    There's a deeper meaning to this scene than most people know. When Wallace was betrayed first by Mornay and Lockland, he continued to fight on, outnumbered and wounded but never surrendering. It wasn't until it was revealed that Robert The Bruce had also betrayed him, that he truly gave up. A man he had trusted and called his friend and if that wasn't bad enough, Robert knew of Wallace's sufferings at the hands of the King and Robert betrayed him all the same. When Wallace looks over his shoulder to see the men coming for him, only then you see in his eyes, the first look of finally accepting defeat. That's the real sad thing about betrayal, it NEVER comes from an enemy...

    One of the things that makes this so powerful is the look of disbelief on William's face. Like, "No, it can't be. Not you. Not the one person I had faith in. That's impossible."
    Entire world comes crashing down as reality sets in. Then the tears start to roll.
    At that point, William, as portrayed by Mel Gibson, basically thinks, "It's all a lie. It's all a farce. It's all been for naught."
    Having been betrayed by my childhood friend, this hit me really hard when I saw it for the first time in years.

    • @aenon6048
      @aenon6048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tayb7731 one of the best scenes I wrote, not the best. But I stand by it.
      let me explain:
      Up until this point, the movie built him up until to be a man of unquestionable focus and determination. An unbreakable spirit, like a force of nature. By his spirit alone he inspired thousands to fight against the odds. The audience took that journey with him and feels inspired by his determination.
      then, this scene, first he falls and the audience knows he isn't dead, then at 1:30, he strikes back, as expected, but now: the removal of the helmet..listen to the music until this point..notice how it culminates and the strings set it at the exact moment of the revelation (for him and the audience) at 1:35..the camera is focused on him..just his face against the sky..at first confusion in Wallace's eyes.."What is going on"..then his heart is breaking..everything he believed in shattered in an instant..no words are spoken..just the music and Gibson's eyes..and then back to the Bruce..no words..just shame and regret..begging Wallace to understand why it was necessary...then..1:50..it finally sets in..it's over...the alliance is broken..the foundation of his spirit evaporated..and it was a dear friend who betrayed him..the pain of his wife being murdered now instantly sets back in..his armour of defiance is gone in an instant..1:57..the Bruce begs him to understand..crawls a bit closer..at 2:00..it's over..Wallace's spirit has left him for good..switch back to the Bruce who's dying of shame and regret..2:19..Gibson's eyes just asking "why?"..back to the Bruce..2:25 (what have I done? What have I done to this man..to my friend..to my people..to myself?) he is now forever changed, it's the very moment the future king of scotland is actually born..before that moment he was just a son trying to please his father. Listen to the variation of the theme by Horner..how the original love theme is here revisited in a powerful and heartbreaking requiem. Anyway..i could go on and on of course.
      The remarkable thing about this scene is that this pivotal change in the story and turning point for some charactes is transported merely by facial expression, music and camerawork. In my view Gibson's best work by far (and James Horner) and one of the best scenes of movie history.
      The rest of the movie isn't bad as well, though not as good as this scene.

    The movie did have innacuaries yes, but it was filled with accuracy too. Here's a short list;
    - Scots were the last territory, to concrete rule over. Edward was well on his way to ruling the Welsh (the archers would form his front lines), whilst the surname itself 'Wallace', actually derives from the term 'waleis', meaning foreign or Welsh. His ancestors would have been welsh, that it not uncommon in the region however. Dal Riada were of welsh descent, the Picts - early celts of unknown route descent and the Scots, likely Irish Celts originally. Although Scotland, as a nation, was new. It was an amalgamation of Celtic, tribal peoples with Scots, Pictish, Gaelic and Old Englsih being spoken as well as derivations of Saxon and Norse words assimulated.
    - He was mulilingual, speaking French, Gaelic & English, his father was a knight and local Baron.
    - He was the second born, and his seal has the bow (likely from hunting skill rather than fighting as only first born sons go on crusade)
    - Tales of his romance come from secondary sources, however there are many and as we know, illiterate populations write songs and share poems, passed down as lore. So it is likely and reasonable to consider, as much as to doubt. The accounts describe how he met isi bride in church, who was beautiful and under the unwanted affection and attentions of the local sherrif.
    - He murdered the local sherrif William Hesslerigg during cover of night, the reason of which is not documented yet hugely fabled.
    - His army were composed entirely of serfs. Scots were peasants tied to the land, and they were the first peasant army to beat a heavy horse charge - ever. No army had beaten the English in 300 years. There was a warrior society, amongst nobles, who would fight for the papacy, on constant crusade. There is no evidence that Wallace, ever crusaded as the second born.
    - He fought using Shiltrum tactics (rounded armoured units), as well as the Pike (adopted from the Swiss).
    - He defeated the English at Stirling, where his forces attacked from high ground as the English cavalry assembled lines once they crossed Stirling Bridge. With their forces bottlenecked, the terrain was boggy: they were trapped.
    - He was officially made 'Guardian Of Scotland', at Stirling and it was likely to be the Bruce who knighted him. The guardian would have been left in charge, should the King be absent.
    - He did then invade England, he did then sack York, killing all English as he went (even women and children). Accounts share that he burned schools and sacked monestaries. It can be likened to the revenge reaped onto Germans, and thier women, by Russians, in retaliation for the extreme brutaility shown towards Slavic and Russian peoples by the Germans in their advance to Moscow.
    - He did then lose at Falkirk on his return, when his own cavalry deserted him. Edward did also, head this army himself.
    - After defeat, he travelled to France to petition the king (documented), as well as Rome to petition the Pope (also documented). He sought Papal support for an independent Scotland, a method later used (succesfully), by the Bruce with the 'Decleration of Arbroath'.
    - On return from Europe, he fought alongside Scottish Barons, in border battles.
    He was betrayed, and by his best friend, whose children he was godfather to: Scottish nobleman Sir John Menteith influencing the wonderful words of Scotlands Bard, Rabbie Burns...
    - "O would, or I had seen the day
    That treason thus could sell us,
    My auld gray head had lien in clay,
    Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
    But pith and power, till my last hour,
    I'll mak' this declaration;
    We're bought and sold for English gold -
    Such a parcel of rogues in a nation."
    - During his trial he remianed silent aside from a response to the charge of treason, "I could not have committed treason, when i have never sworn to this King" (He had however sworn allegiance to the banished, then figure head, Scottish Balliol).
    - He was hung, drawn and quartered with his body parts sent to all corners of the Kingdom whom Edward intended to subdue and rule.
    - He was around 6'6 feet tall.
    - The Bruce took up the mantle, defeated the Englsih at Bannockburn, to fight the rest of his life for Scotlands Independence which finally, based on Papal recognition of an independent Christian nation, was free in the 1320's.
    - As the 'Decleration of Arbroath States', "for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
    These are the facts as we know them folks, the movie (aside from its romantic components), has its finger on the pulse of the dark age hero.

    It’s this feeling like no other betrayal, you literally feel the emotions moving from one side of the body to the other side of the body ( like from the stomach, then to the brain ), it’s almost as if your body is trying to distribute the energy in motion to all the senses but you malfunction in doing so, because the scene is so surreal ( betrayal ), you start to try and analyze the situation and you still are malfunctioning ( as you could see in his facial expressions ). It’s like getting knocked out and brought back to consciousness and then knocked out again in a recurring sequence.
    Oh how this emotion is so familiar to me.
