About half of people smoked at this time. It was a multi-generational leftover of World War 2, during which cigarettes were passed out as a free supplement to American troops. For several decades, you would have to specifically request a table or an area to be free of cigarette smoke in an establishment.

The hotel is haunted and it was feeding off Danny's shining. I think that's why the ghosts were able manipulate physical objects and eventually become visible to even Wendy. The more the hotel fed off Danny the stronger it got. But I didn't read the book so I could be wrong.

I think Danny inherited his shining from his father. His father didn't know he had the shining, but the memories in the hotel started affecting him subconsciously. That's why he was the one starting to see the memory ghosts and he was the one giving them power and reality over time. His shining made the memories have reality to the point where even Wendy was able to see them. I agree that Danny was also powering the memories, but I think the father was doing more to give the memories reality. His emotional problems made him vulnerable to the strong emotions imprinted on the hotel. I also haven't read the book, but that's the impression the movie gave me.

Wendy saw some things pretty early on, but not the ghosts, not right away. She'd hear party noises, she'd see confetti in the elevator, etc. You're spot on about the hotel feeding off Danny, and they wanted him to stay.

The Donner Party that Jack was talking about in the car (8:14) was a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a multitude of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846-1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of them resorted to cannibalism to survive, eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness, and extreme cold. Documentaries about The Donner Party are on TV now and then and I remember learning about them in school when I was a kid in the 70s. I kind of think kids now don't know about it.

The caretakers job is to watch over the hotel all winter to keep it from the elements. It's explained better in the novel, where Jack is required to watch over a faulty boiler, heat the various wings in a sequential order to keep the pipes from freezing, and do any repairs that might happen due to the weight of snow. Before the snow hits, he has a minor adventure fixing some shingles on the roof that reveal a wasp nest. He uses a bug bomb to kill the wasps, then gives the empty nest to Danny who keeps it in his room. In the middle of the night, the nest comes back to life, with wasps stinging the whole family before Jack puts a large bowl over it and brings it outside. It's the first scene in the novel where the hotel starts to terrorize them.

I watched this first on a big screen in the front row in the 80s and the Terminator. Both made quite an impact (also scary when the sound and canvas are so close, plus me not a big horror fan) and are still among my favorite watching. Maybe if people watch 'cinema movies' on TV or small monitors now, it's not quite the same. And a theatre full of people gives a shared experience - these react videos are always nice for getting other viewers' points. Btw., here in Scandinavia we now have weather like in the film, with lots of quiet forests, cottages, open lakes and empty hotels, but none are scary to anyone - it's a great winter season for skiing, hiking and visiting tourists. Only the Japanese say that the dark woods and empty spaces are scary as they are not used to 'haunted' forests and 'ghost' houses. But they are great tourists and fun as people and love horse and reindeer sleigh rides and dog sleds, snow igloos, northern lights and Santa's village tours. If you'd like some Nordic movie fare, try The Bridge, The Troll, Sorjonen, Karppi or anything by the very humane, reward-winning Aki Kaurismäki. P.S. Just read that there's a place called Sampo in India, that name is Nordic.

ONe of my favorite movies. I've seen it several times. There are crazy theories about the movie as well from all the layered symbolism that are in the hotel. In the book, the author is much more sane before the hotel possesses him. In the movie, you don't know if he's going crazy or the hotel is possessing him. Interesting enough, Stephen King (author of the book) HATED this version and did another version later based on the real hotel he stayed in in Colorado, but it was a flop. This movie is actually better than the novel. In the novel, there are many more scenes: Jack gets stung by bees, the hedgerow sculptures turn into real monsters that chase people down, the furnace is much more alive as the heart of the hotel. There is also a secret diary of all the photos through the years as well.

    • @norwegianblue2017

I think Kubrick's film version is so much better than the book. I kind of love how he let Stephen King know that he was going to leave the original story behind when they pass up the stranded VW Bug on the side of the road. The one they leave behind is the same red color as the one in the book. The one the family is driving in the movie is yellow. Knowing what we know of Kubrick, I absolutely believe that was intentional. Other possible themes and easter eggs are of genocide of the American Indian, the Holocaust, mass deception (the creation of the Federal Reserve and possible fake moon landing), and even pedophilia.

Stephen King, the author, wrote this book after staying one night at the Stanley Hotel up in the mountains in Estes Park, Colorado. I was fortunate enough to participate in a "Murder Mystery Weekend" at the Stanley. This is when a group of people get together to try to solve a fictitious murder. Great fun! I'm here to tell you that the hotel is definitely haunted and I understand why King was inspired to write the book. I have stories.

When our group arrived for the weekend, we were given a tour of the hotel including the basement where there were snack/soda machines & a small workout room including a huge punching bag. I took a swing at the bag & it was so solid & heavy it didn't move. We all laughed. That night I just had to have some refreshments, so I headed downstairs only to find the bar closed & no one around. I then headed to the basement. As I stood there trying to decide what to get, I heard footsteps walking down the stairs that were obviously behind the door next to me. As the footsteps approached, I stood back anticipating the door opening. The longer I waited the more the hair on the back of my neck stood up. No one ever walked through that door, nor did I ever hear receding footsteps. I moved to another drink machine right by the workout area and the punching bag which was right behind me. As I was making my choice, I felt something moving behind me. I spun around and that huge, immovable punching bag was swaying back & forth all by itself. Although nothing that happened was in any way malicious, I would say it was more mischievous, but I may have set a land speed record getting back to my room.

