Hey! Good question. It's possible to mix and match but the space on each drive will be determined by the smallest drive. It's not recommended to get drives of different speeds because they will operate at different vibrations.
Does a NAS need to be Ethernet connected to your modem or router or can it connect to your WiFi wirelessly? I understand that wire is always faster, but is wireless practical? I want to be able to remotely upload pics/video and download for editing using adobe . Thank you.

Can someone paste the kickstarter link? I tried finding it in the massive description, or a pinned comment, but use VoiceOver and got overwhelmed. tia :)
Hi! I'm confused about Ugreen's max storage, THIS 22T*4+4T*2 thing cofuses me. I have a quick question if anyone may happen to know it; it would help a lot so I can get the NAS before the Kickstarter ends. Would I be able to use the 4 bay plus version with 4 of these HDDs (Seagate Exos X18 18TB Enterprise HDD)? My budget is short so I would be buying one at a time. No backup up necessary, I just need external, server-like storage and when one drive starts to decay I will put another and copy everything there. Thank you
Hey Andrew, it means you can add a max of 22 Terabyte times 4 plus another 4 Terabyte times two in the form of NVME SSD. I run 4x18TB ironwolf drives and they run very well (and loud 😂). I understand the cost issue and you can populate the bays one by one, but since HDD drives can also fail suddenly, it's risky not to run it in a RAID configuration.
@@PatrickRambles Thank you very much!! Patrick, this was super helpful! currently planning my NAS config and buying it before the kickstarter ends. Have a great one!
I would like to have built-in support for a site-to-site VPN between two or more NAS systems, with automatic sync between them, making them appear to the user as a single system. Does this system support that? I know how to set this up with strongswan, and rsync, etc. I have never seen a system that makes it easy to do by default.
@@PatrickRambles Then, I fear, I would not buy it. PCs running Linux would make a much more practical NAS. Or FreeNAS.. One of our offices fell into that trap recently, when the office NAS died, taking with it a great deal of crucial data. They didn't have another copy, thinking that if it was on the NAS, it was "safe." I spent many hours trying to recover the data, got some of it, but unfortunately, the NAS took a couple of crucial folders with it when it died. Bye-bye. A NAS needs backup too.
100% a NAS needs backup. And yes there are much more open options like building your own. I think this NAS is built for people who want the benefits of a NAS but don’t want to dive deep into it. It’s almost plug and play.
@@PatrickRambles Agreed, and there is a place for it. But what bothers me about this is these inexpensive standalone NAS systems create a trap that unwary, or unknowledgeable users can fall into all too easily, thinking that if they have a NAS, they are safe, or that a NAS is a replacement for cloud storage. The very title of this video propagates that idea, and that is simply false. A single NAS is NOT a replacement for cloud storage. You need multiple NAS, cloud storage or some other means to backup the NAS. That's my objection, my point, that the video propagates a false sense of security, implying that a single local NAS is a viable alternative to an off-site storage system of some type. It isn't, and by definition, cannot be. I have a NAS, and I use it. But I also have cloud storage, and, frankly, quite a lot of it. The cloud storage backs up my NAS, and my NAS backs up the cloud storage. Yes, your cloud storage needs a backup too! Just because you have iCloud, or G-Drive, or OneDrive does not mean you are safe. While rare, cloud storage does fail too. Simple human error can cause loss of data stored "safely" in the cloud. If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies.
@NathanGregoryAuthor I don’t really see how my title propagates this. I compare NAS storage to internal Mac storage, not cloud storage. It goes without saying that important files need more than one backup.
HDD's use a lot of energy and are slow a/f. ancient technology. also network delay is prolly to high to run program off of it. so idk what to do with it really.

i think WD started it 1st.. they had wirelss HDD.. you can access via wifi..
What are transfer speeds over WiFi? Didn’t hear you mention them.
Depends on your connection.
Can I store VM and run the VM from this NAS?
Ugreen need to mature their software for sure , we don’t need an another player in the market that use a OS that is mature as Qnap security. You know what I mean.
Yep, the software needs work, they know it and are working hard on that. It's part of why it's a kickstarter project. The hardware is fantastic so as far as I'm concerned it can only get better. Let's see 😊
I own a Synology dual bay for many many years. It has a more mature software. Keep in mind that every few years you have to replace one or more disks.
@@PatrickRambles 100% agree with you . Their hardware is a killer feature.
