    Having used the cheap tools previously:
    Suction cups - The bit where the pull ring attaches to, just rips off.
    Pry tools - The thin tab, the prying bit, just snaps off.. dont have to worry about breaking the handle, you'll junk the tool long before then.
    Screwdriver and bits - The bits are made from cheap cheap white metal. They just chew out or mush as soon as you apply any force.
    Tweezers - Usually fine.

    The problem with those China-made toolkit is that when used on really hard to twist screws,the tips become rounded. The metallic tips are rather soft.

    • @GrandHighGamer
      @GrandHighGamer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah you're losing the hardening. But if you're more of a hobbyist they're obviously pretty much fine. The nylon spudgers and 'guitar picks' are garbage offbrand though, as they're simultaneously too thick to easily get into gaps and too bendy to be used more than a couple of times. Likewise suction cups are often bent and unusable.

    • @MichaelScrip
      @MichaelScrip 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Same thing happened to me. I bought the orange Chinese kit before I saw this video... and all of the screwdriver bits I used are rounded and ruined. I'm guessing the real iFixit kit doesn't suffer from this.

    • @DragonBuilds

      If they are a little soft it should be fine for computer stuff. If they are actually imprecise, they'll strip out your screws.

  • @Dee_Just_Dee
    @Dee_Just_Dee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I've been using an iFixit kit since around the time this video came out. I did manage to find one definite but minor drawback to it: Since the bits just sit in cutouts in a block of foam, if you have a fumbling coworker, they could put a bit in the wrong slot and stretch it out of shape, causing it to not hold its proper bit anymore.

    As a former cell phone shop employee, I'd like to point out that while iFixit bits are great for fixing a lot of different devices over time, imho they aren't great for prolonged, repeated daily use. If you need to fix a lot of the same stuff with the same bit, especially in mobile devices, the shop I used to work at used Wiha brand screwdrivers for almost everything. My manager worked there fixing iPhones for 6+ years, and has probably replaced his Phillips #000 Driver twice or three times. I've been taught to avoid iFixit bits for the long-term durability factor. Just my two cents worth.
    Have a nice day!

    • @LocoHosa
      @LocoHosa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      I feel like this is a really fair complaint as well as a fair compromise from them. I don't want every bit to be made of the best steel ever because most bits I'll only use a handful of times. The bits I use regularly I can buy higher quality versions, or just a handful of spares.
      I'd also say your judgement based on a bit that is particularly small and delicate. I could use Ifixit daily for server and laptop repair and I doubt I'd have the issues you describe.
      Just my $0.02.

      If you repair devices all day you dont wanna screw around with a bitset anyway, i mean who wants to change bits constantly? Better to get a nice Wiha picofinish or Wera Kraftform set, much much quicker.

    The problem is iFixit seems to be catered to the U.S. for most parts. Tried ordering their essential tool kit once and while they do ship to where I'm currently living, the shipping cost alone was over 3 times of the tool kit's price. Would love to see them expand and open a couple more stores in different locations.

    • @nan.a323
      @nan.a323 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Moody_Blues_ this is quite old, but I'd like to give some insight as someone who lives in a third world country.
      in Brazil, shipping prices are TERRIBLE.
      the products are expensive (since they're charged in USD) and the shipping doesn't help, especially when taxes are in the mix.
      in a nutshell, the stores that do ship here (which are almost none, when talking about the "reputable brands" we see in LTT's and other tech youtuber's videos) are REALLY expensive, so we tend to make do either with cheaper national brands or with the china stuff from aliexpress or banggood.
      i believe that these companies would only have things to gain if they paid a little bit more attention to growing markets like ours, sadly tho, it takes money to get money and most of them are not willing to bet on things that might not catch on.

      But it would be cool to make a test in a soldered screw (every bit type avaiable like phillips, torx, etc), using a torquimeter, trying hard to unscrew it (using even a lever system if required) and measure how much force is used before the bits suffer any significant damage.
      It should give a really cool idea of how much of a difference in resistance there is with those.
      I think that maybe you guys could go in project farm's channel and ask him to do this test, this guy do this kind of tests (even tho it seems to be more related to industrial stuff), but idk.

    Been using that same exact Chinese set off amazon for the past 4 years. Just swapped to the full iFixit kit to spoil myself last week :) Funny to see this video a few days after making the swap. I will be keeping the Chinese set as backup but enjoy the quality of the bits in the iFixit a lot more. Less stripping and sheering.

I can't verify the differences between the two, i just know the generic kit worked for me. From an observation standpoint some of the tools look identical.

    I have my small ifixit that I got for working on phones and iPads, but then I came across a great little 14-piece precision screwdriver set at Canadian Tire, Mastercraft brand for $10! This is a great complement to my ifixit kit, certainly doesn't hold a candle to the full 64-bit kit from ifixit and of course doesn't include lots of other bits like suction cups etc. The screwdrivers will cover all the basics - straight, philips, torx (no security torx, though) and even one hex head. It also includes two sets of tweezers, one straight and one with a bent end, both of which are very sturdy and really great where the ifixit ones fall down. They were on sale when I got them, I can't recall the regular price, but it was a fantastic value for me. Yeah it's missing a lot, but so far it's more than adequate for my needs. Oh and the screwdrivers are magnetic as well.

    Just happened to forget to talk about the warranty. I had the original silver screwdriver kit that was referred to and I love the handle, I had a little bit of issue with the bits chewing out and I finally got around to figuring out which five where the bad ones and contacted them and they replaced my whole kit with the new one!! The bits seem like they're better and I haven't have any issues so far and if I want I can use the old handle but in some ways I like the new handle too. I will say if you go for a generic kit be aware that not all of the bits have the same strength which could be good that you won't strip out a screw at the same time you might end up stepping out screws when you strip out your bits.....

    I think the big take aways here are
    1) if you want it all in an easy carry case, ifixit is the clear winner
    2) spend the money once and never worry about having to find a similar product to replace the broken ones.
    3) the ones Linus recommend in his eyes were in addition to the ifixit ones due to the slight differences that the kit lacks.
    Overall, I think a thinner ifixit kit with a few of the AliExpress tools would be the perfect setup. Great job being honest and giving detailed explanations as to why you like/dislike either set. Also, more Anthony! He's incredibly knowledgeable but isn't as nitty gritty as level1tech. He talks alot about the stuff I want to hear but ramps down the vocab and terms to an easily understandable monologue.

      it's not about the location of manufacture perse, there are great products made in the same locations as bad products. it's just that in places that do produce bad products, it's up to the Company buying manufacturing space and time to fly over THEIR OWN QA to manage things because China isn't going to do it for them (and is known to secretly downgrade what is produced over time).
