Granted this video is two years old, it broadcasts the wealth of knowledge contain in your repair shop. I am constantly amazed and impressed with this channel!
Customer bought the table “brand new” but found out the legs were previously repaired. This does not sound right. In any case, extremely nice repair - good job young lady!!!!
Agree. Why do people do that? I think they are mean. My Nan used to say "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" and I think the same should be said about the '👎' I think FB need to remove it. The skill at mending such a break is incredible. Shame on those who use the '👎'.
Good grief Trena, I never cease to be amazed by your incredible skill set! My morning routine is a tall cuppa and one of your videos I haven't seen yet. You cover all the bases! 👍🏼
You are a wonderfully talented artisan young lady, you’ve even showed this old dog a few new tricks. Keep up the great work, and goodness sakes stop spraying without a respirator. 😷
Wow! I wish I could have seen the table being created! So unique. Trena you totally did the original craftsmanship justice! Definitely sharing this video with multiple people. Thanks for the lesson.
Wow great job. Too bad you were not able to reinforce the center leg as you described. Hopefully that would prevent another expensive leg failure. Interesting at the beginning you mentioned the customer purchased the table new and the leg had already been broken.
Without the center post she talked about, she should have given the customer guarantee that: "Under normal care and use this table is guaranteed to break within the next 5 years."
Fantastic repair with the dowels , I always score a line in my dowels so the glue can escape if pushing a dowel into a closed pocket instead of just pushing against the liquid . Love the videos always showing the true fix , keep it going Trena 🇨🇮👍
Binging on all your videos. Fascinating, interesting and so therapeutically relaxing, especially in these crazy times. I’m simply in complete awe with the amount of knowledge, education and talent you have. Yesterday evening my family called me over to sit down and watch a movie. ‘No thanks I’m good, watching Trena’s amazing transformations.'
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos! Your skills and talent continue to astonish and delight! The only sensory overload is The beautiful music with the loud television background! LoL
Wonderful video again Trena, a little different puzzle to solve with the dowels , i would have been scared to drill right through the legs , i would have thought i was making a bigger problem , but its the patience you take knowing in the end all will come right , i always learn something with each video, thanks again,, Norman(England)
Thanks for the video.I love it when you show so much of the detailed work that goes into furniture repair. I am retired and I do repairs to keep me busy, so I can use all the instruction I can get. You do excellent work.
Fabulous. Can't see the repairs. Smart you didn't drill to the other side of the leg so you only had one dowel end to finish. I probably wouldn't have thought to do that.
Once again amazing. You thin in some ways like an orthopaedic surgeon the way you placed those dowels and the order. I love learning these tricks from you.
Amazing repair job! Very few would ever notice. Your techniques are superb! After you made the comment about the poor leg stability, I was thinking you'd talked the customer into that post from the middle connection. However, after really analysing it, even with a braced center dowel, the legs would still be susceptable to movement diagonally. No good way to eliminate stress without compromising the design. Looks cool, but really poorly engineered. You and I design & build to the elephant test. 🐘😉 On a piece like this, you've done all you can do. Bravo!
OK, used a derivative of your dowel repair on a really small repair on a plastic clamp holder for my (quite heavy) bike lock last night. It worked great - plastic epoxy and two #6 screws. I admire your confidence and skill in your repairs - no way I’d have the guts to drill into that table leg. I also appreciate the economy of motion you use in applying those finishes. Lots of years of practice and repetition. Lots of good ideas, too
Its too bad we couldn't of seen the whole repair nevertheless, that's was impressive! quite the intricate repair, looks pretty dern good if you ask me.
There is Varathane Gel Stain for sale on eBay. It might be New Old Stock & in an assortment of colors from multiple sellers. Just FYI. Beautiful nicely accomplished strong repair! After you mix your epoxy putty wearing gloves have you tried taking off a glove after you have it stuck in place and using a finger dipped in some dish soap and water? You can mold it really smooth and it does not affect the setting or the hardness. You do need to do a finalwipe with plain water after it sets and before you apply any finish. You can actually mold it mirror smooth.
Interesting table--haven't seen that style of table leg before. You were quite confident when drilling for the reinforcing dowels--I would have had to think about that for a day or two (or longer). The repair should be permanent and strong, and the "refinishing" of that leg really turned out super.
Nice repair. However, I'd like to have a sit down conversation with the person who designed this table and explain that in this case "the form doesn't not follow the function". If it were made of metal, not wood which has grain direction and will split along those lines, it would withstand any normal usage. Trena made the astute observation that if the center were tied to the brace above, it would greatly improve the structure. I would add to that and carry the support to the floor below as well. Customer approval would be required of course, but it's just going to happen all over again to a different leg eventually!
I've certainly never tried any of this, but I saw a neat trick to get a hand-held drill lined up precisely, using two inexpensive lasers that you can buy at construction supply stores. The video is by Baumgartner Restoration, a very high-end art conservator. The title was "Conserving an Ida Kohlmeyer Sculpture". I guess this could vary with ads, but for me the method was described at 12:30 into the video. Trena probably would never need this, but I was always notoriously bad at aligning hand drills.
This was a brilliant repair. Did you advise the customer to add a support to the middle as you explained to us? Be interested to see you do that as well. Great job. All the best, Phil
It would be nice if you produced a video series of how-to’s. How to choose color, tints, stains and application. How to choose adhesives - epoxies and glues. How to select mechanical repair methods. Etcetera. I’d buy a set. If they were produced for classroom and self study would be a plus. Even though this in itself an art, there is plenty of rote learning to be had.
You're not just a furniture repair person...you are an artist. Question...i started repairing a table and found a perfect pre colored wood putty but the jar mentioned that it stayed flexible. It almost feels like silly putty. Is it possible to put that under a clear coat?
I watched another video of hers where she explained who is John.....Apparently she worked with her father. Talented lady and lovely to think she learned from her dad.
My father preapred the wax putty on the same color of the wood and then was easier to hide the damage. He melted the wax with colored ground. Then he waited till was solidified again and made a ball with it. It was very interesting system to apply to the wood holes because it make almost imperceptible the damage.
I’m starting to suspect that trena played that video in reverse with a voice over. She started with a perfectly good table and then broke it. That repair is invisible. Hehe I’m on to you trena! ;)

Lol. Love this comment!
I like how your camera work shows the doweling process clearly.
thanks Albert

I forgot to ask...what is that kind of leg carving called?
Glad you liked it!!
I’m not sure but I would pin it as a relief twist but I’m sure there are a few names for it
@@johnsfurniturerepair relief twist..writing that down...thanks!
If I hadn't known you fixed that spot I wouldn't have known you had repaired it! Good work!
Beautiful work. I would add the center support post.
Looks amazing.😍 Did they not want you to add the extra 'under table' middle support you mentioned?

Masterful work! I learn something new from every one of your videos Thanks for posting them.
Those barley twist legs are miserable to carve and tend to be rather fragile, Lovely job of repairing that one.
That's why I frequent this site - to see interesting legs, arms and seats.
you ARE so patient. So fiddly. The old adage start light, adjust from there. Another fine example of your skill set. 🇦🇺
Great work! It's like dentistry for furniture!. Thank you for sharing.

I would have if they wanted me too. Cheers!
Stunning outcome, your detail work is astonishing and is obviously the key to your brilliant results. Thank you.

I would definitely have had a middle part made, otherwise down the road a similar thing will happen elsewhere. Gorgeous table though 😊

I wonder if the customer would be willing to put a clear acrylic rod in the center just for additional support? And somehow make the rod removable

Why not use steel instead of a dowel? Like screws, or solid steel rod, wouldn’t that be stronger?