I'm assuming that this is more Apple/Mac friendly? How compatible is it with PC and Samsung Galaxy devices?
Not at all , PC and android as well :)
I appreciate the info!
Do you need to be connected to the same network>
Nope. An internet connection is all you need. However, if you are on the same network, transfer speeds will be higher.
Can you connect your iPhone without internet?
Can this be accessed directly (via Thunderbolt cable) and NAS at the same time?
This NAS doesn't have a thunderbolt port. the USB C ports is 2.0.
@@PatrickRambles Thanks for the quick response. I guess what I meant is can it be plugged directly to MBP for instance to access the files directly (Not via network as a typical NAS)
Hey Patrick, can you edit video on FCP from the NAS?
Hey man, not really. Maybe from the SSD only one they have but HDDs over network are not fast enough for editing off the drive.
@@PatrickRambles thanks for responding...what about those NVMe drives for the cache...could that work?
@@michaelocunningham they have a model that has 4 m.2 slots. You can edit with that set up.
Do all HDD have to be the same size? Or is that flexible? ie, drive 1 can be 20 TB, drive 2 can be 10 TB, etc?
Hey! Good question. It's possible to mix and match but the space on each drive will be determined by the smallest drive. It's not recommended to get drives of different speeds because they will operate at different vibrations.
@@PatrickRambles that's the beauty of synology nas. They have a raid type called 'SHR' which allows a mix of HDD with different sizes.
@PaulEddie that's quite interesting! I'm not 100% sure whether this or one of the other NAS UGREEN's lineup offers that option. I'll check.
what about apple time machine support? doe this support it?
Very good review!
Thanks!
Can we use this as DAS? Without network attached?
Not this model. I believe the thunderbolt models are supposed to get this functionality.
@@PatrickRambles qnap 472 xt?
Is there a question in there?
Just found this and of course they're all gone..lol Be looking for them to hit the market later.
Does a NAS need to be Ethernet connected to your modem or router or can it connect to your WiFi wirelessly? I understand that wire is always faster, but is wireless practical? I want to be able to remotely upload pics/video and download for editing using adobe . Thank you.
It needs to be connected via ethernet. I don't think it has its own wifi module.
there is a synology that can connect to wifi, but i also think one of nas from this lineup can too
Can it Backup to Dropbox ?
What's the speed, don't you do speed tests?
Can you use this as DAS using the usb c / thunderbolt port
not this model, but the models up from this have TB
How do i buy this?
How can you have it in another room? Doesn't it need to be wired to the modem/router? Sorry, not too tech savvy myself. I would like to keep it away in another room, but didn't think it was an option
Do you keep your modem next to your computer ?
@@PatrickRambles I do not, I keep it by my TV and gaming consoles
@@darkjorgelinkthe nas can be set up next to the router. So you don't have to deal with the loud noise in your office.
Can someone paste the kickstarter link? I tried finding it in the massive description, or a pinned comment, but use VoiceOver and got overwhelmed. tia :)
It's right at the top :) - bit.ly/3IWcfcP
Let’s upgrade that espresso setup next! 😉
It's not an espresso setup, just a bean grinding coffee maker.
@@PatrickRambleslooks like a Philips super automatic espresso machine :)
Philips 5400 LatteGo :)
@LifestyleLab_ cool channel btw, just checked it out :)
Have a great one!
is this available in australia?
By the way the smalest version is near same price like an 256Gb upgrade..so why not to buy..its far better usable..
I'm not sure what you're saying.
I would like to have built-in support for a site-to-site VPN between two or more NAS systems, with automatic sync between them, making them appear to the user as a single system. Does this system support that? I know how to set this up with strongswan, and rsync, etc. I have never seen a system that makes it easy to do by default.
At this time it doesn’t allow third party software or apps. I don’t know about the future.
It goes without saying that important files need more than one backup.
whats wrong with iCloud?, I got 6TB and it gives me Storage and Peace of Mind..
It's slow and on someone else's server.
Can I used as a server for my hosting website?
I feel like should be done but might be bad if you have a lot of requests because it depends on cpu n ram also maybe slower since it’s using hdf
@@KEVINSURIEL thank u Kevin
HDD's use a lot of energy and are slow a/f. ancient technology. also network delay is prolly to high to run program off of it. so idk what to do with it really.
Yeah - of course you can stick SSDs in there for higher speeds but for me this is mainly video storage, I'm not about to edit off of a NAS.
