It's not just BYD developed a pickup truck, which they've never built before, but the crazy thing is they are also simultaneously developing a whole bunch of other cars which they've also never built before, such as that luxury electric wagon (Denza Z9) doing donuts behind them, plus recently or soon to be launched models such as a luxury MPV (Denza D9), luxury full size SUV (Yangwang U8), electric hypercar (Yangwant U9), luxury electric executive sedan (Yangwang U7), along with the Shark's sister DMO off road SUVs (FCB Bao 5). And that's not even mentioning all the regular cars BYD was also launching over the past couple of years, such as the Seal, Atto 3, Dolphin, Seagull, Seal Lion etc. And that's still no even mentioning BYD is also doing full redesigns of all their PHEVs too! Thanks fellas good review. I’ve always been bothered by why old auto brands keep screwing tradie/lifestyle customers with rip off, low tech, low comfort ute offerings. Like obviously their pax models are better quality, why wouldn’t cashed up tradies & small biz owners not expect the same or better for the money? This shark ticks just about every box for me except: Passthough rear tub, and 180degree power up and down tailgate. These functional features would’ve knocked the comp for 6. The real 4x4 track performance is very ordinary in the real world.. Maximum hill climb angle is 30%. Maximum! Very bloody ordinary and it doesn't have a low range. It's basically traction control. All this adds up to a very soft roader ute. Ok for most people who shake at the bottom of a big hill. Be interesting to drive it down really steep hills. This shouting reviewer is actually a sales schill for the car. Would rather he told potential customers the factual limits or inexperienced people are going to get in a world of hurt on tracks.
Chinese man-made cars have unlimited imagination. If BYD launches this pickup truck, it will definitely have a huge impact on the Ford/Toyota pickup truck market.
Hilarious to think the Ranger is regarded as the standard for driving quality… I’ve been unfortunate enough to have to drive one recently and have hated every second of it. That being said, all current utes are pretty awful to drive anyway.
We have Hilux, Triton, and Ranges at work... The Rangers are leagues in front of the others. Everyone is trying to get a Ranger. I think that says something
We rented one for two days, it was the worst riding and driving vehicle I’ve driven in recent memory. Had a friend who was going to buy one. After test driving one he bought a Nissan frontier pro4x
I have driven a 2023 everest 2.0 and 2023 ranger 3.0 long term - they are awful. The engines sound like they're powering a wind tunnel, the gearbox clumsily hunts for gears, and the body roll is awful. My 2009 x5 30d is just inanely more refined. Hilux drives way nicer than ranger / everest. I honestly don't understand why the Fords are popular.
Hey! Love the channel. Could you guys do videos of your travels as vlogs as well. Would love to hear your reviews of airlines, hotels and behind the scenes at shows and auto events!
Wow, I really really love the concept of a Ute that you could do all of your running around town just on the battery, then an engine for big trips and hauling … the battery is even big enough that if you forget to plug it in one night you will still be ok. EDIT: I guess that it should be noted that if this vehicle is used as a workhorse, loaded and towing on the highway, once that battery is empty, you only have a little 1.5lt 135kw 260Nw engine … that admittedly could be an issue! But gee, unladen it’s incredibly heavy! 0-100 is incredible, but most people do not have the skill set for that, 7 seconds in a Ute would be more than enough. Plus a turbo Diesel would be safer on touring trips where you need to transfer fuel … but I understand the petrol works better as a fast start up generator etc. Yep, well done China and BYD, you are making Toyota and Ford look like they have been exploiting customers with low level products.
If you want a BYD in Canada, you'll need to elect a gov't that (i) isn't as paranoid protectionist as USA; (ii) will intelligently negotiate a BYD assembly plant in Canada and waive the 100% tariff for made-in-Canada BYD vehicles.

Some nice features there - Power from two motors is great - PHEV efficiency - 240v power ports for fridges and other gear for camping! - Ride and coils Downsides - 2.5t load - Need an electric remote control cover for secure transportation of tools and stuff - the steps at the back like the ranger would really be helpful when accessing back tray - For lighter longer loads you could do similar to what Ford has done with its movable tailplane and remote control cover - For heavier longer loads you really need some sort of system that will allow both the roof and the base of the tray to support the weight. eg: Carrying a ladder or a large sheet of plywood. eg: A couple of pots in the rear on each side you can drop a frame into, and lock the frame in with screws. With roof racks they could support longer and heavier materials. (There are existing ladder racks around ATM, but they sit on top of the tray and as a consequence wont hold a lot of weight). Observations - Current Amaroks days are numbered - Ranger will be challenged, for the more RV and not trade use. - Tasman will have immediate competition. - Other Utes will have to step up quickly or become like the dinsosaurs - that means Toyota ...

