public figures to give criticism to pieces of music, even when the criticism is invalid. when the criticism is bad it gives the person who is giving the criticism a chance to be corrected, and when the criticism is good it might cause people to think more critically about what they are listening to

Eminem is one of those polorizing artists thats a cherry picker. I have more respect for Auntie Diaries by Kendrick because at least he is speaking from his experience with his trans Uncle and Cousin. Who he LOVES and RESPECTS. He owns his mistakes throughout the song and basically calls out his religion for being so hateful.
Yes Eminem has an Adopted child who is non binary however, he has notoriously been homophobic, racist, transphobic, misogynistic throughout his career. Lets not forget the mix tapes in the 90s of him rapping about black women and calling them the n-word and calling them horrendous things. In the early 2000's use the f-slur openly and t-slur.
You can have family thats trans and still be OPENLY hateful to the community. Hence why you dont hear Kendrick use the F or T slur anymore. Hes shown WAY more growth and change than Eminem ever could. Not to mention he is just always GIVING back to his communities and loving on them instead of shitting on them. So, screw Eminem. He still hates women, trans people, queer people, and black people regardless what any one thinks. Even with Houdini i saw nothing changed, especially with the Megan the Stallion line and the trans cat line. Hes old and should be retired by now 🙄

Saying you just can't be better even if you want to be because it's too hard, is the lamest excuse to not actually be better.

I feel like I’m missing something.
I’m 32, I’ve been an Eminem fan since childhood, and this current album is all about his Slim Shady persona. I know, as a fan, Shady is a character like Cartman on ‘South Park’ where everything Shady says is just shock value. It’s not Marshall’s true viewpoint, it’s just meant to offend.
With that in mind, obviously the man Marshall Mathers is not transphobic or homophobic or anything like that. His NA/AA sponsor is Elton John! His daughter is non-binary! Like, there’s no way he’s anti-LGBTQ+

    • @ThisIsMyName-2

@@botanicalitus4194 No, I’m saying the Slim Shady persona is meant to be the anthesis to his own identity. Shady is the worst, most vile characteristics he can come up with. So, naturally, Shady is bigoted… along with being a serial killer and a rapist.
It’s a character! Slim Shady is a character. Not Marshall’s true identity. For example, I have a pitbull. I love my dog more than I care about other people, but if I created a character around those annoying cunts who want to illegalize pits I could easily do that! It doesn’t mean I agree, that’s just a character. Get it?

I mean, he's also been pretty explicit by supporting gay charities (including the aforementioned Elton John one, who has explicitly said people saying hes homophobic is "ridiculous" if you know him), being a beloved icon by many queer artists who cite him as their inspiration (e.g P!nk) and directly calling out his alter ego at the same time this album dropped for the material said in it.
Literally transcribing it and reading it makes it pretty clear where he stands.
Slim Shady: "Caitlyn Jenner is a man-bitch!"
Marshall: "Bro, what the f*ck? You can't say that...."
Slim Shady: "She's got tits and a dick: what is she?"
Marshall: "It's fucking 2024 man: let people live their lives. The shit ain't got nothing to do with you: its not that fuckin' hard. Just respect whatever people wanna be called and keep it moving..."

I haven’t listened to the album but what I know of slim shady, I think he’s more making a mockery of ppl in his generation. Like I mean they literally did that when he released Houdini and made up a whole “gen z try to cancel Eminem ✊🏻” moment. Honestly I hear the album isn’t his best, but I like the concept of what he’s doing (in terms of like the satire of his generation IF that’s what he’s actually doing) I do feel weird tho as a straight cis white man he’s doing it because I feel like him saying slurs even as a persona is still weird and it’d be better if it were someone from that community parodying their privileged counterpart. Also, ik it’s a persona, but I feel like Eminem needs something outside of that persona in his music tho (I don’t listen to his music tho, so maybe he does and I just haven’t picked it up). Anyways you look gorgeous as always 🫶🏻

Agree with your points/takes. Given the concept of the concept album, I thought there wouldn't be that much about trans people and more about other forms of hate that were more common in his past work. At the time of Slim's reign, Eminem's music was like primarily homophobic. There might've been some transphobic lyrics here and there but that wasn't anywhere close to the amount of homophobic lyrics and slurs he used and how often Slim Shady focused on gay people. If you teleported a homophobic guy from back then (character or not) into the modern day I'm pretty sure they'd be way more outraged and confused about the prevalence of gay acceptance rather than debates about trans people going on. Definitely agree the amount of trans related lyrics compared to lyrics about other groups was Eminem using the trans community for controversy and promotion, not just exploring the album concept and writing based on the offensiveness of Slim Shady in the past.

5:00 What? Who says that? 😂
Eminem has grown, we all have, but this album is not about growing moral character because Eminem always had that. This is Eminem challenging himself in skill and concept. Eminem has always been funny but not in this way where he is changing flows so many times in the same song, dropping double and triple entendres, and landing punchlines to boot. If you listen to the album in order it tells the tale of Marshall Mathers killing Slim Shady (basically a cleansing of his demons). But If you listen to it in reverse it tells the story of Slim Shady killing Marshall Mathers. The first sound we hear on the album is Slim Shady Hawk Tuah'ing on Marshall Mathers' dead body who died because he couldn't overcome his addictions. Which is also a double entendre. 😂
