Your compositions are incredible!! In my opinion, you're one of the best musicians out there, that's a bold statement to make but in my opinion, it's true.
What an inspired video, Will! That little Fylde sounds like great in every instance, deep, clear, warm and focused, all at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
Surprised at how well the intonation remained in the low Cmaj7 and B tunings. Is it a short or long scale guitar? Your tone is as lush as always, the guitar sounds like a bigger instrument than it appears to be.
Cheers Don - and yeah the intonation is pretty satisfying across the board. Of course a light touch on the left hand required... particularly as this is indeed a shorter scale instrument. But the result is an epic sounding, tiny guitar!
You inspire me so much, thank you. I strive to one day compose like you do. Always good to see fylde guitars. Something about your work reminds me of beautiful Lake District
Thanks man, really appreciate that. Composition is such a buzz - hope you’re enjoying the journey! Ah yes, Fyldes are beauties for sure, as are The Lakes!
Beautiful playing. Is it just me or do the low strings sound better when played open then when fretted? Sometimes I lose the bass notes when they are fretted.
Hello sir, what do you make of sapele Vs mahogany as a back wood? I love mahogany's thrumming mid range and it's warmth and character & sustain. The mid range hump can make everything sound "country" Sapele's even EQ and sparkling trebles make it applicable to a wider range of styles imo and although not as warm as mahogany, the trebles shimmer in a way that I think really benefits fingerstyle. Anyway, thought would be good to get a great guitarists thoughts on this
Nic Jones used a thumbpick, I guess that hard surface against the strings with maybe a cedar top was that tone he got with his percussive technique, fingers are sweet though ...plectrum users try bison horn plectrums!!!!
Very lovely! How & why were the interesting woods selected for your guitar? Were they your choice or Fylde’s? They aren’t the standard woods for this model.
Thanks Bill! They were my choice, yes. I had been quite taken by these Ariels for a while, and had an opportunity to play a few up at the Ullapool Guitar Festival in Scotland. Wasn’t sure which woods to go for, until one year Roger made one with the spec you see above which just really connected with me. I asked if he had enough of the same wood to make one more for me - and luckily, he did!
I love listening to you play and I've been experimenting with different tunings. I wonder how you keep track of the notes in your head with so many different tunings? Are you picturing the notes themselves or is it the shapes that you remember? It's pretty mind boggling to me.
Hi Kim, thanks kindly. And yes alternate tunings are great fun to explore. I’d say there’s a bit of that going on during the composition process, but as I memorise the pieces it’s not so much about remembering specific note names. I certainly wouldn’t be able to sight-read notation in Open B - that’s for sure! 😅
Ive been offered one but as a finger strummer and some time finger style it would be wasted, maybe a J 45 or the LG series but at 72 it seems to require and deserve a player.well played Will delightful
Thanks John, appreciate the kind words. They’re fine guitars in numerous settings, I find. Quite a few songwriters seem to favour them for strumming work as well! Versatile little beauties =)
I have bought an beautiful Fylde Ariel and am experimenting with setup - It would be really helpful to know how high your Elixir HD Lights 80/20 (13-53) are at the 12th fret - I've taken a bit too much off my saddle unfortunately - a bit of a buzz and lost tone and so starting over again....Thanks and love your music and playing.
Hey Nick - congratulations on the Ariel! Just had a quick check, looks to be 2.4mm for the 6th string at 12th. You might want to reach out to Rog to check what he’d suggest as “standard” for his Ariels. Hope that helps, and thanks for the kind words!

That’s very good of you to say, Zeerak - thank you.
Sound's amazing in every tuning, super versatile Instrument. Beautiful music as allways ☮️
Thanks man, that’s much appreciated. And yes - amazingly versatile little guitar this =)
What an inspired video, Will! That little Fylde sounds like great in every instance, deep, clear, warm and focused, all at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Marc - appreciate that and thanks for listening!
Brilliant video Will!
A great way to appreciate the nuances and multi dimensions of a fine guitar and player. Yes, more! : )
Oh thanks, Paul! I’ll see if I can rustle up another couple over the next couple of weeks =)
Wonderfull Will
Incredible
Please continue to record the video. Your playing and sound are great. This is motivating!
Thanks Sergey - will do!
thanks, it gave me multiple way/options to venture melody.good wishes
Thanks for listening!
AMAZING as always, Will!
Oh thanks Len! Appreciate that =)
That's an amazing instrument, probably sounds great whatever you do with it!. Will have to try the open C maj7! Great compositions as always.
Cheers John, that’s good of you to say. And yes - Cmaj7 is a real peach of a tuning I think!

Beautiful and interesting. Love DADGAD. Just noticed the zero fret on this guitar.
Cheers for listening, Steven. Yes - interestingly the zero fret is something Roger at Fylde does for all his instruments.

What a great combination: Will McNicol and a Fylde guitar!
Love me a Fylde I do!

@@will_mcnicol Great - Many thanks for the help Will - Much appreciated.' I'll try that
What gauge strings are you using?
I’m on Elixir HD Lights 80/20 (13 - 53).