    4. The reason King didn't like this adaptation of the movie is because he didn't like the changes Kubrick made. This thing was remade just for King and although the remake was more in line with the book IMVHO it wasn't as good at this one. Two of the changes Kubrick made that he didn't like were, Wendy wasn't such a patsy and Jack's decent into madness was too rapid.

Here's my thoughts on the movie and ending where Jack is seen in the photo.
The hotel was built on an ancient native burial ground. This is a common trope with horror movies, that you're not supposed to build anything on sacred ground. The place becomes cursed/haunted. The hotel was built in 1921 and the photo was of the first party the hotel had. But it's not of the people that actually attended the party. It's of the people who the hotel has collected with it's curse.
Great reaction as always. There's a follow up movie called Doctor Sleep that's worth watching. Hope you two get around to watching that movie too.

I love your reaction as its more in tune of how scary it was when the film came out in 1980. Love how you saw the woman as strong. A lot of reactions think she's so weak, but actually she is suffering from Jack's periodic verbal abuse via raging. My mom was like this Jack (not a murderer obviously), so you never knew how to behave around her. I actually had to cut her off as she was so toxic. Great reaction on the movie. Many western people aren't that scared by this movie nowadays. I love this film. There are many rabbit holes of theories on the film if you look deeper watching 2-3 times.

  • @GavinBollard

This movie is confusing because the writer and the director didn't agree with the vision. The writer was talking about supernatural things and the director was talking about madness.
Everybody jumps at Tuesday. :-) Also, well done on spotting what Redrum was.
There are three people with "the shining" talent. Dick, Jack and Danny. The hotel was full of evil and their shining was helping the evil to wake up and come into the real world. It was almost fully awake by the end, which is why the wife could see the crazy things starting to happen.
You should watch the sequel to the shining. It's called Doctor Sleep and it's completely different but is still quite scary. It has a "grown-up" older Danny and Dick in it. Different actors though.

basically jack was around in 1921 and his soul was trapped in the hotel. so everytime there was a new care taker for the hotel. it was jack reincarnated to repeat the same thing. as for the ghost girls, its actually the hotel manifested powers to move objects or show dead people. because so many people died there the hotel is corrupted with evilness

So, a note on the ghosts we see other than Lloyd, Grady, and his daughters. The old woman in the tub had been a wealthy socialite, who showed up at the hotel with a much younger lover. He got tired of her and took off, stealing her car. She killed herself in the tub, overdosing on pills or booze, I can't remember which. Her as a young woman was not in the book. The man in the tuxedo, and the man in the dog costume were the owner of the hotel at one time, and his former one-night stand. There is a scene in the book where a woman ghost Jack is dancing with tells him that the owner never has sex with men more than once, and this other poor guy is basically demeaning himself to keep the owner's attention.
Pretty much anyone who dies in the hotel becomes trapped there as a ghost, unable to move on.

Another point in the filming Jack and the director treated the wife like real crap, so her reactions are very geniune in this film. Some of the scenes were filmed up to 100 times to get the scene right. The doors Jack chopped through were too weak as Jack could chop them up too fast, so they had to switch to real solid wood doors so the action would be slower. I think they chopped up 5-6 doors for that scene.

Stanley Kubrick, despite the antics with regards to Shelley Duvall, has made some of the best horror/thriller movies in his time. Great choice for a horror movie, Loud Guys, and best wishes to you and yours from Arkansas, United States. As for the scene with "Lloyd", the last thing Jack said before he appeared with all of the liquor was, "I would sell my soul for just a glass of beer." This seems to indicate that the bartender "Lloyd" is actually the devil or a demon making a contract with Jack Torrence, a subtle reference to Faust who legend says sold his soul to the devil.

If you enjoyed this one, I'd recommend several other Stephen King adaptations, many of which deal with people who posess some measure of psychic power, such as Carrie, The Dead Zone, Firestarter, Pet Semetary (the original), and the semi-sequel to this one, Doctor Sleep, which features a grown up Danny Torrance. For less horror-oriented, but equally enthralling "psychic" Stephen King stories, I'd recommend Hearts in Atlantis and The Green Mile.
He also has some other well-made horror adaptations that DON'T necessarily involve psychic phenomenon such as Misery, or the Salem's Lot miniseries (the original is the best, but the remake was pretty good too). In fact, the miniseries adaptations of his work often represent the best versions of his books - The Stand, The Shining miniseries (which is WAY closer to the novel), Rose Red, and the "It" miniseries (as well as the more recent theatrical version of "It" Parts 1 & 2).
He wrote segments for several horror anthology films such as Creepshow 1 & 2, Cat's Eye, and Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, all of which are more creepy-fun than scary-scary.
And then there are his more "serious" literary adaptations such as Stand by Me, Dolores Claiborne, and what is arguably his most enduring adaptation, The Shawshank Redemption, which aren't really "horror" movies, but contain some pretty horrific dramatic elements.
Not all Stephen King adaptations are worth watching, but the ones I listed tend to tower above the rest. He's considered one of America's best (and most prolific) writers for good reason. Anyhoo, can't wait to see whatever you've got for us next, and thanks for another great reaction/ review!!!