I took a couple of Alpha's for a drive recently. Definitely would go the hybrid as it had excellent performance, but I found with both the hybrid and diesel model that the suspension sucked. I’ve had one for 6 months it’s the best truck I’ve ever had 😊 drives amazing on the road and performs well off-road. It’s great if you drive electric, the engine is too small after the battery is discharged. The comfort is another level in terms of comfort I can only imagine a rivian being better.

The car should be astonishing. I really hope that BYD back up the product with good after sales support. At the moment, I hear it is hit or miss in Aus. Otherwise the car should be a game changer.
The main constraint lies within its cooling capabilities, because a series hybrid where the engine is churning out Amps and has at least two or three electric motors and motor controllers they all need cooling.
@@toyotaprius79 The constrain is not the issue, 3.5t is just too much for any mid size ute to tow IMO, if you want to tow heavy weights like this regularly you should really be stepping up to something like a RAM etc as these are designed to safely tow big loads.
@@tomskellern6128 If they did 3 ton, then people would be saying they should have done 3.1 ton, then 3.2 ton, then 3.3 ton, then 3.4 ton, 2.5 ton is a sensible amount for Utes of this size, if you are towing more than that commonly you should really be looking at a larger vehicle, these small utes can easily get into trouble with 3.5 ton of weight behind them, they just don''t have enough mass in the vehicle to handle 3.5 ton of weight behind them in an emergency.
Interesting fact: on parallel hybrid mode, the engine connects to the front wheels only, making this another of a very few cars with longitudinal fwd drivetrain.
The Ranger won't compete with this, it only has a 11kw battery for rubbish EV range and it will cost a lot more, I think the BYD will sell a lot to weekend warriors / families, the BYD has a really nice interior, I don't think tradies will buy this as it doesn't have the payload capacity but lets wait and see, whichever way it will be cheaper than Ranger or Hilux so I think the general public will take to it like crazy, Ford has done themselves a dis-service by taking so long to bring out the PHEV Ranger, and Toyota Forget it back in the stone age
My only gripe about the BYD is that it's a sure series hybrid where the engine has zero connection to the wheels, this does mean higher energy losses and fuel consumption at high speeds and loads. However the Ford Ranger is a simple deadass parallel hybrids with one electric motor bolted through the transmission which is subject an even bigger loss of energy from the battery and less flexibility than a two motor hybrid - but the engine's mechanic connection through the road and inate inefficiency gains it a benefit at high speeds and loads.
@@toyotaprius79 I saw in a different video that there is a essentially a battery bypass gear letting the engine run the wheels directly when it's at high RPM ❤

Wow, I really really love the concept of a Ute that you could do all of your running around town just on the battery, then an engine for big trips and hauling … the battery is even big enough that if you forget to plug it in one night you will still be ok.
EDIT:
I guess that it should be noted that if this vehicle is used as a workhorse, loaded and towing on the highway, once that battery is empty, you only have a little 1.5lt 135kw 260Nw engine … that admittedly could be an issue!

Some nice features there
- Power from two motors is great
- PHEV efficiency
- 240v power ports for fridges and other gear for camping!
- Ride and coils
Downsides
- 2.5t load
- Need an electric remote control cover for secure transportation of tools and stuff
- the steps at the back like the ranger would really be helpful when accessing back tray
- For lighter longer loads you could do similar to what Ford has done with its movable tailplane and remote control cover
- For heavier longer loads you really need some sort of system that will allow both the roof and the base of the tray to support the weight. eg: Carrying a ladder or a large sheet of plywood. eg: A couple of pots in the rear on each side you can drop a frame into, and lock the frame in with screws. With roof racks they could support longer and heavier materials. (There are existing ladder racks around ATM, but they sit on top of the tray and as a consequence wont hold a lot of weight).
Observations
- Current Amaroks days are numbered
- Ranger will be challenged, for the more RV and not trade use.
- Tasman will have immediate competition.
- Other Utes will have to step up quickly or become like the dinsosaurs - that means Toyota ...

2.5t is more than enough for a ute of this size. 3.5t is too much for these smaller utes
